The iPhone 14 represents the 16th generation of Apple’s flagship smartphone family. First announced in September of 2022, this particular iPhone is the latest and greatest since 2021’s 15th generation smartphone, the iPhone 13. The History of the iPhone 14

The announcement and release of the iPhone 14 effectively countered both of these common claims. Announced on September 7th of 2022 during Apple’s “Far Out” event in Cupertino, California, these four new iPhone 14 types made quite a number of significant changes and upgrades over the 13.

For one, the iPhone 14 family did away with the “Mini” model found in previous iPhone generations. In its place, it re-introduced the “Plus” model — an iPhone type that hadn’t been seen since 2017’s iPhone 8 Plus from five years prior. Additionally, it continued the “Pro” and “Pro Max” models that began in 2019 with the iPhone 11 family. On the whole, these four 16th-generation phones — the 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max — represent a refreshing change of direction for new iPhone expectations from Apple.

While the iPhone 14 base model looks and feels identical to is predecessor, the iPhone 13, its hardware and software specs — along with the internal specs of the 14 Plus, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max — are quite different indeed. All in all, the 14 family brought upgrades to the internal design, the camera quality and features, the accelerometer, its satellite and network connectivity, its battery life, and — for its Pro and Pro Max types — its system-on-chip. Of all the iPhone 14 types on the market today, an argument could certainly be made that the iPhone 14 base model is the least impressive of the bunch. It looks almost identical to the iPhone 13 base model, with the only real noticeable difference being the lack of a SIM tray compared to the previous generation. (That, plus the fact that the Pink color option has been replaced with Purple, and a new Yellow color option has been added as of March 2023.) Everything great about the iPhone 14 is also present in the iPhone 14 Plus. However, this “Plus” variant is still the superior model. Why is this? It all has to do with physical size. The iPhone 14 Plus is larger than the iPhone 14 base model (and that includes screen size, too). While the true difference only measures out to be a little more than half an inch, it definitely matters to those who value a bigger screen. Same goes for those who value a bigger phone on the whole: The iPhone 14 Plus adds about half an inch in length and about a quarter of an inch in width while keeping the depth the same.

Beyond these measurements, we can see a number of other little advantages to the iPhone 14 Plus over the iPhone 14 base model. These include a longer battery life, a higher screen resolution, and greater power overall. Of course, these specs also come with a couple of disadvantages: This iPhone 14 type is heavier in weight and creates more greenhouse gas emissions compared to the 14 base model. In the end, however, even these minor cons cannot be outshined by the sheer number of pros for the iPhone 14 Plus.

To be brutally honest, the iPhone 14 Pro is the stronger and more appealing version of the iPhone 14 base model. Their size, display, and weight come out to be nearly identical, but the iPhone 14 Pro adds another camera, improves the overall quality across all four cameras, adds a few hours to the battery life, and throws in a number of other fun features such as the Always On display and the Dynamic Island located at the top of the screen. Of all the iPhone 14 types, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is by far the greatest and most noteworthy of the bunch. When Will New iPhone Types Be Announced? What to Expect

It always seems that Apple fans and iPhone loyalists start clamoring for new iPhone rumors almost as soon as the latest generation is announced. Based on past release strategies, it’s probably pretty likely we’ll se an iPhone 15 announcement sometime in early to mid September. An official release should come shortly after — if not by the following week, then definitely by the week after. This has been the pattern for Apple since at least the iPhone 5, with only a handful of iPhones ever deviating from this September announcement and release strategy.

As far as what we can expect from the iPhone 15, the answer is a lot less dependable than this probable release date. Some of the most prominent rumors include an “iPhone 15 Ultra” to replace the Pro Max line (complete with a new camera, of course), a generation-wide switch to USB-C charging, the addition of the Dynamic Island to all four iPhone 15 types, and a total removal of the physical volume and power buttons. Just how many of these rumors actually come true will remain to be seen until September of 2023.
