iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 14 Pro Max: What’s the Difference?
Apple introduced its smartphone collection to the world during a far-out event in the fall. While four new models were shown off, the iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max are geared toward power users.
It was also a year that didn’t see any major upgrades from the previous generation with the iPhone 13, and that trend continued with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
Display
Apple’s Super Retina displays are vibrant and have become a selling point for their smartphones in recent years. It’s also the biggest difference between the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max has a 6.7-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2,796 x 1,290 pixels. The panel has a pixel density of 460 PPI, just like the iPhone 14 Pro. There’s a slight difference in resolution at 2,556 x 1,179p on the iPhone 14 Pro, although the screen size is significantly smaller.
On the iPhone 14 Pro, you’ll find a smaller 6.1-inch display. It’s almost the same size as the base model, but with a higher resolution. Both smartphone displays are Dolby Vision and HDR compatible and listed at 120Hz.
Battery Life
Smartphone manufacturers have managed to pack a lot of tech into slim smartphones. It often comes at the expense of battery life, however. You’ll get excellent battery life from the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, but one has a surprising edge with power.
The battery life on the iPhone 14 Pro is listed at around 23 hours during video playback. For mixed usage, most users get around 14 to 16 hours of power from the 3,200mAh battery. Apple used a larger 4,323mAh battery in the iPhone Pro Max, so you can expect at least 5 to 6 more hours of juice.
Fast charging is available on both smartphones, which also feature Qi wireless charging. You can power them back to a 50% charge in around 30 minutes with a 20w adapter, but the larger battery in the Pro Max will take slightly longer to bring to a full charge.
Size and Weight
You may think the iPhone 14 Pro Max is a behemoth considering the size of the display. Well, it’s just as svelte as its smaller sibling in an iPhone 14 case like this one, even if it’s noticeably heavier.
Despite the 6.7-inch display on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, it’s only 7.9mm thick and measures 160.7mm tall and 76.5mm wide. That’s impressive and it’s actually smaller than Samsung’s large flagship, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, at 163.3 x 77.9 x 8.9mm.
By comparison, the iPhone 14 Pro is 147.5 x 71.5mm with a weight of 206 grams. It’s more than 5 inches shorter than the Pro Max, but just as thin at 7.9mm and almost as wide. It’s far more pocket-friendly than the larger smartphone, and 34 grams lighter.
iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 14 Pro Max: What’s the Same?
The size of the display, battery life, and dimensions help separate the iPhone 14 Pro from the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Those differences are important, but on paper and under the hood, these smartphones are very similar.

Design
Whether you’re buying the base model iPhone 14 or the supersized iPhone 14 Pro Max, every smartphone in their lineup has a similar design. That’s common with Apple and other manufacturers, and it’s safe to say that both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are great-looking smartphones, like the entry-level model and the iPhone 14 Plus.
Aside from the size, you won’t notice any difference in the design between the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. They have a ceramic glass front shield with a matte glass back and stainless steel frame. It’s not as wild as you’ll find with a smartphone like the Nothing Phone 1 and its transparent back panel, but the phones are classy with a streamlined design.
There is a difference in color options between the regular lineup and last year’s models of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. You can pick up the 14 Pro and Pro Max in Deep Purple, Space Black, Silver, or Gold. That’s slightly different from last year’s lineup of Alpine Green, Graphite, Sierra Blue, Gold, and Silver.
Hardware
When you buy an Android smartphone, you’re likely to find a Snapdragon processor under the hood. With Apple, it’s their unique Bionic chip, and you’ll find Apple’s A16 SoC in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Apple’s new chip is hexa-core with two Everest cores at 3.46GHz and four Sawtooth cores clocked at 2.02GHz. It’s powerful like the new Gen 2 Snapdragon 8, but also incredibly efficient. The processor has an integrated 5-core GPU, and both smartphones are backed by 6GB of RAM across all configurations.
Storage capacity for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max is 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. There’s no microSD card slot, but you can always turn to a cloud storage solution like Apple’s iCloud when space gets tight.
Cameras
Apple, Samsung, and Google go head-to-head in the camera department each year. The iPhone 14 has the company’s best set of sensors yet, and it’s a feature that puts these devices on the top of many wish lists. While the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have respectable cameras, the Max and Pro Max take things to a different level.
You can take amazing photos with these smartphones thanks to a 48MP main sensor on the back combined with a 12MP 2x telephoto lens and a 12MP ultra-wide sensor. That includes dual-pixel PDAF and sensor-shift OIS on the main camera along with 3x optical zoom on the telephoto lens. They have a dual-LED dual-tone flash and can handle 4K video at up to 60 frames per second.
The selfie camera is no slouch either. You can take photos of yourself using HDR or record video in 4K with the 12MP sensor. It has cinematic mode just like the rear camera array, along with an SL 3D depth sensor.
Features
Some of the camera modes and even the display could be considered a feature on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Not many smartphones can hang with their prowess in the camera department, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to flagship features from the company.
One of the cooler new features on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max is Apple’s Dynamic Island. It’s a hybrid notification system that makes use of the space at the top of the screen where the camera cutout is. ProMotion display technology provides a fluid experience on the 120Hz screens, and “Always On” helps conserve battery life while keeping you in the loop.
Emergency SOS and Crash Detection are fantastic safety features on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. So is LiDAR, a unique depth-sensing scanner. You can use LiDAR to scan objects in 3D, but it also improves photos and videos while opening the doors to augmented reality features.
iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 14 Pro Max: Which One is Better?
If you prefer Apple’s ecosystem to Android, you can’t go wrong with the iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max. The phones aren’t a huge upgrade from last year’s models, but they are powerful, packed full of features, and an upgrade over the base model iPhone 14.
Pricing is also comparable between the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. There’s only about a $100 difference between models across the board regardless of configuration. That means it simply comes down to the size of the display and battery life for many consumers.
