Is the Intel Core i9-11900KF Desktop Processor Worth It?
We compared the Intel Core i9-11900KF Desktop Processor (list price $613.75) with two similar high-end CPUs: the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X ($799) and the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X ($999).
The Intel Core i9 has eight cores and 16 threads. The two AMD Ryzen CPUs have double the amount of both: 16 cores and 32 threads.
The Intel Core i9 has a higher base clock speed than the other two contenders: 3.50GHz vs. 3.40GHz. Though it’s not a huge difference, a higher base clock speed means that the CPU can process more instructions per second, which can lead to improved performance in demanding applications.
The Intel CPU also features a higher boost clock speed, 5.30GHz so it can temporarily run at a higher speed when necessary. This can lead to improved performance in video games and other demanding apps. The AMD Ryzen 9’s boost clock speed is 4.90GHz and the AMD Ryzen Threadripper’s is 4.00GHz.
TDP (thermal design power) is the amount of heat that a CPU can produce under full load. It’s measured in watts (W). This can allow CPUs to run at higher clock speeds, but it also means that the CPU requires a more powerful cooling solution to prevent it from overheating. A higher TDP can also lead to higher power consumption. So, as you can see, whether a higher TDP is a good thing depends on whether you intend to overclock your CPU.
