NVIDIA and Intel are two of the largest titans operating in the PC industry, both highly respected and successful due to the products they offer. People familiar with these brands know that Intel is famous for producing some of the most powerful CPUs on the market, while NVIDIA is equally famous for producing some of the most powerful GPUs on the market. Intel, however, has recently found itself entering the NVIDIA territory and producing its own GPUs, with the most recent being the Intel ARC A770. Intel ARC A770 vs. RTX 3070: What’s the Difference?

Now that we have all the numerical information about the two GPU units, let’s discuss what that actually means for users. You’ll likely notice that the Intel ARC A770 has a lot of bigger numbers on its side of the table, but it’s important to not assume that means the card is inherently better. When it comes to products in technology, numbers can be deceptive and there are a lot of factors at play other than just the raw stats.

The Raw Stats

In the table above, we mentioned a lot of stats, some of which you have likely never even heard of before. That’s okay, we’ll explain! Essentially all of these stats, in addition to other things such as drivers and cooling systems, determine just how powerful a graphics card is and how its performance will be in hard-to-run software.

Arguably the most important of the above stats are core clock, boost clock, memory, and memory bandwidth. Core clock speed on a graphics card dictates how fast the cores of the card are, and these cores are responsible for rendering graphics — the entire point of the GPU. Boost speed, on the other hand, is essentially how fast the user can push the card to go via overclocking technology. Keep in mind that while it is fun to use overclocking technology in moderation, PCs need a break too, and shouldn’t always be running overclocked!

In the chart above, memory refers to VRAM (video RAM). The GPU of a computer uses VRAM to track and manage the software it is currently running. Generally speaking, higher is better in this case, and some games like Minecraft Java Edition will demand a decently heavy supply of it. It goes to follow that VRAM bandwidth is how fast your VRAM can move data back and forth.

Graphics Quality and Performance

Despite the fact that it performs less powerfully, it is important to keep in mind that the ARC A770 is considerably cheaper, and is still going to perform well in most tasks, even if not equivalent to the RTX 3070.

Driver Support

When it comes to GPU units, they are not plug-and-play. As previously mentioned, there is a lot to consider when choosing a GPU for your PC, and compatibility is going to be the most important factor. Whether you are upgrading an older PC or building an entirely new one, you need to determine which card works with which motherboard, what power supply strength is required to run the card sufficiently, and what the requirements are for the card when it comes to cooling systems.

The Intel ARC A770 is compatible with any motherboard that has a PCIe x16 slot and requires a power supply capable of providing the card with 225W (along with the necessary power for the rest of the PC, so plan accordingly). Intel recommends a minimum of a 550W power supply for machines running the Intel ARC A770.
