Intel ARC A770 vs. RTX 3060: which is the better choice? For years, PC gamers have been stuck with a binary choice when it comes to GPUs. You can either opt for AMD or NVIDIA. However, tech giant Intel is finally throwing its hat into the arena with the ARC A770. Although this GPU is quite good at gaming, there are some catches as we’ll discuss.

The RTX 3060 doesn’t need much of an introduction. It is still one of the best buys on the market today for 1080p gaming. If you want to fiddle with settings a bit, you can even coax out stellar performance for the likes of 4K and 1440p. Today’s comparison is pitting these two GPUs head-to-head to see which one is worth your hard-earned cash. The results are honestly quite surprising.

When it comes down to raw specs, it would be easy to give the overall edge to the ARC A770. However, we aren’t just looking at raw numbers. How the GPU performs in actual real-world settings is going to be vastly more important than the figures given by the manufacturer. There is a world of difference between these GPUs as you’ll discover.

Intel ARC A770 vs. RTX 3060: What’s the Difference?

GPUs from differing companies are built in very different manners. As such, it can make direct comparisons a bit more difficult when determining overall capabilities. Thankfully, there is some degree of parity when it comes to feature settings like upscaling. The ARC A770 acquits itself quite well. I don’t think the first generation of Intel GPUs is ready for prime time just yet, which I’ll explain my reasoning.

When you’re looking at raw DirectX 12 performance, the Intel ARC A770 handles itself quite well. It posts fairly respectable framerates when sticking to newer titles running at 1080p resolution. At Ultra settings, it can more than handle a highly demanding title like Cyberpunk 2077. It is a brilliant first showing from a manufacturer known primarily for integrated GPUs that are woefully underpowered.

However, the NVIDIA RTX 3060 is built for gaming through and through. While Ultra settings on the ARC A770 average around 50 frames per second, the RTX 3060 pushes past to around 62 frames per second on average.

These numbers stay fairly consistent when moving up to 1440p. Both GPUs aren’t intended to max out higher resolutions than 1080p. However, the RTX 3060 handles itself far better in most situations. Titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Rise of the Tomb Raider are more than playable at stable framerates on the RTX 3060.

Game Compatibility

This is honestly the largest disparity we’ll come across between these two GPUs. Most games are going to run on Vulkan or DirectX 12 these days. There is still a smattering of legacy titles that enjoy popularity with DirectX 11. The RTX 3060 handles all of these titles with ease. You certainly won’t find any complaints when loafing around in a game like Rainbow 6 Siege.

Sadly, the ARC A770 performs poorly with the older graphical APIs like DirectX 11. This could be in part due to the overall focus of the hardware and the lack of matching optimizations for a GPU that was introduced in 2022. However, when it gets down to it, you’re going to have far worse performance with older games than you will with newer titles.

As such, if you’re playing a game like League of Legends, then RTX 3060 is a much better fit for your needs. Granted, the performance decrease for the ARC A770 is a 30% decrease in frame rates in a game that is going into the 100s during gameplay.

Power Draw

Both of these GPUs are very mid-range in design, and as such require similar power requirements. That said, the ARC A770 seems to draw more power from the wall. You’re looking at around 225 watts of energy required to run the Intel ARC A770.

The RTX 3060 is considerably more efficient. You’re looking at around 180 watts of power from the wall to effectively use the GPU. This effectively means you can use a less powerful PSU while still maintaining solid performance.

Power draw isn’t going to be a major selling point for many users. However, components don’t exist entirely in a vacuum. The RTX 3060 is going to be cheaper overall since you can go with a less powerful PSU to complement your build.

Upscaling Support

DLSS is one of the biggest selling points when considering an NVIDIA GPU.

NVIDIA’s DLSS has made quite a splash when it comes to game performance. With the proprietary tech, you can readily coax out vastly more performance when playing your favorite games. Intel has its take on the technology, however. Intel’s XeSS is similar in concept to DLSS but is a little worse when it comes to overall visual fidelity.

Now, you’re only going to have the option for DLSS if you purchase an NVIDIA RTX GPU. XeSS is a solid performer, and it works well on titles like Warzone and Cyberpunk 2077. As such, I would readily recommend either if visual fidelity isn’t a major concern. However, I’ve been an NVIDIA user for decades at this point.

As such, I would have to recommend steering toward DLSS. Overall, it looks more refined and essentially allows you to up the settings on your favorite games with minimal issues. There is certainly nothing wrong with how XeSS functions, but it doesn’t look as clean. DLSS, depending on the mode selected, can maintain great visual coherence without compromising your framerate.

The Intel ARC A770 is a wonderful first attempt from the manufacturer. However, it needs a little more time and refinement before I would readily recommend it for users looking to make the most of their gaming experience. The A770 is overall a more expensive GPU as well. While it is a strong showing from Intel, the RTX 3060 just has an edge in every conceivable category of comparison.
