Hyundai is a popular automaker known for its affordable vehicles. Similar to Toyota, the Korean brand mostly focused on creating hybrid cars. However, Hyundai has a closer relationship with electric vehicles than one might think.

The automaker launched its first fully electric vehicle back in 1991. The Sonata Electric didn’t enjoy much success at the time, but this didn’t discourage the manufacturer. In 2009, the brand launched the first EV produced for the commercial market, the Blue On. However, this vehicle was limited to the Korean market due to its limited range and performance.

Once again, Hyundai learned from its mistakes and launched the first IONIQ vehicle in 2016. This EV SUV conquered the international markets, and it is now in its seventh edition.

The IONIQ 7 concept was originally unveiled at the 2021 Automobility Show in Los Angeles. Its expected release date is now closer than ever, as the new SUV is expected to hit the roads sometime in 2024.

Like Hyundai, General Motors’ history with electric vehicles goes way back. The company launched its first fully electric car, the EV1, in 1996. This vehicle was the first mass-produced and purpose-designed EV from a major automaker, but like the Sonata Electric, it didn’t have a lasting impact.

In recent years, though, General Motors focused on launching fully electric versions of beloved gas models. This is the case with the Cadillac Lyriq and the Cadillac Celestiq. The former was unveiled in 2023, and the latter is planned to be launched in 2024. In 2025, GM plans to launch the first electric version of the Cadillac Escalade, aptly named the Escalade IQ EV.

The Hyundai IONIQ 7 and the Escalade IQ EV have one thing in common, their class. Both are marketed as luxury mid-class SUVs. Despite the upcoming 2024 unveil, Hyundai hasn’t said much about the vehicle’s specs, so it’s too early to compare the differences in size and ground clearance between these two SUVs.

What we do know is that the Escalade IQ EV will be offered in RWD and AWD trims. Rumors claim the IONIQ 7 will have similar drivetrains, so we expect similar performance. Considering the concept alone, it is also likely that the IONIQ 7 will be larger than the Escalade.

While the IONIQ 7 and the Escalade IQ EV belong to the same class, there are crucial differences between them in terms of performance.

Once again, we don’t know much about Hyundai’s brainchild apart from the rumors. According to speculations, this vehicle will output around 300 horsepower in its single-motor variant and up to 600 horsepower in the dual-motor AWD version. That’s a lot of power, but it all pales in comparison to the Cadillac.

The Escalade IQ EV stands out with a whopping 750 horsepower in its dual-motor version. The RWD is expected to have less power, but it’ll still be more powerful than the IONIQ 7. With 785 lb.-ft. of torque, you can expect the Escalade to tackle all terrains and situations like a champ. Hyundai hasn’t said much about the IONIQ 7’s torque, but we expect it to be lower compared to the Escalade.

Since the Escalade IQ EV hasn’t hit the roads yet, we don’t know its actual acceleration. However, Cadillac’s reps claim it will go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than five seconds. It will unlikely be as fast as its gas-powered counterpart, but quite close to it. At the moment, we know nothing about IONIQ 7’s acceleration or top speed.

Range and Battery

The Escalade IQ EV might be more powerful than the IONIQ 7, but the two cars will likely share the same battery pack. We know for sure that the Cadillac comes with a 24-module Ultium battery pack that outputs 200kWh of usable energy. Rumors claim the IONIQ 7 will use the same battery pack and the same capacity.

Nevertheless, their estimated ranges are different. Factors with a direct impact on the range include the vehicle’s weight, rim size, and type of tires. This explains why the Escalade IQ EV has an estimated range of around 400 miles per charge, whereas the IONIQ 7 won’t go farther than 300 miles per charge.

As far as charging is concerned, the IONIQ 7 needs around 20 minutes to go from 10 to 80 percent of battery capacity. The Escalade IQ EV should be the same, but the automaker only says that it takes around 10 minutes to add an extra 100 miles to the range.


The Hyundai IONIQ 7 and the Escalade IQ EV are two luxury SUVs, and neither disappoints with its design. Both cars impress with a 7-seat capacity and plenty of cargo and passenger space.

Design-wise, the IONIQ 7 is imagined as a living room on wheels. Instead of the classic three rows of seats, the concept includes two rotating front seats and a rear L-shaped sofa that occupies the entire backside. The front seats are actually generous armchairs that take the concept of riding comfort to a whole new level.

Wide side windows, an ample windshield, and a panoramic sunroof allow plenty of natural light to flood the cabin. Cubbies and door pockets add valuable storage, while the front and rear doors open in opposite directions, allowing you to merge the interior with your surroundings when the car is parked. Other add-ons include a built-in refrigerator.

While the IONIQ 7 concept is amazing, some of the presented features may never make it to the production line. Yet, we know what to expect from the Escalade IQ. The Cadillac promises — and delivers — an upscale driving experience.

The spacious interior includes three rows of seats. The front row boasts comfortable chairs divided by a minimalist console. A nice touch is the use of individual chairs for the second row of seating. There is plenty of leg and headroom, as well as a central console between the seats with cup holders and a large touchscreen.

The third row includes a 3-seat bench that folds flat when not in use, increasing the cargo space. Behind the third row, you get around 23 cubic feet of cargo space. The vehicle also includes a frunk that adds around 12 cubic feet of capacity.

With such an impressive interior, the Escalade IQ EV can only have equally impressive technology. The entire dashboard is one huge, curved touchscreen display. This 55-inch panel is divided into two zones for the driver and passenger.

The driver’s side is a configurable digital gauge that displays all essential driving data. The passenger’s side is polarized to avoid distracting the driver when the vehicle is out of the park. It isn’t yet certain what apps you’ll be able to access on this display, but considering the user-friendly Google interface, we expect anything from gaming to streaming music and videos.

Under the central display, a secondary display allows you to control the climate zones, doors, and ambient lighting, among others. At the rear, a third display measures 12.5 inches diagonally and allows the rear passenger to control their own climate zones, massage functions, and headrest monitors. An outstanding 40-speaker AKG audio system is the cherry on top of this sumptuous cake.

Hyundai hasn’t revealed much about the IONIQ 7’s technology, except for the fact that the panoramic sunroof doubles as an OLED screen. This screen can display user-requested content or set the ambient lighting to something relaxing.


One of the biggest differences between the Hyundai IONIQ 7 and the Escalade IQ EV is the price. While both vehicles are classed as luxury SUVs, the rumored $50,000 IONIQ 7’s MRSP makes us think that most of the details in the concept will be lost during the production stage.

This vehicle is substantially more affordable than the Escalade IQ EV, whose starting price is $130,000. Depending on trim and customizations, you could pay over $175,000 to get your hands on one. It goes without saying that at this price, the upcoming Escalade won’t qualify for tax credits. If the IONIQ 7’s price remains as estimated, this vehicle might qualify for tax incentives.
