How to Venmo Someone: Step-by-Step Guide (with Photos)

If you have a busy day-to-day schedule, you likely prefer a no-frills, efficient experience in every area of life. Luckily, many apps today cater to an on-the-go lifestyle — fintech apps like Venmo included.

Venmo is a money-sending app, but it’s also a time-saving app. You can easily Venmo someone or send money to them in just a few quick steps, which leaves you more time to scarf down a bagel while you’re headed out the door.

You can choose to send money to people, businesses, and charities. Any money you send to a charity is sent via donation. Let’s get started!

How to Send Money to Someone Using Venmo

Venmo makes sending money to friends and family super easy.

To send money using Venmo, follow these easy steps.

  1. Open the app.
  2. Go to Pay/Request
  3. Find the person you want to send money to.
  4. Enter the amount you wish to send and add your note.
  5. Select Pay.
  6. Select whether you want to send the payment as public (so anyone can see) or private (so it’s just between you and your recipient). Then, confirm.

Congrats, your money is on its way!

How to Request Money

The steps to request money are quick and easy, just like the steps to send money. The only difference is that, after you enter the amount you wish to send, you select Request instead of Pay.

How to Send Money to Multiple People

You can send money to more than one person using the Venmo app. However, only do this if you want to send the same amount to everyone. To send different amounts to multiple people, you’ll have to send more than one payment.

To pay multiple people using Venmo:

  1. Open the app.
  2. Go to Pay/Request
  3. Find the person you want to send money to and tap the plus icon
  4. Search for the other people you want to send money to and add them as needed.
  5. Select Next
  6. Enter the amount you wish to send and your payment note.
  7. Select Pay.

If you want to request money from multiple people (of the same dollar amount), tap Request instead of Pay.

You Don’t Need to Add Money to Send Money

Before adding money to your Venmo wallet, you should know you don’t have to.

If you want to make payments using the app, you can add a payment method such as a bank account or credit or debit card. You can check the payment details if you need clarification on which payment method Venmo will use for a purchase. That way, you always know which source is funding what you’re buying.

If you don’t see your Venmo balance as a payment option, you may need to verify your identity first.

How to Make Venmo Payments Private

Venmo is a peer-to-peer money-sending app. In this regard, peer-to-peer means anyone can see who you’ve sent money to, by default. While they can’t see how much you sent, they can see when you sent it. So, if you prefer to make your Venmo payments private, you can do this in just a few easy steps.

It’s important to note that, between the sender and receiver, whoever has the more restrictive privacy setting will be honored. That means if your settings are private, but who you’re sending to still has the default public setting, your privacy settings are more restrictive, and your transaction will be private.

To make your Venmo previous payments private:

  1. Open the app.
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Go to Privacy
  4. While looking at Past Payments, choose Change to Friends to Change to Private.

Changing your payments to be viewable by friends only will make your costs visible to your added connections. Changing them to private means no one can see who you paid or when.

To update your privacy and make your upcoming Venmo payments private:

  1. Open the app.
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Go to Privacy
  4. Under Default Privacy Settings, select how private you’d like to be.

Venmo Transfers are Fast

Luckily, the time it takes for a Venmo money transfer is reasonably fast. Bank transfers take the typical 3-5 business days. But, of course, weekends and holidays may affect this time. However, a transfer may post to your bank on a different day from when you sent the money.

Venmo is a great way to send money to friends, family, businesses, and non-profits. The popular app makes sending and requesting money easy, making it one less thing you have to worry about.
