Not many things are more annoying these days than a program or app that just doesn’t work properly. Glitches, bugs, relentless buffering… if you want an easy way to lose your patience, take your pick of these. While we love to use Discord to chat away and keep updated on game news, sometimes the app itself needs updating. Either it won’t launch, messages won’t send, or channels and servers are as buggy as Windows Vista. If you’re trying to resolve your Discord issues or simply want to make sure you’re running the latest version possible, read on to find out how to update Discord on any platform. Whether you’re using Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, or even Linux, you’ll find the answers here.

How to Update Discord on a Desktop

Firstly, we’re going to explain how to keep Discord updated on the desktop. The processes are very similar (and very simple), whether you’re using macOS, Windows, or Linux. Let’s dive in.

Step 1: Quit and Reopen Discord

Most of the time, Discord will update automatically whenever you launch or refresh it. All you need to do is quit Discord from the dock and reopen. Alternatively, you can hit ctrl+R (for Windows and Linux) or cmd+R (for Mac) to refresh the app while it’s open.

If there are any updates to download, these should commence, as per the first image. Otherwise, the app will simply reopen without downloading anything, as shown in the second image.

On Linux, you’ll need to enter the following command into the Terminal:

sudo snap refresh discord

Note that if the update isn’t downloading properly, you may have issues with your internet connection.

If, for some reason, this doesn’t work on Windows, you can right-click Discord in the dock and click “Check for Updates”. Most of the time, this will resolve the problem. However, if Discord still isn’t updating, you may need to uninstall and then reinstall it. Follow the steps below to do this.

If no updates are waiting, the app will simply reload.

How to Reinstall Discord to the Latest Version

For illustrative purposes, we’ll show the process on Mac, but we’ll explain how to do this on Windows and Linux as well. Stay tuned.

Step 1: Go to Applications

To start, open the Finder and go to “Applications” in the menu on the left.

You must empty the bin to delete Discord completely.

Step 3: Remove Associated Files

You don’t strictly have to delete all of Discord’s files to reinstall it, but you may want to do this to have a clean slate. To find the files, open Finder and then the “Go” menu along the top taskbar. Click “Go to Folder…” here.

The Library can be found using the Finder window.

Step 4: Delete Files From Library

If the Library isn’t already suggested, you can search for “~/Library/” and hit the return key to open it. Find the Discord folder and delete it as before to remove the files.

You can delete Discord’s files on macOS from the Library.

The situation for Windows differs slightly. To remove Discord, open “Apps & features” from the Start menu, and then delete the app. For the files, open File Explorer and check the “Hidden Items” box in the “View” taskbar at the top of the screen. Find the “AppData” folder, and delete the Discord files within.

If you’re using Linux, you can simply uninstall Discord by entering the following command in the Terminal:

sudo apt remove discord

Step 5: Reinstall Discord

To finish, simply download Discord again from https://discord.com/. It will download the latest files automatically.

For Linux, however, you can follow the same link, but make sure to download the “deb” file. This is selectable from the drop-down list.

Discord can be reinstalled by downloading it from the official website.

How to Update Discord on a Mobile Device

Luckily, the method for updating Discord on a mobile device isn’t very complicated. Check out the steps below to do this.

Step 1: Update Discord From the App or Play Store

Whether you’re using iOS or Android, the process is similar. Open the App Store or Play Store (iOS or Android, respectively) and search for Discord. If there’s an update to download, you should see an “Update” button. Otherwise, you’ll see an “Open” button (as the image shows).

As with the desktop method, this should work in the vast majority of cases. However, if it doesn’t, you can simply hit the “Uninstall” button instead and install the app again. Once the app has been downloaded and installed, it should be the latest version.

How to Update Discord: Wrapping Up

Overall, in most cases, the process of updating Discord couldn’t be simpler. However, the full process you may require is as follows:

  • On a desktop, quit Discord and reopen it. It should download any updates automatically. Alternatively, refresh Discord using ctrl+R (for Windows and Linux), or cmd+R (for Mac).
  • If this doesn’t work, you can uninstall Discord by deleting it from the “Apps & features” folder (for Windows) or the “Applications” folder (for Mac). If you’re using Linux, you can uninstall it by entering “sudo apt remove discord” into the Terminal.
  • You can remove Discord’s files at this stage from the “AppData” folder in File Explorer (be sure to check “Hidden Items” first) or from the Library on Windows and Mac, respectively. This step isn’t necessary, however.
  • After this, simply reinstall Discord from the official website. Be sure to download the “deb” file if using Linux.
  • On the mobile app, you can search for Discord in the App or Play Store (depending on whether you’re using iOS or Android). If there’s an update, there will be an “Update” button instead of an “Open” button. If you want to uninstall and install again, you can hit “Uninstall” next to this instead.
