Privacy Concerns With Alexa Notifications

One common concern among Amazon consumers is how secure or private Alexa devices actually are, and this carries over to Alexa having access to your notification information. There is an undeniable ease with having your Alexa device synched to different apps, however, that personal information is then available to Amazon and can be used to build a consumer profile for marketing purposes.

For example, if one of the common notifications that you have turned on through Alexa is appointment reminders, then Amazon potentially has access to your calendar which could have very personal information in it.

Say No to Notifications

There’s nothing quite like a little peace and quiet. Sometimes we just don’t want to be in the know; other times, we don’t want others to know about packages and other Amazon account activities. Alexa’s notifications aren’t always helpful, so it’s nice the developers let us customize them.

Following the steps above, you can achieve total peace or silence only the notifications you don’t want to hear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to turn off Alexa notifications in each topic?

Yes. Unfortunately, the powers at Amazon have yet to give us one master switch to disable all Alexa notifications at once. Until they do, follow and repeat the steps above for each topic in the Notifications Settings to disable Alexa notifications.

Can I temporarily disable Alexa Notifications?

If you don’t want notifications coming in at certain times of the day or night, you can enable Alexa’s Do Not Disturb feature. You can schedule Do Not Disturb or turn it on and off as needed.

If you want to enable Do Not Disturb on your Echo devices, open the Alexa app and go to Devices>Select Your Echo>Settings>Do Not Disturb. Here, you can set your Echos to leave you alone during certain times or toggle the Do Not Disturb switch until you’re ready to hear notifications again.

How do I know if I have Alexa notifications on my Echo?

The easiest way to find out if you have any notifications is to simply ask Alexa, “Alexa, do I have any notifications?” If you do, she’ll read them to you.

However, Alexa does offer visual indicators letting you know there are notifications in your inbox. The Echo and Echo Dot will display a yellow light ring, and the Echo Show devices will show a bell icon on the screen.

Will Alexa repeat notifications?

Yes. If you ask Alexa to “Repeat notifications,” she’ll begin going through your archive notifications. After hearing the one you missed, tell Alexa to “stop,” and she’ll quit reading them.

Can I turn off the news notifications on my Echo Show?

Yes. Another common annoyance from the Echo Show, aside from notifications, is the constant bombardment of news updates. Fortunately, you can disable those.

Swipe down from the top of the Echo Show’s home screen and tap Settings. Then, tap Home & Clock. Tap the Home Content option and toggle the switch next to News.
