How to Tag Someone on Twitter in 5 Steps

Tagging a user on social media is a convenient and fun way to get someone’s attention. While tagging somebody in a post does use up some of the precious 280 characters you have to work with, it does have some benefits.

Tagging makes it easy to make someone aware of your post, be it a friend, family member, someone you admire, or even a potential client. Therefore, a tag can increase appreciation of your post and even help you make sales if you’re using Twitter for business purposes.

If you’re new to Twitter or tagging in general, you may not know how to do it. Rest easy, because we’re going to tell you exactly how to tag someone on Twitter below.

How to Tag Someone in a Twitter Post

The most common way to tag someone on Twitter is probably in a post that you create. The process is similar on a computer and a mobile, but there are some slight differences. Find out how to do both here.

Step 1: Open Twitter and Log in

Go to the Twitter website or open the app on your smartphone. Next, make sure you’re logged in by checking the top right corner. If you’re not, log in first.

Step 2: Find the Compose Box

Now that you’re logged in, you should see a box at the top of the screen next to your profile icon. This is known as the compose box and is used to create tweets. This will contain the words ‘What’s happening?‘ on a computer browser.

Step 3: Create Your Post

Write whatever you wish to write in this box. Remember you only have 280 characters, and tagging somebody does use up your limited characters.

Step 4: Tag Someone in the Post Using the ‘@’ Symbol

Once you’re happy with the content of your post, you can tag someone. Do this by typing the ‘@‘ symbol wherever you like inside your post.

After the @, you can write the username of the person you wish to tag. As you type, a list of suggestions will be brought up, and you can then select the person you wish to tag.

Step 5: Check Your Post and then Hit Send

Now that your post is finished and you’ve tagged the people you want to, click the blue ‘Tweet‘ button to the bottom right of the compose box. This will post the tweet, which will show up underneath the box and on the feed on your profile. The person who has been tagged will receive a notification.

How to Tag Someone on Twitter on a Mobile

The method for tagging someone on Twitter on a mobile is largely the same, but the interface is a bit different from the computer version. We’ll explain how to do it below.

Step 1: Open the Twitter App and Log in

The first step is identical, simply open the app and log in. You’ll be brought to your home feed, where you’ll see updates from your acquaintances as well as suggested content.

Step 2: Press the Compose Button to Begin Your Post

This is where the process differs. Instead of the compose box being at the top of this screen, there is a blue button in the bottom right corner. This button looks like a feathered quill with a plus sign next to it. Press this to bring up the compose box.

Step 3: Write Your Post, Tag, and Tweet

From here, it’s familiar territory. Write the post how you want to, tag someone with the @ symbol, and press Tweet to finish. The biggest difference here is that you can’t tag yourself in a tweet on the mobile version. There are not many reasons you’d want to unless you’re making an instructional article, so no need to worry too much.
