How to Sign Out of Your Gmail Account (With Photos)

As a Gmail user, you probably sign in to your account more than you sign out. However, although signing out may not seem as necessary, it is one of the first precautions towards ensuring the safety of your account.

Your Gmail account contains sensitive information that can cost you a lot if it lands in the wrong hands. Fortunately, signing out of your Gmail account is not complicated, and you can complete it in just a few steps.

Easy Methods to Sign Out of Gmail with Steps

Method #1: Signing Out of Gmail on a Computer

Here are the steps to sign out of Gmail using a computer:

Step 1: Open your Gmail account. 

Step 2: Tap on the profile icon on the top-right side of Gmail.

If you don’t have a profile picture, the icon has the first letter of your account name.

Step 3: Click on Sign out.

This works if there is only one account on that device. If there are several accounts and you want to log out of all of them, click Sign out of all accounts.

However, if you want to sign out of only one Gmail account, you will need to remove the account from other devices. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Open your account and click on the profile icon at the top-right corner.

Step 2: Click on Manage your Google Account.

These settings will open on a new tab.

Step 3: Click security on the left panel.

Step 4: Scroll down to Your devices, then Manage all devices.

Under Manage all devices, you will see accounts where this device is logged into. Alternatively, you can see sessions rather than devices. 

The first device is the one where you are currently logged on. Under it are other devices to which this account is logged in. 

Step 5: Click on the device where you want to remove your account and select Sign out.

Step 6: Click Sign out to confirm.

If you want to sign out of Gmail on the device you currently use, you will need to do so on another device. For instance, if you are using your laptop and want to sign out, use your phone and remove access from that device. 

Method #2: Sign Out of Gmail on Android

Signing out of your Gmail account on your phone will mean signing out of your Google account. 

When you remove the account, you remove it from all apps that use this account on your device. Additionally, you won’t use Google products that need this account, such as Maps or Google Play. This is usually ideal if you want to get rid of your phone. 

The steps for signing out of the account may differ a bit based on the type of Android phone you are using. Nevertheless, the changes are minor, and you can still flow if you know what is expected. You can log out of your account through the settings app or Gmail app. 

Using the Settings App

Step 1: Open Settings and look for Accounts.

Step 2: Select the Google account you want to sign out of.

Step 3: Click Remove Account.

Using the Gmail App

Step 1: Open your Gmail account and click on the profile icon at the top right corner.

Step 2: Click on Manage accounts on this device.

Step 3: Tap the account you want to sign out of Gmail.

Step 4: Click on Remove Account.

Step 5: Tap Remove account again to confirm.

Method #3: Signing Out of Gmail on iPhone or iPad

When signing out of Gmail on iPhone or iPad, you can either temporarily pause your Gmail account or remove the account from the device. Below are the steps to follow.

Step 1: Open the Gmail app and click on the profile icon.

Step 2: On the menu that appears, tap Manage accounts on this device.

Step 3: Tap remove from this device.

Step 4: Click Remove to confirm your option.

This process will sign out the account from this device. If you intend to temporarily pause the account, tap on the switch next to the account name instead of Remove from this device. 

Method #4. Signing Out of Gmail by Changing Your Password

Changing your password is one of the straightforward ways of signing out of your Gmail on all connected devices. It is a good measure that is often recommended by Google in case of suspicious activities on your account. 

When you change your password, Google automatically signs you out of all devices where you were signed in, and you will need to use the new password to sign in. 

Below are the steps for signing out of your Gmail account by changing your password:

Step 1: Open your Gmail account and click on the profile icon.

Step 2: Select Manage your Google account. 

Step 3: Select Security on the left panel.

Step 4: Scroll down to Password.

Step 5: Enter the current password and click Next.

Step 6: Enter the new password and confirm the password, then select change password.

When you change your password, you will have secured your account. Google will send you an email to notify you that you have changed the password. Unfortunately, this method cannot be used to sign out of the device you are currently signed in on. 

Method #5. Signing Out of Gmail by Enabling Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication is an extra signing-in step that adds security to your Gmail account. With this verification process, in addition to giving your username and password when logging in, you will need to enter a code via text or a call. After you add two-factor authentication, you can revoke trusted devices, which will sign you out of devices you don’t trust. 

Below are the steps to follow.

Step 1: Log in to your account, and under Manage your Google Account, select Security.

Step 2: Select 2-Step Verification.

Step 3: Click on Get Started on the next display.

Step 4: Enter the phone number you want to use for verification.

Then select how you want to receive the verification codes, either by text messages or by email.

Step 5: Enter the code sent to your number and click Next.

Step 6: Click on Turn On.

Step 7: Enter your password for confirmation and click Next.

Step 8: Click Turn On to activate the 2-step verification.

Step 9: Scroll down and click Revoke All under Devices you trust.

Step 10: Click OK to revoke trust from all devices.

Having set the 2-step verification and revoked trust from all devices, you have signed out of all devices and will need to get a code to your phone to sign in. 

Method #6: Signing Out of Multiple Devices

If you have signed in to your Gmail account on multiple devices, you can sign out of them without eliminating the devices one by one. Here is how you do it:

Step 1: Log in to your account and scroll to the bottom of your inbox, where you will see the last account activity.

Step 2: Click on Details under Last account activity.

Step 3: Click on Log out from all sessions to log out from all signed-in devices.
