Bitcoin (BTC) has gained widespread adoption in recent years, with more and more people using it as a form of payment. There are lots of popular platforms for buying, selling, and sending Bitcoin, but one that has really taken off is Cash App. Cash App is a mobile payment service that most people will know can send regular currency (fiat currency), but what many people don’t realize is that Cash App can also send a few digital cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin among them. If you’re new to the platform, you may be wondering how to send Bitcoin on Cash App and today, we will be showing you exactly that. Let’s get started.
Understanding the Two Ways to Send BTC on Cash App
Before we lay out the steps, it’s important to understand that there are two methods to send BTC through Cash App, each with its own use cases.
You can break down how to send Bitcoin in two ways: through a $Cashtag or through a Bitcoin address. The $Cashtag method is a peer-to-peer (P2P) transaction that allows you to send Bitcoin instantly to any $Cashtag or another lightning-compatible wallet for free. The minimum amount per transaction to a $Cashtag is 0.00001 BTC or 1,000 sats (Satoshis). On the other hand, sending Bitcoin through a Bitcoin address uses the blockchain and can be sent from any wallet.
The main difference between these two methods is that the $Cashtag method is faster and free while the Bitcoin address method uses the blockchain and can be sent from any wallet. If you are sending Bitcoin to someone who has a $Cashtag or another lightning-compatible wallet, then it’s better to use the $Cashtag method because it’s faster and free. However, if you are sending Bitcoin to someone who doesn’t have a $Cashtag or another lightning-compatible wallet, then you should use the Bitcoin address method because it can be sent from any wallet.
If this is a bit complicated sounding, that’s because the blockchain is a bit complicated! If you don’t know anything about wallets, blockchain, or anything else, sending through Cash App to another Cash App account is probably the easiest and most straightforward method.
4 Steps for the $Cashtag Method
1. Open Cash App and Tap the “Cash” Button at the Bottom of the Screen

From here, enter the dollar value you would like to send and then select the drop-down menu that reads USD. Select Bitcoin in order to send Bitcoin, but keep in mind that it may require you to quickly purchase the Bitcoin to send if your account doesn’t already have a wallet balance. If so, follow the quick prompts. To convert cash to Bitcoin instantly without any extra steps, just use USD and then select Bitcoin on the following menu when selecting the recipient’s $Cashtag.
3. Enter the Recipient’s $Cashtag

This will take you to a new menu to send and receive Bitcoin. Since this method isn’t using the Lightning Wallet from Cash App, it will require that you already have Bitcoin in your wallet to send. If you don’t have any Bitcoin in your wallet, you can go ahead and purchase it.
3. Enter How Much Bitcoin You Want to Send

Similar to the standard cash-sending menu, go ahead and enter the dollar value of the Bitcoin you wish to send and then continue.
4. Enter the Wallet Address and Confirm the Payment
After you have Bitcoin in your wallet, go ahead and enter the wallet address of the person you are sending it to. Note that this will be impossible to recover if the wrong address is listed, so take extra care to enter the correct address, especially if it’s to a wallet outside of the Cash App ecosystem.
Finally, continue with the transaction and approve any other messages. This will involve you selecting a “speed” at which to send the Bitcoin over the blockchain, as well as a small fee for using the blockchain.
