Sometimes you have to pay a friend back for a fun night out. Other times, you have to request money from a client. Either way, you’ll have to know how to search for people on Venmo.
Venmo is similar to PayPal and CashApp, but it’s a bit more fun. You can make friends and keep up with other Venmo users. But how do you search for people on Venmo? If you have an account, follow our steps, and you’ll find Venmo users quickly. Keep reading to learn more.
Searching for Someone on Venmo
If you’ve ever sent someone money, you probably know how agonizing it feels to hope you sent it to the correct person. We’re here to ensure that you know how to properly search for people on Venmo and find the correct person every time.
Venmo allows you to search for someone in a number of ways. You can use the mobile app or a web browser. You can also search for someone you don’t know or search for someone who’s your friend. When searching for another Venmo user, you can use these parameters:
The quickest way to locate the right person is by checking their username or profile picture. Of course, you can also scroll through the main Venmo page to find your friend. Although, this takes more time, and it isn’t as easy as the steps we’ve outlined above.
Note: You can’t see all your Venmo friends on the website; use the Venmo app for that. Also, you can’t search for someone on Venmo using their phone number. But you can add your contacts to Venmo and add friends that way.
How to Search for People on Venmo on the Mobile App
We’ll start with a simple search for someone on Venmo. If you know the other person’s name, username, or business name. As long as you have that information, you can follow these steps to find the person you’d like to transfer money to or from. Here’s what to do:
Step 1: Launch the Vennmo App
Android and iOS users can get the Venmo app in the Google Play Store or the App Store. Tap to open the Venmo app and begin searching for people.
Step 2: Tap the Search Bar
After logging into Venmo, you’ll see a search bar at the top of the window. Tap the Search Bar to initiate your keyboard.
Step 3: Input a Username
Now, type the username, name, or business name. A list will appear.
How to Find Your Friends on the Venmo App
Venmo pulls contacts from your phone and automatically adds them as friends. If you want to search for people on Venmo who are already your friends, you can do that too. Here’s how to do it on the mobile app:
Step 1: Tap the Me Icon
Launch Venmo and ensure you log into your account. Then, tap the Me icon in the lower right corner.
Step 2: Tap the Number of Friends
Your profile page shows a few options. But you’ll see the number of Venmo friends you have at the top. Tap that number.
Step 3: View Your Friends
Now, you can scroll through the list and find your Venmo friends.
How to Search for Someone on Venmo Using the Website
If you prefer to use the Venmo website to send and request money, you can. Launch this website and sign into your Venmo account, and follow these steps to search for people:
Step 1: Click Search
The Venmo home page shows you a list of your friends and their activity on the main page. But there’s also a menu to the left. If you scroll down just a bit, you’ll see the Search option. Click Search to start looking for someone on Venmo.
Step 2: Input the Venmo User’s Name
There’s a search bar at the top of this page. Input the Venmo user’s name or username in this box.
Helpful hint: Click the People, Business, or Charities tab at the top to show results for the corresponding Venmo account.
Step 3: Find the People You Want on Venmo
Finally, you can scroll through the list and find the person you want.
Note: If you search by username, you won’t see a list of people. Only one option should appear, which will be the person you seek.
Finding People on Venmo — Troubleshooting
Hopefully, you’ve found the person you were looking for on Venmo, and you’re done. But if you’ve run into problems, there are some troubleshooting steps that you can take. Perhaps Venmo didn’t sync your contacts, or you entered the wrong username.
No matter the problem, browse through these sections to correct it.
Someone Doesn’t Appear in Your Venmo Search
If you followed the steps above, but your friend isn’t appearing in your search results, it’s most likely you’ve input the wrong parameters. As stated above, you can’t search for someone with their phone number. So, you’ll want to ensure you’re searching for someone on Venmo with their name or username.
If you are searching for someone with their username, try typing @ before it. Then, ensure you type any letters or symbols as shown. If the user isn’t with you, have them send you a screenshot of their Venmo profile to verify you’ve typed it correctly.
Lastly, if the person you want to find is with you, you can add them using a QR code. Open the Venmo app and tap the QR icon in the top right corner of the app. Tap Scan code to send them money, or tap Venmo Me to let that user send you money.
Note: If you’re using the Venmo web version, ensure you’ve selected the appropriate search parameters (People, Business, or Charity).
Can’t Find Someone on Venmo in Your Friends’ List?
Another issue you may run into is not finding someone in your friend list. Fortunately, this is relatively easy to fix. Venmo can find people using your phone’s contacts (at this time, the option to link Venmo to Facebook isn’t working).
Open Venmo and tap the Me icon. Then, tap the settings cog in the top right corner. Select Friends and Social in the menu. Toggle the switch to the right of Phone Contacts.
Note: If the Phone Contacts option is already on, turn it off and turn it back on. Then, log out of the Venmo app and sign back in. Your missing friend should appear.

Finding people on Venmo is incredibly simple. You can search by the user’s name or username. When you find the person you’re looking for, you can then verify you have the right person with their profile picture or username.

In 2023, the IRS announced that it would require payment apps like Venmo to report all transactions over $600 to the IRS. In general, money exchanged between friends and family via Venmo is not subject to taxation as long as the transactions are personal and not for goods or services.
