Our fingers can be clumsy at times and we may accidentally delete important text messages on our phones. It could be a message from a loved one, a work-related text, or important information we need to reference later. Losing such can be quite stressful, but fortunately, there are easy ways to retrieve deleted texts on your Samsung phone.
We’ll walk you through three simple methods step-by-step so you may have a better idea of where to start should you accidentally delete your messages or lose them due to a phone malfunction.
Let’s get started!
First Things First: Confirm the Texts Aren’t in the Trash
The first thing you should do when you realize you’ve deleted an important text message is to check your Samsung phone’s trash bin.
Similar to your computer’s trash bin, your Samsung phone has a trash bin where deleted messages and other files are stored temporarily — that is, if your phone is running Android 11 or later.
So, before panicking, check the trash first. To do so, open the Messaging app on your Samsung phone and then tap on the three dots in the upper right corner of the screen.
From the pop-up menu select Trash.
You will see a list of all the messages that have been deleted. Select the message you want to retrieve and tap on Restore.
If you didn’t find yours, don’t fret. There are a few more easy methods you could try.
(Easiest) Method #1: Using Samsung Cloud
If you didn’t find the deleted message in the trash bin, your next option is to restore it from a backup.
Samsung phones come with a built-in backup feature called Samsung Cloud, which automatically backs up your messages, contacts, and other data. If you have this feature enabled, you can easily retrieve deleted texts from the Samsung Cloud.
Step 1: Go to Settings on Your Samsung Phone
To start the process, you need to access your phone’s settings. You can do this by tapping on the Settings app on your home screen or app drawer.
Step 2: Open Your Samsung Account Settings
Once you’re on the Settings screen, tap on your Samsung account.
Scroll until you locate Samsung Cloud under Apps and Features.
Step 3: Select Restore Data
Under the Backup and Restore section, you should see the Restore data option. Tap on it.
Step 4: Choose a Backup
In the next screen, you should see a list of the backups you can restore your data from. Tap on one.
Step 5: Select Messages, Then Tap on Restore Now
You should now see the various backed-up data options you can restore. Make sure Messages is selected alongside anything else you would like to restore.
Tap on Restore now to initiate the restoration process.
Depending on the size of the backup and the number of messages you’re restoring, this process may take several minutes to complete. That’s it! Your deleted messages should now be restored.

Method #2: Using a Third-Party Cloud Backup Tool
If you don’t have Samsung Cloud enabled or if the messages aren’t there, you could try retrieving them from a third-party backup if you’d set up one prior.
SMS Backup & Restore is a popular app for backing up and restoring text messages on Android phones.
Here’s how to use it to restore if you backed up your messages using this app.
Step 1: Open the App and Tap on Restore
Open the SMS Backup & Restore app and tap on Restore to initiate the restoration process.
Step 2: Select the Backup Location to Restore From
The app will display a list of all the backup files available on your device. Select the backup file that contains the deleted text messages you want to retrieve.
Step 3: Select the Messages
After selecting the location, the app will display a list of all the backed-up content. Make sure to toggle messages on as well as call logs if you’d like to.
Then, tap on Restore and wait for the process to complete after which your deleted messages should be restored.
Method #3: Using a Data Recovery Tool
The first two methods will, of course, only work if a backup exists. If that doesn’t apply in your case, you can try using data recovery software.
When you delete a message (or anything for that matter) on your device, be it your phone or PC, it’s not entirely erased from the memory. Instead, the operating system marks the space occupied by the deleted message as available for new data. Until new data is written over that space, the deleted message remains intact and recoverable using data recovery software.
Data recovery software works by scanning the storage space of your device for any data that is marked as deleted but still exists in the memory. Once it finds the deleted data, it attempts to recover it and make it accessible again.
A data recovery software can thus scan your phone and help recover your deleted messages alongside other files.
Here are some popular data recovery software programs you’d want to consider:
- Wondershare’s Dr. Fone
- EaseUS MobiSaver
The procedure is generally the same. You’ll need to download and install the software on your computer. Once that’s done, connect your Samsung phone to your computer using a USB cable. Run the data recovery software and follow the on-screen instructions.
The recovery process may take some time depending on the size of your phone’s memory and the amount of data stored on it, but it’s well worth the wait.
Keep in Mind
It’s worth remembering that using data recovery software programs to retrieve deleted messages is not always guaranteed success. If the messages were deleted a long time ago, or if they’ve been overwritten by new data, the software may not be able to retrieve them.
If you’ve tried all the methods mentioned above and still can’t retrieve your deleted messages, don’t lose hope yet. There are professional data recovery services you can contact, such as KLDiscovery or DriveSavers. These services have specialized tools and expertise that may help to recover your lost data, though they can cost you a pretty penny.
Alternatively, you can contact your carrier to see if they can help. They may have a backup of your messages or be able to assist you in some other way. Whatever you do, it’s advisable to act quickly and avoid using your phone until you’ve tried to retrieve the lost messages as this could increase the chances of overwriting the deleted data.
Losing important text messages can be a harrowing experience, but thankfully, there are several ways to retrieve deleted texts on your Samsung phone.
The easiest and quickest method is to retrieve the messages from your cloud backup, but if that fails, you can always turn to third-party data recovery tools.
That being said, remember prevention is always better than the cure, so it’s important to regularly back up your text messages to avoid losing them in the first place. You can check out our guides to back up your Samsung phone here or Android device here for tips and step-by-step instructions.
