How To Report Someone On Discord, In 3 Steps

Key Points

  • Discord doesn’t have a simple Report button, so users must follow specific steps to report someone for violating the Community Guidelines.
  • Enabling Developer Mode is necessary for reporting on iOS and desktop devices, but not on Android.
  • To report a user, collect their User ID and submit a ticket through Discord’s Trust & Safety team.

Discord is a lot of fun with friends but exasperating with foes. Fortunately, you can file a report and let Discord and server admins know when someone is causing problems. Support could ban the offender, kick them off a Discord server, or suspend them for violating the company’s T&Cs or server rules.

Is someone bothering you and other Discord users? We’ll show you how to report them in a moment.

How Reporting Someone on Discord Works

Discord isn’t like social media sites where you can click a Report button, fill out a form, and move on with your day. Some may see it as over-complicated or confusing, so we have included this section first.

Report Someone Who Violated Discord’s Community Guidelines

Before even considering reporting someone, look over Discord’s Community Guidelines. Not every annoying or uncomfortable interaction is report-worthy. Assuming the Discord user you want to report did violate the Guidelines, feel free to follow the steps below.

Enable Developer Mode to Report Someone on Discord

Next, you may encounter issues if you don’t enable Developer Mode. Based on our tests in 2023, this isn’t necessary on the Android mobile app. But the iOS mobile app and every other device still require users to enable Developer Mode.

Fortunately, the steps are simple. Simply tap the profile icon in the lower right corner. Desktop users can click the Settings cog in the screen’s bottom left corner. It’s next to their Discord username.

Now, scroll down and tap Advanced. Then, tap the toggle switch next to Developer Mode.

Toggle the switch to enable developer mode.

Note: If you don’t enable Developer Mode, the option to copy the Message ID will not appear.

After collecting the necessary information, you can open a web browser and visit this link. Gather as much information as possible (Message ID, User ID, etc.). The Discord team will receive and review the content for guideline violations.

How to Report Someone on Discord – Desktop App & Browser

If you want to report a Discord user to Discord for violating the company’s policies, follow the steps in this section. Whether reporting a message or someone’s account, here’s what to do:

Note: Most of us use the Discord desktop app for OSX or Windows. However, these instructions work for mobile browsers (enable desktop mode), web browsers, and the desktop app.

Before we dive into the step-by-step guide then you may want to check out this video which explain where to report a user on Discord and how to open a new ticket for doing so.

Step 1: Go to the Offender’s Profile

Start by locating the user. You can go to the chat or server and click on the user’s profile or search for the person’s ID using the search bar.

The quickest way to access someone’s profile is to click their profile icon in the chat window. Then, hover over their profile picture in the pop-up window. View Profile will appear in the profile image. Click it.

Open the offender’s profile on Discord.

Note: If you want to report a user’s message to Discord’s Trust & Safety team, hover over the message, click the three-dot icon, and select Copy Message ID.

Step 2: Copy the User ID

A new window will appear when you click the user’s profile. Click the three-dot menu in the top right corner. Then, select Copy User ID.

Find and copy their User ID.

Step 3: Submit a Ticket

After collecting the User ID (or message ID), you can create a ticket. Include all pertinent information and click Submit at the bottom of the page.

Create a ticket under the appropriate category.

How to Report Someone on Discord – iOS Mobile App

If you’re an iOS user, follow the same steps above. You can copy the member’s User ID, then fill out this form. Launch Discord and a web browser, then follow these steps:

Note: Ensure you’ve enabled Developer Mode by tapping your profile and going to Advanced>Developer Mode.

Step 1: Long-Press the User’s Profile Icon

Open a chat where the offending user likes to offend, and long-press their profile icon. This action will bring up a new sub-menu, and you can proceed to the next step.

Access the offender’s user profile for more options.

Step 2: Tap Copy User ID

The sub-menu has several options. But you’ll see a three-dot menu icon in the top right corner. Tap it. Then, tap Copy User ID.

When you open the three-dot menu, you will see the option to copy the user profile ID.

Helpful hint: If you have multiple IDs (Message and User IDs), copy and paste them into your iOS Notes app.

Step 3: File the Report

Now that you collected all pertinent information pull up a browser and go to the Discord Report page (you can Google it or click the link). Fill out the form and tap Submit.

Create and submit a ticket to Discord support.

Note: Select Trust & Safety from the first drop-down menu to access the form.

How to Report Someone on Discord – Android App

In days past, those using the Discord mobile app would need to enable Developer mode (Profile>Advanced>Developer Mode) to copy a user ID and report someone. However, things have gotten a bit easier for Android users.

If you’re running the latest version of the Discord app, follow these steps:

Note: If the Report option doesn’t appear, enable Developer Mode in the Discord app.

Step 1: Go to the Offender’s Profile

Naturally, we must locate the Discord user. Open a chat where they’re communicating, use the Search icon at the bottom of the screen, or look at the Member’s list in the server. Then, long-press their profile icon.

Open the offender’s Discord profile.

Step 2: Tap the Three-Dot Icon

Tap the three-dot icon when the sub-menu appears.

Locate and open the three-dot menu.

Step 3: Tap Report this User for Abuse

Now, tap Report this User for Abuse and follow the prompts.

Finally, open the link to report the user.

How to Report Someone’s Message on Discord

Perhaps you want to report a message and not the account. Fortunately, you can report someone’s message on Discord on all devices.

Step 1: Hover Over the User

First, go to the chat where your foe is sending inappropriate messages. Then, hover over the message for more options (don’t click anything yet).

Hover over the offender’s Discord messages.

Step 2: Click the Three-Dot Icon

Looking to the right, you’ll see a three-dot menu icon. Click it.

Navigate to the three-dot menu and open it.

Step 3: Click Report Message

If you want to report a message, you must copy the Message ID. Hover over the user’s message until a small sub-menu appears. Click the three-dot icon. Then, select Copy Message ID and fill out the form listed above.

Select Report Message in the drop-down menu.

However, most of our devices also give us the Report Message option. Click or tap the Report Message option and fill out the form.

Report Someone on Discord – Wrap Up

Granted, Discord could make reporting ill-intended users much easier. But hopefully, we’ve made the process pretty simple for you. The company doesn’t tolerate many things like spamming or hate, so if someone violates the guidelines, use one of the methods above to report them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to enable developer mode to report someone on the Discord Mobile app?

It depends. Our tests in 2023 proved we didn’t have to enable Developer Mode on an Android device, but we did on iOS. You can try updating the Discord app to see if the Copy User ID option appears. If it doesn’t, enable Developer Mode.

Will someone know if I report them?

No. Well, they may use deductive reasoning to figure out who reported them, but Discord won’t come out and say it was you.

How do I block someone on Discord?

If you don’t have enough to file a report, you can still get some peace and quiet by blocking the user. Follow the steps above to copy a Message ID, but click Block instead.

Will I know what happened to someone when I report them on Discord?

Discord won’t send you any communications about the actions taken against the user. However, you can navigate to their profile and see if they were banned. If the user’s name changed to DeletedUser####, Discord’s Trust and Safety team likely also found them in violation of the Community Guidelines and terminated their account.

Does Discord IP ban people?

Yes! If the offense is great enough, Discord can IP ban a user’s account. What’s more, based on recent tests, even a standard VPN won’t work to create a new account and start harassing people again (we don’t harass people or violate guidelines on Discord, but we’re pretty savvy and figure these things out).
