How to Rename AirPods

AirPods Pro vs AirPods 3

How to Rename AirPods

Have you ever tried to pair your AirPods only to find multiple ‘AirPods’ on the list of paired devices? That’s not unusual. Perhaps, you’re trying to track your AirPods in Find My iPhone but don’t know which pair you need. Don’t worry. You can rename your AirPods, making them easier to find and pair.

Apple’s AirPods adopt the name of their companion device (any Apple device you use with your AirPods). So, you may see your name, the name of your iPhone, or the former owner’s name if you bought a second-hand device. You can easily rename your AirPods or update the name to match yours by following the below steps.

Rename AirPods on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch

Before renaming your Airpods, ensure the device(s) have enough battery life to stay connected to your iOS device. Next, remember that only an Apple product will let you change the name of your AirPods. If you pair them with an Android or Windows-based device, the option will not appear.

Finally, ensure that your AirPods are already paired with the device you’re using to change the name. Your AirPods will, by default, adopt the name of your iOS device. If all looks good, follow the steps.

Step 1: Place Your AirPods in Your Ears

The option to rename your AirPods will not appear if the buds are still in their case. Take them out of the case and wear them.

If they don’t connect to your companion device automatically, navigate to your device’s Bluetooth settings and tap to connect them.

Step 2: Open Settings

You can find the device’s Settings app on the home screen or in the app library.

Because the AirPod case has only one button you use to pair them, you’ll need to open your companion device’s Settings app to customize them.

Helpful Hint: If you can’t find the Settings app, swipe to the right and type ‘Settings’ in the search bar at the top.

Step 3: Tap on Bluetooth

Tap Bluetooth, which is typically near the top of the Settings page.

You’ll find your AirPods in the Bluetooth settings.

Step 4: Tap the i icon to the Right of Your AirPods

Locate your AirPods in the list that appears on this new page.

To the right of each known Bluetooth device is a lowercase i icon. Tap the lowercase i icon with a circle around it to rename your AirPods.

Step 5: Tap Name

At the top of the new window, you’ll see an option to input your AirPod’s new name.

Tap that box to activate the cursor.

Helpful Hint: You can change other settings like automatic ear detection and tap to pause functions on this page too!

Step 6: Type the Name

After renaming your AirPods, they’ll appear with the new name on the iCloud and any Bluetooth-enabled device you use.

You can name your AirPods anything you want. Type the name at the top of the window where you see the text box. Then, you don’t need to save your changes; tap the back arrow in the upper left corner to go back to Settings or close out of the app.

If you’ve followed the steps above, you should have successfully changed your AirPods name on your iPhone. However, if you need clarification on any of these steps or if you prefer a video tutorial, we found this great guide on YouTube.

How to Change AirPods Name on a Mac

Perhaps you’d rather change your AirPods name from a Mac or MacBook. If this is your only Apple device, you can still change your AirPod’s name. Like the method above, put your AirPods in your ears and ensure they connect to your Mac. Otherwise, you won’t see the option to rename your AirPods.

Step 1: Click on the Apple Icon in the Upper Left Corner

Click the Apple icon to see a dropdown menu and move to the next step.

Locating the Apple Menu might be difficult if you’re new to the OS. But it’s the Apple icon in the upper left corner.

Step 2: Click on System Preferences

Click the System Preferences option.

A small dropdown menu will appear with options like About this mac and Restart.

Helpful Hint: System Preferences is where you go to customize many things on your Mac, check your network, and more!

Step 3: Click on Bluetooth

Click on the Bluetooth symbol to change your AirPod’s name.

Step 4: Right-Click on Your AirPods

Right-click (control+click on a MacBook) to reveal a new dropdown menu.

Locate your AirPods in the device list. Then, hover your cursor over the selection.

Step 5: Click Rename

Click Rename in the dropdown menu that appears after right-clicking your AirPods.

Step 6: Type the Name and Click Rename

Your AirPod’s new name will update on all your devices.

Type the new name you want to give your AirPods in the text box. Then, click Rename.

A Brand New Name

You can change your AirPod’s name as often as you’d like by following the steps above. Perhaps something goofy is more to your liking than a traditional name, or you accidentally paired your AirPods with someone else’s iOS device, and now you feel disconnected from your little audio companions.

No matter the reasons, pair your AirPods to your phone and head to the settings. Then, your AirPods can have a customized name that matches your personality and helps you easily identify them.
