Follow the simple steps below to connect Spotify to your Apple Watch so you can enjoy your favorite tunes.
How to Play Spotify on Apple Watch
Before you can start listening to Spotify on your Apple Watch, you’ll have to install the app, sign into your account, and sync it with your Apple Watch. Although it may seem tedious at first, it is quite simple.
Follow these steps to play Spotify on your Apple Watch:
Step 1: Install Spotify on Your iPhone

Your iPhone is your Apple Watch’s companion device. So, you’ll use your iPhone to set up Spotify. If you don’t have Spotify downloaded already, head to the App Store and download Spotify.
After the app installs, sign into your Spotify account.
Step 2: Open the Apple Watch app
Now, you can open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.

Helpful hint: The Apple Watch app on your iPhone is an app with a watch symbol. If you’re having trouble finding it, swipe left until you see the App Library (swipe to the left to view the search bar on older iOS versions). Then, type Apple Watch to find the app easily).
Step 3: Tap Install
Scroll to the Available Apps section at the bottom of the Apple Watch app. Then, tap Install next to Spotify.

Note: If the download circle keeps spinning, but doesn’t do anything, ensure your Apple Watch is charged fully and powered on.
Step 4: Tap Spotify on Your Apple Watch
After installing Spotify, you can click the Crown to access all apps. Tap Spotify and choose which playlist you want to hear.

You can listen to Spotify on your Apple Watch through the accessory’s speakers or connect your AirPods.
Step 5: Scroll to Playlists
Grab your Apple Watch, tap Spotify, and scroll to the left. Tap Playlists and choose the one you want to play.

How to Play Spotify from Your Apple Watch Face
We’ll call this a ‘hidden feature’ because we didn’t know about it for a time. But you can customize your Apple Watch face and add your favorite apps (called Complications) to the home screen.
If you go to the Face Gallery on the Apple Watch app, you’ll see several layouts with various complications. However, none of them have the Spotify app. So, we’ll have to add it.
You can use the Apple Watch app on your iPhone or the Apple Watch itself. After adding Spotify to the home screen, you don’t have to click the crown button and scroll apps. You can start playing Spotify music on your Apple Watch with the tap of a finger. Just do this:
Note: We’re using the Apple Watch itself to customize the face. If you want to use the Watch app on your iPhone, tap Face Gallery at the bottom, then tap Edit and Complications. Tap Spotify to add it to the home screen.
Step 1: Long-Press the Watch Face
Grab your Apple Watch then, long-press the face until it shows the face and a couple of options at the bottom.

Step 2: Tap Edit
After long-pressing your watch’s screen, you’ll see an Edit button at the bottom. Tap Edit.

Step 3: Scroll to Complications

Now, scroll to the right until you see the Complications page.
Step 4: Tap the Square
The screen will show you where you can add Spotify. Tap one of the boxes where you want to add the Spotify complication on your Watch.

Step 5: Choose Spotify
Now, scroll to Spotify and tap it.

Helpful hint: Your Complications are in alphabetical order. Spotify will be near the bottom.
Troubleshooting
While the Apple Watch is great, it can be finicky at times. If you can’t get the Spotify Complication to install, or you can’t get your music to play, browse through this section, and we’ll help you fix it.
Spotify Won’t Install
First, if Spotify doesn’t install, you can try a few things to fix it. Try these solutions:
- Make sure the Apple Watch is paired with your iPhone
- Put the Watch on its charger
- Ensure your iPhone is charged and connected to Wi-Fi (Settings>Wi-Fi>Select your network)
- Update your Apple Watch (Watch App>General>Software Update)
- Update the Spotify app on your iPhone (App Store>Spotify>Update)
As long as your iPhone is paired with your Apple Watch, connected to Wi-Fi, and everything is up-to-date and charged, Spotify should install.
Spotify Won’t Play
Only Premium subscribers can play Spotify from their Apple Watch. If you aren’t a Premium subscriber, ensure your phone is within Bluetooth range (approximately 30 feet) to play Spotify.
If you are a Premium subscriber, ensure the Spotify app on your iPhone is logged into tcorrectght account. Also, some Spotify plans only allow one person to stream at a time. Ensure no one else is streaming on your account (including pausing the music on your iPhone if it’s playing).
Miscellaneous Fixes
Before Spoplays play on your Apple Watch, there are a few requirements your devices need to meet. Check out this list:
- Your Apple Watch is running WatchOS 7 or later
- You have an internet connection (Wi-Fi or cellular)
- You’re using an Apple Watch Series 3 or later
- You have Spotify Premium, or your iPhone is nearby
Assuming you meet all these requirements, try turning your watch off and on (hold the long button below the crown and slide the power button). Then, ensure Bluetooth is turned on (Swipe down from the top and tap the Bluetooth icon so it turns blue).
Lastly, you can call Apple Support for more help. The company has excellent customer service and can quickly help you.
