How to Make Someone a Mod on Discord in 4 Steps

Key Points

  • A Mod, or Moderator, is a trusted individual with administrative permissions access.
  • Assigning specific permissions to Mods is important to prevent misuse of power.
  • Creating a new role and assigning it to Mods is the first step in making someone a Mod on Discord.
  • Mods help keep Discord servers clean and handle administrative tasks, allowing server owners to focus on content creation.
  • Choosing the right Mods and giving them appropriate power is crucial for the success of a Discord server.

Sometimes, we all need a little extra help. Running Discord servers isn’t an easy task. You’ll need to mute, block, and ban people, give your members updates, and join the conversation. Fortunately, you can add someone as a Mod on Discord to help with the administrative tasks and make your chat more interesting.

A Mod, or Moderator, is a trusted individual with administrative permissions access. Of course, you may know them as the ones policing your favorite servers. Whether you love or hate them, Mods are incredibly useful, and we’ll show you how to promote your most trusted advisers in the following sections.

A Discord Mod is simply a server member with special permissions. They can block or ban offensive users and handle other administrative tasks. It’s imperative that you only assign Moderator privileges to those you can trust. Mods can do a lot of damage to your server and your reputation if you aren’t careful.

They’ll have access to so many permissions, that Mods with a power complex or poor communication skills can hurt your Discord server and drive members away. You can assign an Administrator permission, which grants access to everything, or you can set specific permissions.

Some of us prefer the latter because we have trust issues. So in the following sections, we’ll review the most common permissions to allow when you make someone a Mod on Discord.

General Permissions

There are many permissions you can grant others on Discord. Most of us with Discord servers assign our Mods all of the permissions in the General section. These are:

  • View Channels
  • Manage Channels
  • Manage Roles
  • Create/Manage Expressions
  • View Audit Logs
  • Manage Webhooks
  • Manage Server

Your Mods should have access to all of these settings unless you want them to have limited access to your server.

Membership Permissions

Another set of key permissions lies in the Membership Permissions section. Here are the ones we recommend giving to your Mods:

  • Create Invite
  • Manage Members
  • Kick/Ban Members
  • Timeout Members

Text/Voice Channel Permissions

There are sections for voice and text channels as well. Many of these permissions are fine to assign to everyone. However, here’s our list of the must-haves for Mods:

  • Create Public/Private Threads
  • Embed Links
  • Attach Files
  • Mention @Everyone
  • Manage Messages/Threads
  • Read Messages
  • Speak
  • Use Activities
  • Use Soundboard
  • Priority Speaker
  • Mute Members
  • Deafen Members
  • Move Members
  • Create/Manage Events

While we wouldn’t assign these permissions to everyone, they’re must-have options if you trust your Mods. Now that we’ve covered the permissions to assign, it’s time to dive into our tutorial. Remember, you can review the lists above while walking through the tutorial.

We named our Moderators to make it easier. Of course, you could name yours something really cool, like “Guardians of the Server,” if you want.

Note: Be sure to choose a color so your members can differentiate your Mods from everyone else.

Step 4: Set the Mod Permissions

Making Mods: The Wrap-Up

Mods are the gatekeepers of your Discord server. They help keep your chats clean and take care of time-consuming administrative tasks. The best Mods are loved by all your server members and ensure you can focus on the important things like creating content and posting updates.

Of course, with great power comes great responsibility. Choosing the wrong Mods or giving them too much power will hurt your channel. So, choose wisely and follow our expert tips above to maximize the potential of your server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make someone a Mod on the Discord mobile app?

Yes! The process is nearly identical to the steps above. Go to the Server’s Settings and click Roles. Create the role by tapping the + sign in the top right corner. Select the Moderator option and choose the members. When you’re ready to make the changes, click Finish at the bottom of the page.

What's the difference between a Moderator and a Manager?

A Discord Manager can create and delete channels, roles, emojis, and nearly anything a Server owner can do. A Moderator can only moderate the channels and server members. Whereas Mods can help you keep your chats clean and handle basic administrative tasks like posting links, Managers have God-mode powers over your server.

How do I know who has Mod capabilities on my server?

The easiest and fastest way to see your Mods is to look in the menu on the right side. Their username will appear as the color of the Moderator role you created above.

Can I give Mods custom icons on Discord?

Yes! Go to the Roles section in Settings and click the Role Icon button. Use an emoji from your server or create an image and upload it specifically for your Mods. This option is great for helping everyone in the channels identify your Mods.

How do I revoke Mod privileges for a member?

You can remove the Mod privileges by following the steps above in reverse. Click the Discord user in the menu to the right on the Server page. Hover over the moderator role and click the X button. Privileges will be removed immediately.
