Emojis bring life to a Slack chat – we all know it. Whether it’s expressing your emotions, commemorating memorable occasions, or adding some flavor to the conversation, a well-crafted emoji is a perfect way to liven up a conversation. But why stop at someone else’s predefined emojis?
Slack allows you to upload your own emojis, meaning you can make creative and unique designs for your team. These custom emojis will appear as small images next to your messages, just like regular emojis. While making your emojis may sound intimidating, you only need the right image and a few clicks.
Adding custom emojis is an exciting way to personalize your Slack conversations and show off your creativity. This article will show you how to make your own Slack emojis with a few simple steps. We’ll also cover how you customize your workspace using emoji packs or aliases. So, let’s get started.
- The image size should be 128 x 128 pixels and under 128KB.
- You can also add GIFs, but they should have less than 50 frames.
- You can only add custom emojis to your workspace using a desktop computer or an iOS device. Android devices do not have this feature.
- All members in a workspace except for guests can add custom emojis. The feature is available on all plans (Free, Pro, Business, and Enterprise Grid).
How to Make a Slack Emoji on a Desktop
Desktops are a great place to start when creating your Slack emoji.
The first thing you need to do is to find an image you want to use for your emoji. It should be small (no larger than 128×128 pixels) and in a standard image format, like .jpg or .png. Animated GIFs are also supported but should have less than 50 frames.
If your image is larger than 128 x 128 pixels, you’ll need to resize it. You can use various photo editing software, including Adobe Photoshop and GIMP.
Here are the steps:
Step 1: Launch Slack on Your Desktop
Open Slack and go to the workspace where you want to upload your emoji. Workspaces are listed on the left-hand side of the screen.
If you are in the wrong workspace, click on the drop-down next to your workspace name and scroll down to the Switch Workspaces tab.
Step 2: Go to the Dialog Box
Now that you’re in the right workspace, you’ll see the dialogue box at the bottom of the screen. It’s a white box with a text field and editing tools.
Step 3: Click the Smiley Icon
The dialogue box has several icons right below it. You’ll see a + sign, a video camera icon, a voice recorder icon, and a smiley face icon. Click the smiley face icon to open the emoji selector.
Step 4: Add Your Custom Emoji
Once the emoji selector is open, you’ll see many emojis you can use when conversing with colleagues. At the bottom left of the emoji selector, you’ll see the “Add Emoji” text. Click it to open a window where you can upload your emoji.
Step 5: Upload Your Image
Once the upload window is open, click the “Upload Image” button. You’ll be asked to select your image from its file folder on your computer. Find the image you want to use and click “Open.” The image will upload, and you can give it a name. Click save once the upload is complete.
You’re not limited to one custom emoji, either. You can upload multiple images and create as many emojis as you like. Your workspace members will also be able to use them.
To view your custom emoji, look for the Slack icon at the top of the emoji menu. It’s a small Slack logo; clicking it will take you to your custom emojis.
As you can see, adding an emoji is really simple. In the following video, YouTuber Checkmark Tutorials walks you through the steps.
How to Make Slack Emojis on Mobile
You can also add custom emojis on mobile. However, this feature is only available on iOS devices. Android users will have to wait a little longer until this feature is available.
Here are the steps to make an emoji on iOS:
Step 1: Launch Slack
Assuming you already have an image chosen, start by launching Slack on your iOS device. Open your workspace, then launch the dialogue box by clicking on the pen icon at the bottom right.
When the dialogue is open, click the smiley icon.
Step 2: Type a Name for Your Emoji
Type any name you’d like for your emoji. If the name is already taken, choose another name. Click on “Add Custom Emoji” to continue.
Once the upload window is open, click the Browse button and select your image from its file location. Once done, click “Add” at the bottom right corner of the pop-up window.
To view your custom emoji, type the name you gave it in the search bar of the emoji selector. Your custom emoji will appear above the regular emojis and can be used just like any other.
How to Add Emoji Packs on Slack
Slack has several pre-made emoji packs that you can access on your workspace. Basically, emoji packs are collections of themed emojis that you can add to your workspace. These packs will add fun and flair to your conversations.
The following are steps on how to add emoji packs:
Step 1: Open Slack on Your Desktop
Launch Slack on your desktop and go to the workspace you’d like to add an emoji pack.
Step 2: Go to the Dialogue Box
Look for the dialogue box at the bottom of the screen. Below it, you’ll see a smiley face icon. Click on it and then click on the “Add Emoji” option.
Step 3: Select Emoji Packs
You’ll see two options, one is “Custom Emoji,” and the other is “Emoji Packs.” Choose the Emoji Packs option, and several themed packs will appear.
Step 4: Choose a Pack
Browse through the available emoji packs and select the one you want. Once you’ve chosen a pack, click “Add Pack,” and the selected pack will be added to your workspace.
To remove an emoji pack from your workspace, click on the smiley face icon>add emoji>emoji packs, and select the emoji pack you want to remove. However, removing a single emoji from a pack is impossible. You must remove the entire pack to eliminate a single emoji.
How to Add Emoji Aliases to Slack
Emoji aliases are words or phrases that prompt the display of an emoji when typed in a conversation. It’s similar to adding an emoji reaction but much more efficient. Here’s how you can add an alias:
Step 1: Open Slack on Your Desktop
The first step is to launch Slack on your desktop and open your workspace. Click your workspace name on the top right corner of the page to open a list of options. Among the options, you’ll see “Administration.” Click on it.
Step 2: Select Customize [Workspace Name]
When you click the administration option, a side panel will open. Here, select “Customize [Workspace Name].” A new tab will open, allowing you to customize your workspace.
This tab automatically opens the Emoji panel already selected. Click on “Add Alias,” then choose an Emoji.
Step 3: Add Your Alias
Choose the emoji you want to add and type your alias. Click “Save,” and your alias will be added.

Note that this feature isn’t available now if you are an Android user. However, you can use your desktop application or web browser to create your emojis. And if you’re ever in doubt, you can always rely on the vast library of pre-made emojis that come with Slack.
