It’s no secret that group chats can be tiring. Group chats can be a seemingly endless generator of spam notifications. It can be annoying. Especially when you want to use your smartphone but can’t because you constantly have to swipe notifications away. But how can you leave the group chat? Is it possible on Android? Today we’ll explore how to leave a group chat on Android in easy steps.
Fact or Fiction: Can You Leave a Group Chat on Android?
The short answer is yes and no. It depends on what kind of phone you have. Some Android phones allow users to leave by tapping a few buttons in the message settings. For others, it can be downright impossible. The best that you can hope for is to mute, delete, and ignore. Although it is frustrating that there isn’t a leave group chat button for every Android device, it is possible to get the constant spam to stop.
In this article, we’ll demonstrate how to leave a group chat on Android using two different methods. The first method will be for those that have a leave group chat option, the second method is for those that don’t. If you’re not sure if you have the leave option, follow along with the first method until you can’t. If you can’t complete it, no worries! Just start using the second method and that is guaranteed to work, even if it is a little tedious.
Method 1: Leave Group Chat Button
For this method, you will need an Android device and a group chat that you are a part of that you want to leave.
Step 1: Open Messaging App
Open up the Android device and go to the main home screen. From there, tap on the native Android messaging app.
Step 2: The Group Chat
Now that you are in the main messaging app, scroll down to the group chat that you want to leave and tap on it.
Step 3: Profile Icons
Once the main group chat window is open, look at the top right and you should see an icon that looks to have three people crowded together inside a colored circle. Tap on it.
Step 4: People and Options
Once you tap on the profile icon, a small window should appear that says “People and options”. Tap on the “People and options” button.
Step 5: Leave
Tapping on the “People and options” button will open up a new window. In this window, you can edit how the group chat works and even who is invited or kicked out of the group chat. At the bottom of the window, there should be a button that says “Leave”. Tap “Leave” to exit the group chat.

Step 3: Notifications
In this new window, you will see several options. Of these options, you will click on one called “Notifications”. Once you tap on the “Notifications” button, a new window will open. This is where you can control the notifications for the group chat on your phone. Turn off All “Messages” Notifications.
Step 4: Delete Chat
After completing the last step, you will now exit back out to the main page for the messaging app.
Tap and hold on to the group chat that you want to get rid of. Once you’ve selected the group chat, you’ll see an option will pop up that says “Delete” at the bottom. Tap on it if you want to delete the entire chat (for you). Doing this step will permanently delete the chat and you will not be able to access the texts ever again.
If you followed the steps above, you are now free from the clutches of the dreaded group chat. If you are still having problems trying to get out of a group chat, you can also always message the creator/admin of the group chat and directly request to leave. The Admin can “kick” anyone that they want to. Unfortunately, if you are using a separate app like WhatsApp or Teams, then the guide above will not work as this guide was for the built-in native messaging app for Android phones.
