How to Enable Dark Mode for YouTube on All Devices

There’s just something relaxing about watching YouTube videos with a darker theme. Dark mode cuts the harsh white light coming off of your screen, and it looks nicer too. Unlike some other platforms, YouTube offers dark mode on iOS, Android, and desktops. We’ll show you how to enable dark mode for YouTube and give you some helpful hints along the way.

What is YouTube Dark Mode and Why Use It

Dark mode has become increasingly popular over the last few years. More and more people take advantage of the feature, and app developers are happy to yield to the public’s desire for it. But what is YouTube’s dark mode, and should you use it? Before we dive into our tutorials, we wanted to give you some expert knowledge about it.

What is YouTube’s Dark Mode?

YouTube has two themes: a light theme and a dark theme. The light theme is the standard for iOS, Android, and web browsers. YouTube’s background is white, and the text is black. It’s incredibly bright and, when it gets late, can be rather overbearing.

YouTube’s dark mode theme changes all the white backgrounds to black. Of course, it also changes all the text to white. So, your menus, borders, libraries, and comments sections will all appear black with white text when you enable dark mode. YouTube’s dark mode theme will not affect your videos, but the comments section and borders will be darker.

The Pros and Cons of YouTube Dark Mode

One thing we rarely see discussed is whether dark mode is actually better. YouTube’s dark mode changes so much of the screen that it really saves your battery life on OLED devices (most devices these days). When the back-light dims, the device doesn’t have to use so much battery life to work. So, in this sense, dark mode is a great help.

However, not everyone benefits from dark mode. Those with eyesight issues like astigmatism may struggle to differentiate the white text on the black background. Others may experience excessive blurriness after a certain amount of time. Dark mode causes your eyes to dilate and, in doing so, may cause excessive strain.

In contrast, dark mode emits less harmful blue light than the lighter theme does. But ultimately, it boils down to the individual. If dark mode doesn’t bother you, use it often. If it does, switch between dark and light modes on YouTube as needed.
