Most people worldwide prefer to use PayPal to send money and buy stuff online. But sometimes, the purchase may go differently than planned. For instance, you may receive a broken or defective item.
PayPal understands that these issues may arise, so the company offers a dispute process and resolution center to protect buyers. Luckily, there are easy steps to follow to dispute a charge on PayPal.
PayPal allows you to negotiate with the seller when you dispute a charge. It withholds the funds in question while you resolve the issue with the merchant. If this does not work, you can file a claim, allowing PayPal to investigate and fix the problem.

Instances When You Can Dispute a Charge on PayPal
In the event an order goes awry, you may need to dispute a charge on PayPal. However, not all charges can be disputed. Here are some instances where PayPal allows you to dispute a charge:
- If you do not receive the item you purchased through PayPal
- If you bought an item through PayPal but received a different item
- If the PayPal payment was made without your consent or expressed authorization
- If the item you receive is broken
- If you received a fake or counterfeit item that you paid for through PayPal
PayPal Dispute Management is strict on how to dispute a charge on PayPal. As such, you can’t dispute a payment simply because you changed your mind about the purchase. According to PayPal Dispute Management, you can only dispute the purchase if your issue is based on one of these two scenarios:
- Item not received (INR): If you paid for an item but have not received it
- Significantly Not As Described (SNAD): When the item you get substantially differs from what was described by the seller. For instance, you paid for a blue iron box, but you get a silver iron box
If your issue deserves a dispute, you can file your claim within 180 days from the date of purchase and get your money back.

Here is the step-by-step guide on how to dispute a charge on Paypal.
Step 1: Log in to the official PayPal website
Search for “PayPal” on your Google browser. Click on the official PayPal website among the Google search page’s results, or click on the link here.
Once you click on it, the PayPal website will open up.
If your PayPal account is already logged in, it will open automatically. If not, you must press the Log In button below.
Once you press the Log in button, the details box shown below opens up. Here, you are required to fill in your details, including your PayPal email address or phone number and your password.
After filling out the details, click on Log In at the bottom. Your PayPal account will open instantly.
Step 2: Click on the Help menu
After opening your PayPal account, you will notice the tabs at the top of your screen, including Dashboard, Send and Request, Wallet, Activity, and Help.
Since you want to dispute a charge, click on the Help tab.
Step 3: Click on the Resolution Center
The page that opens up is an interface where users can get help regarding any PayPal transaction. Click the option Resolution Center on the furthest left.
Step 4: Select Report a Problem
The entry for the Resolution Center takes you to a page that shows all your cases. It is here that PayPal saves all your previous claims.
Since we want to create a new issue, you will click Report a Problem.
Step 5: Choose the Transaction ID you intend to dispute
PayPal will then direct you to a page showing all your PayPal transactions. Note that PayPal will only show transactions if you have them. If you have no previous transactions, it will appear blank.
You must choose the transaction ID of the purchase you intend to dispute. After this, press the option Continue.
Step 6: Select the Reasons for the Dispute
Now, you are taken to a page where you state the reason for the dispute. PayPal can only allow you to continue if your reason is among those listed. Once you’ve chosen, press the Continue button below the choices. Confirm that it appears as the one shown below.
Step 7: Negotiate with the seller
PayPal takes you to a message box where you can talk to the seller. The PayPal resolution center allows this message box as a way for both of you to agree on the issue at hand. These are the conditions on how to dispute a charge on PayPal.
The seller must respond within seven working days for unauthorized PayPal money transactions. For other cases, such as broken goods, they have up to 20 days to give their verdict or solution.
