The tvOS 9.0 for Apple TV came out in October 2015, making it possible for users to download apps. This new operating system brought a major upgrade to the Apple TV. Before this update, Apple TV users were stuck with pre-installed apps. After this update, users download over 20,000 unique apps to their Apple TV. Naturally, this brought the ability to delete apps too. But how do you delete apps on Apple TV? Keep reading to learn more.
Why Delete Apps On Apple TV?
You’re probably eager to quickly jump into the steps and delete apps on Apple TV. But first, let’s look at some good reasons to delete apps in the first place. Maybe you want to organize your home page or get rid of apps you no longer use. Or, perhaps, you want to remove apps to declutter your TV. Any one of these reasons is perfectly valid. Let’s elaborate on each one below before we walk through the steps below.
More apps on your Apple TV means a messier home screen. Thankfully, tvOS can sort apps into folders like on an iPhone or iPad screen. Deleting apps is a useful organizational tool, as well. You can use this delete feature to clean up your screen and declutter your interface for better, more convenient streaming. Not to mention, deleting apps frees up space for more apps!
Apple TV has a range of downloadable streaming service apps. These streamers include free trials and in-app purchases, making subscribing to their services even easier. However, not everybody wants to keep those apps around after the trial ends. If that’s your case, you can delete the app altogether. Otherwise, that app for the expired subscription will sit there unused.
App No Longer Needed
Deleting an app for organizational needs or expired subscription services is good. But it’s perfectly normal to delete an app that’s no longer useful or serving its purpose. It’s possible the app didn’t work as advertised or isn’t what you expected. Ultimately, this reason is just as justifiable as the other two above. Any one is a perfectly good enough reason to delete apps on Apple TV.

How To Delete Apps On Apple TV
Deleting Apps on Apple TV isn’t difficult if you know what to do. We’ll walk you through these steps in a moment. We’re using a first-generation Apple TV 4K for our demonstration. These steps should work from the fourth-generation Apple TV HD to the third-generation Apple TV 4K. However, it may not work for Apple TVs, which came out before Apple TV 4K.
Step One: Hover Over the App
Firstly, find the app you want to delete. Navigate around your Apple TV home screen using the Siri Remote. Once you’ve found the app you’re trying to remove, don’t hit Select. This will open up the app, which is not what we’re trying to do. Instead, proceed to the next step.
Step Two: Hold Down Select
Once you’ve found the app you wish to delete, hold down the Select button on your Siri Remote. Depending on your Siri Remote, this Select button will look slightly different from generation to generation. In general, though, it will always be located in the middle of the directional pad. Hold down for a few seconds, and the app should shake.
Step Three: Delete the App
Lastly, press the Play/Pause button on the Siri Remote with the app still shaking. This will present you with three options: “Delete,” “New Folder,” and “Cancel.” By default, the “Delete” button is highlighted in red. Select “Delete,” then follow any on-screen prompts that follow. After that, the app will officially be deleted.
That’s all there is to deleting apps on Apple TV! You can always re-download the app from the App Store as long as it’s available. And if you’d like a video walkthrough, we recommend the one below:
