Perhaps you’ve seen crossed out text on Discord. In the days of old, crossing out text was used to indicate an error in typing (we’re talking typewriters old). Today, we still use it to make corrections or to indicate some text is an opinion or draw attention to it. However, not everyone knows how to cross out text on Discord. Fortunately, we’re about to show you how to do it!

The sections below include a little something for everyone. Whether you prefer to use markdown or the highlight and select method, we’ll show you how to cross out text on Discord using both the desktop and the mobile app.

Things to Know About Crossed Out Text on Discord

There’s a time and a place for everything, and you definitely don’t want to be that guy who overuses the strikethrough function on a Discord server. If you’re confident you understand Discord etiquette, scroll down to our tutorials below. But for our readers who aren’t exactly sure when and how to use strikethrough (crossed out text), hang out with us for a bit while we teach you all about it.

When to Cross Out Text on Discord

As mentioned above, strikethrough goes way back and was used to indicate an error in typing. However, today we can delete our Discord chats, so what purpose does crossing out text serve?

Well, for starters, you could use strikethrough to highlight someone else’s statement as inaccurate by copying and pasting and then adding the tilde keys (shown below). You can also cross out the text to indicate you were going to say something and changed your mind. Lastly, you can cross out text in a Discord chat to show that you’ve changed your mind about a statement or didn’t mean to type it in the first place.

Understanding Discord Text Functions

Discord offers a variety of functions to make your text stand out or make it more interesting. Fortunately, the developers implemented several ways to activate the functions as well. One of the more common ways to cross out text on Discord is by using markdown (as shown in the first tutorial below).

Markdown text on Discord is really easy because your hands never have to leave the keyboard. You can type a series of symbols and letters to achieve a particular look (strikethrough, italicize, change text color, etc.).

Of course, you can also use the in-chat menu to cross out text too. Discord even offers these functions on the mobile app. So, whether you prefer to use the mouse, or stick to your keyboard, there’s a helpful option for you below!

Before we dive into the step-by-step guide then why not take a quick look at the video below which shows both methods in action.
