There’s plenty to love about PlayStation Plus with three tiers. Premium, Extra, and Essential each have unique benefits and price points. However, not everyone sticks to PlayStation forever. With the Xbox, the Nintendo Switch, and PC gaming all nearly as popular as the PlayStation, it’s not out of the ordinary for a person to need to cancel their PlayStation Plus membership. Below we show you how to cancel PlayStation Plus memberships across all tiers, complete with photos to help clarify things.
Why Keep PlayStation Plus?
Before you cancel, you might want to consider the reasons to keep or downgrade your PlayStation Plus membership instead of outright canceling. Even at its cheapest tier, Essential, PlayStation Plus allows PlayStation gamers to play multiplayer online with friends and strangers alike. Without PlayStation Plus, you cannot enjoy online gameplay with your PlayStation. Additionally, all PlayStation Plus tiers give members free games for their PlayStation collection every month. All tiers can also enjoy exclusive PlayStation Store deals.
An Extra PlayStation Plus membership adds even more benefits. With this, PlayStation gamers get access to Game Catalog: A free collection of hundreds of games ranging from indie to blockbuster. Extra members can also enjoy access to the Ubisoft+ Classics collection and everything from the Essential membership. Premium members get the most perks, including free and exclusive game trials, the ability to stream to the cloud, and even the free Classics Catalog: PlayStation favorites from across the family of console.
If you’re a PlayStation player looking to learn how to cancel PlayStation Plus, you might want to reconsider what you’ll be losing. Firstly, the ability to play online with friends and fellow gamers is an absolute must-have in this day and age. You can’t get online without a PlayStation Plus membership and enjoy this multiplayer functionality. Instead of canceling, it might be worth simply downgrading your membership to the Essential tier. This way, you can still play online at a lower cost. If you’re already an Essential member but pay by the month, consider paying annually to save $60 a year.
How to Cancel PlayStation Plus (With Photos)
If you’re still set on canceling your PlayStation Plus membership, here are the steps you’ll need to take. Remember that you can always re-subscribe to PlayStation Plus if possible. You can also downgrade your membership tier, as discussed above.
Step One: Sign Into Account Management
Go to Account Management and sign in to your Sony PlayStation account. Enter your sign-in ID or email address into the text box and click Next. (While this will undoubtedly work on mobile, it might be easier for you to do these steps on a desktop or laptop computer.)
On the next screen, enter your password and click Next again. You’ll get a code sent to your preferred delivery method if you have two-factor authentication enabled. Retrieve the code and enter it in the appropriate text box. Then, click Verify. After this, you should be in.
Step Two: Select Subscription
On the menu on the left-hand side of the screen, you should see a list of different options and settings. Your Information, Security… these Account settings don’t matter here. What we’re looking for is under the PlayStation Network subheading.
Scroll down the side menu until you see the section labeled Subscription. On this desktop screen, it’s second-to-last before reaching the Other Settings subsection. Click on Subscription — the one with the icon of a credit card with a cycle symbol in the top right-hand corner of the card.
At this point, a box will pop up that says, “You will go to another page.” You can click Cancel or Continue. Here, you’ll want to click Continue.
Step Three: Cancel Subscription
From there, you’ll be taken to the Official PlayStation Store. After the page loads, a menu should appear on the right-hand side of the screen. This menu will display your current PlayStation Plus membership. All you have to do is click Cancel Subscription.
Once that’s done, you’ll see the PlayStation Plus membership you previously held. Instead of displaying your membership type, the PlayStation Store now gives you the handy option to re-subscribe. Unless you’ve changed your mind, you can now exit the page. You’re all set.
The above steps should guide you through the process of cancelling your PlayStation Plus subscription. However, if you’d prefer a video guide to cancelling, we’ve found the perfect tutorial on YouTube to be your guide.
Bonus: How to Cancel PlayStation Plus on Your Console
You can also do that if you’d prefer to cancel your PlayStation Plus membership from your console instead of a computer. This might be easier for those who don’t have a computer handy (or those who initially signed up for a PlayStation Plus membership from their console to begin with).
Cancel PlayStation Plus from Your PlayStation 4
- Navigate to the PlayStation Plus icon on your PS4 home screen.
- Select Manage Membership, then select Subscription.
- Then, select Cancel Subscription.
Cancel PlayStation Plus from Your PlayStation 5
- Navigate to the Settings icon on your PS5.
- Scroll down to Users and Accounts and select Account.
- From there, navigate to Payment and Subscriptions.
- Select Subscriptions and then PlayStation Plus.
You’ll now be given the option to cancel your subscription from here.
