Blocking someone on Twitch is easy, and there’s no shame in using the feature liberally. Your Twitch streams should be a place of solace for like-minded individuals who want to enjoy some content together without drama.
It’s no secret that sometimes we meet the bottom of the internet barrel — people who just want to troll or harass us. Other times, we have to block someone to avoid getting banned, which is often the case with Twitch. Regardless of your reasons for wanting to block someone, we’ll teach you how to do it in the following sections.
How to Block Someone on the Twitch Mobile App
If you’re streaming on Twitch, sometimes it’s easier to curate your followers from your mobile device. You can keep your game, Twitch, and OBS running on your screen while you block someone on the mobile app.
If you have the Twitch mobile app, follow these steps to block someone:
Step 1: Search for the User
Naturally, we’ll need to find the offensive user before we can block them. Launch the Twitch app on your mobile device and sign into your account if you haven’t already.
Then, tap the Magnifying glass icon in the bottom right. Type the offender’s username, and hit enter on your keyboard.
Step 2: Tap the Menu Icon
The offending person’s profile will appear on your screen. You’ll see a menu icon in the top right corner of the screen. Tap that.
Step 3: Tap the Block Option
Finally, you’ll see the Block [Username] option. Tap that and confirm that you no longer want to interact with this individual.
Note: The buttons may appear different for Android users than for iOS users, which we used in the screenshots, but the instructions are the same.
How to Block Someone on Twitch in the Chat
If you prefer to use Twitch.tv, you can block users in the chat box. Fortunately, this is super easy and effective. The only thing you’ll need is the offender’s Twitch username and a simple command. Here’s what to do:
Step 1: Click the Chat Box
Click inside the chat box on the far right side of your screen.
Step 2: Type /Block
To start the blocking command, simply type /block. The /block Username box will appear just above the chat box. Click that.
Step 3: Type the Username
Finally, input the misbehaving individual’s username and click enter on your keyboard. Now, the user is gone. They can’t bother you anymore, so it’s time to return to having fun with your friends and enjoying the stream.
How to Block Someone on Twitch Using ModView
If you’re fortunate to have had the title Twitch Mod bestowed upon you, ModView is a must! While the instructions for blocking someone on ModView are the same for everyone else on Twitch, it’s also a good idea to learn how to block on that website.
ModView allows you to block users, even if they have blocked you, and moderate other aspects of the channel. If you’re a mod or streamer, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open ModView
First, launch ModView and log into your Twitch account. Then, select the channel you want to moderate. If you are already in a channel you moderate, you can also click on the sword icon at the bottom right of the chat panel.
Step 2: Type /Block
Like the steps above, click inside the chat box and type /block. A pop-up will appear just above the text. Click that pop-up.
Step 3: Type the Username
Finally, tap the offending person’s username. Then, hit enter on your keyboard to submit the command. Now, the individual is blocked.
How to Block Someone on Twitch on a Channel You Don’t Moderate
Sometimes, annoying people infiltrate chats, and the channel’s moderators aren’t doing anything. If you find yourself in that situation, you can still block people in others’ chats. Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Click the Name
First, click the user’s name in the chatbox.
Step 2: Click the Three-Dot Icon
A small menu will appear. Click the three-dot icon in the chat window.
Step 3: Select Block [Username]
Finally, click the option to block that user.
How to Block Words on Twitch
Perhaps you don’t want to block your Twitch viewers, but you still want to keep your chat clean. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to moderate your Twitch channel, and one of those ways is to block terms. If someone types something you don’t like, Twitch will automatically block it from going through in the chat.
Here’s how to block words on Twitch:
Step 1: Go to ModView
Similar to the steps above, go to the Twitch ModView page or click on the sword icon in the chat panel.
Note: You can only block terms on Twitch if you’re a moderator or content creator.
Step 2: Click Blocked Terms
Next, click Blocked Terms in the right corner.
Step 3: Input Terms
Now, input the terms you want to block on your Twitch channel. Whenever someone tries to use one of your blocked terms, Twitch will suppress it without blocking the person.
All About Blocking Someone on Twitch
Nearly every social media and communications platform has a blocking feature. As a matter of fact, it’s a required feature for apps supported in Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store — the ability to control who can interact with you and who can see you.
Twitch is no different from most other platforms, except you get a few extra moderation options. Blocking someone on Twitch can be done using several methods. From using commands to ModView, you should have no trouble keeping troublesome people out of your sacred online space.
When you block someone on Twitch, they can’t send you Whispers or comment in your chats. They also can’t see your live streams. If you block another Twitch user on someone else’s channel, you won’t see their messages, and they won’t see yours.
Hopefully, you won’t need to use this feature often. However, it definitely comes in handy when someone is bothering, harassing, or disrespecting you. Fortunately, it doesn’t take much to block people, and it’s an effective way to make your Twitch experience more enjoyable.
