My Job Is Reviewing Tech, Here Is My Honest Opinion on the Fire TV Soundbar

Key Points

  • The Fire TV Soundbar is a budget-friendly option for anyone who wants better sound than their television delivers, frequently available for under $100.
  • A compact design with the Fire TV Soundbar allows it to fit under any size television, whether hung or in an entertainment center.
  • The Fire TV Soundbar delivers impressive bass and improved dialog quality, making it a great addition to any home.
  • Even with its low price, the Fire TV soundbar can compete with higher-priced alternatives with 40W of power being delivered between two speakers.

In the world of Amazon making its own products across various electronic verticals, a soundbar felt like an inevitability. Released to the world on September 20, 2023, the Fire TV Soundbar is a budget-friendly option for anyone who wants better sound than their television delivers. Frequently available for under $100, the Fire TV soundbar is undoubtedly one of the least expensive options on the market.

The real question here is whether a $100 soundbar from Amazon can deliver good sound, never mind great sound. I am by no means an audio snob, but I do appreciate a great soundbar.

With this last thought in mind, let’s jump right into my thoughts on the Amazon Fire TV soundbar and see if I can help you determine whether this might be your next Amazon purchase.

What’s Special About the Fire TV Soundbar?

Pricing

With few exceptions, pricing is one of the biggest factors as to why anyone looks at Amazon-branded products. This is true whether it’s a backpack or part of their Fire TV lineup. In the case of the Fire TV soundbar, even at its full $119 retail price, I have very little to complain about price-wise.

Things get even less complicated price-wise when you consider that Amazon regularly discounts the soundbar down to $99. This usually occurs around the holidays and Prime Deal days, but also during random times throughout the year.

On sale or not, I’ll emphasize again that we have very little to complain about when it comes to price. Finding any soundbar for around $100 isn’t easy, never mind one that comes with some of the Fire TV benefits. Between Dolby Audio, Fire TV connectivity, and a plug-and-play design, it’s hard to ignore.

Design

Right away it’s easy to notice the most important aspect of the Fire TV soundbar’s design. At only 24 x 3.5 x 2.5 inches in size, it’s very compact. Although many soundbars tend to be at least 10 inches longer, the Fire TV soundbar’s size is highly regarded for being able to fit under any size television. On the other hand, it’s not surprising that a smaller form factor does limit the amount of speakers that fit inside.

Speaker counts aside, the black mesh grille covering the speaker placement is fairly typical and doesn’t look out of the ordinary. The same goes for the 5 control buttons that are on top of the soundbar. Using these buttons, you have the ability to select different inputs, adjust volume, pair with Bluetooth devices, and turn the soundbar on or off.

As is the case with many Amazon devices, branding wasn’t immediately noticeable and I think the overall look is mostly minimal. I wouldn’t go as far as saying the look of the Fire TV soundbar is dull as I tend to like hardware that easily disappears into the background. When you have products like Sonos that try to grab all the attention, I like the appeal of a soundbar that doesn’t put too much emphasis on standing out.

One of the best aspects of the Fire TV soundbar is how well it fits underneath any size television.

Audio Quality

It’s understandable that in the case of the Fire TV soundbar’s price, audio quality questions linger.

Bass and Dialog

When you or I buy a soundbar, we’re doing so with the understanding that our television speakers can be better. As soon as you connect the Fire TV to a television, by all accounts it delivers impressive bass for its size. Along with bass, the Fire TV soundbar can dramatically improve dialog quality. This is one of the biggest reasons I like having any soundbar installed.

There are too many times I just can’t hear what someone says without cranking up the television volume. A soundbar’s ability to deliver crisper dialog solves my volume troubles. In this case, the Fire TV soundbar is an easy addition to your home.

DTS:X

Unsurprisingly, you can’t have the same expectations for the Fire TV soundbar as the Bose Smart Soundbar 900. Considering the price difference, I think we’re all aligned on this front. This said, I can tell having DTS:X technology will ensure the Fire TV works hard to deliver a booming sound. It’s doubtful DTS:X tech will knock your socks off with volume, but it will make sure the Fire TV soundbar can compete with some higher-priced alternatives.

Volume

What will surprise you about the Fire TV soundbar is how loud it can get. Delivering 40W of power between two speakers, Amazon is set to underpromise and over-deliver. There is no reason to think this speaker can’t completely fill up a small size room and some medium-sized rooms.

Setup

One thing that comes as no surprise is how easy it is to set up this soundbar. Amazon has been really great over recent years at simplifying the setup across all of its electronics. All you need to do is plug the soundbar into a power outlet and an open HDMI port on a television. You can also use the optical digital output, but HDMI delivers better sound so it’s the preferred connection method.

Using the included remote is super simple and you can connect your television remote just as easily to control volume. If you want to make any adjustments to bass, surround sound, or EQ modes, it’s all done on the included remote. All in all, I’m confident the Fire TV soundbar is very easy to configure.

Does the Fire TV Soundbar Actually Work?

Any question about how well the Fire TV soundbar works is really a question of expectations. If you come in expecting similar audio quality as a soundbar that costs 5 times as much, you will be disappointed. On the other hand, if you come in like I would and expect to hear better sound than my television can deliver, you’ll come away happy.

Unsurprisingly, the biggest competitor to the Fire TV soundbar is the Roku Streambar. As a similarly-priced soundbar with the same level of smarts, it’s a definite wrestling match for the best budget-friendly soundbar.

Like the Fire TV option, not only does the Roku Streambar add greater sound but also adds the Roku interface to any television. This is also how the Fire TV soundbar works as it adds Fire OS to any television it’s connected to. Whether you like Fire OS or Roku is definitely subjective, but it’s a great feature to have all the same.

Similar to Amazon, the Roku also lacks Dolby Atmos, which helps them stay on an equal playing field. What I would say is the Fire TV likely offers more bass while the Roku Streambar has better dialog clarity.

Where I Would Improve the Fire TV Soundbar

I think in my case, the biggest thing I would add to the Fire TV soundbar is Dolby Atmos. Having the center up-firing speaker really helps create an immersive audio experience. This is going to come in handy when you’re watching movies but TV shows will also benefit as well. I’m not someone who is really concerned about a separate subwoofer, but adding a subwoofer to the Fire TV soundbar would be welcomed.

Of course, there is a problem with my recommendation as soundbars like this already exist. There are numerous models with center-up-firing speakers for Dolby Atmos and built-in subwoofers. Now, if Amazon can add these features and keep its pricing structure intact, this soundbar would fly off digital shelves.

Is the Fire TV Soundbar Worth It?

Any question about the Fire TV soundbar being worth it really comes down to what you want most. If you want to save as much as possible but have better sound than your television can deliver, the Fire TV soundbar is worth purchasing. On the other hand, you can spend twice as much and pick up an option like the Samsung HW-S60B. For double the price, you get a soundbar that is the exact same length but offers much-improved sound.

I haven’t really talked about voice assistance, which is unsurprisingly included with Amazon Alexa. As expected, Amazon Alexa will be a joy to use and deliver on all of its promises around voice commands. Whether it’s asking about the news, changing a channel, or adjusting the volume, Alexa is going to be a great experience.

For an audience looking to keep costs down, the Fire TV soundbar is a great idea. Anyone who wants something with a little more power and can increase their budget will have far more options to choose from.
