You’ve probably at least heard of DeWalt before, as they are a major manufacturer of power tools. However, you may not be as familiar with Hart, which is a long-time manufacturer of hammers that is now an exclusive Walmart brand.
If you’ve been to Walmart in recent years, you may have noticed a new line of tools filling the aisles. Hart tools are made by TTI, which also makes RYOBI and Ridgid. Power is a major concern when purchasing an electric mower, but you’ll be surprised to find out that these two are actually pretty comparable. However, the construction is a bit different, with slight variations that you may want to consider.

Hart 40V Cordless Mower vs. DeWalt 20V Max Mower: What’s the Difference?
Both mowers come in comparable sizes and deliver more than enough performance to get your grass cut. But today, we’re going to take a deep dive into all of the many differences between these two mowers and which one you should purchase. So let’s take a look but the models that are offered and then what kind of power they deliver in addition to deck size, pricing, and warranties.
Models
Hart and DeWalt both make a number of different mowers in their respective battery lines. However, to keep things simple, we’ll be looking at a specific mower in each. The two mowers we’ve selected are very comparable in both size and price. Just keep in mind that you can also purchase mowers without extra batteries if you don’t need them.
In the DeWalt line, we will be looking at the DCMWSP244, which is a 21.5-inch mower that runs on two 20 volt batteries. Moving on to the Hart, we will be looking at the HLPM061US, which also comes with two 40 volt batteries. The deck on the Hart is also comparably sized at 21 inches. Both mowers also include the proper chargers; however, DeWalt provides two, so you can charge both batteries at the same time.
Power
Power is a concern for many people because they fear that electric mowers are not up to the job. But both the DeWalt and the Hart are more than capable of cutting your yard and standing up to the rigors of tall grass. With that in mind, you may be thinking that the DeWalt is grossly underpowered, using only 20 Volt batteries.
However, the DeWalt is unique because it uses both batteries at the same time to create 40 volts of power that are sent to the motor. This is different than other mowers like the Hart, which hold two batteries but do not combine their power. The downside to this is that you do need both batteries in the DeWalt, whereas you only need one in the Hart.
Because of the way that DeWalt combines power from two batteries, you should notice comparable power between the two mowers. Additionally, both mowers use a brushless motor that will provide many years of trouble-free operation. A separate small motor is used for the self-propelled mechanisms, which is found on the front wheels of the DeWalt and the rear wheels of the Hart.
Moving onto batteries, the DeWalt comes with 2-20V 10ah batteries that, when used together, provide 60 minutes of runtime. The Hart includes 2-40V 6ah batteries that they say will cut up to 3/4 acre. Based on comparably sized batteries on other mowers, we estimate that the Hart will also cut for about 60 minutes with both batteries.
Deck
The decks between the Hart and DeWalt mowers are also quite different. However, you shouldn’t let deck design be the only thing influencing your purchase decision. One similarity is that both mowers use a single steel blade that is easily replaceable. But where these two mowers greatly differ is in the material that the deck shell is made out of.
The DeWalt 20V is one of the few electric mowers to feature a full steel deck. Meanwhile, the Hart has a composite deck that is strong enough to take the abuse of cutting grass and will not succumb to rust. The size of the two mowers is nearly identical, with the Hart having a 21-inch deck and the DeWalt having a slightly larger 21.5-inch deck.
Accessories
Both mowers come with nearly identical accessories, so there’s not much to consider here. DeWalt and Hart both include a discharge chute, a clippings bag, and a mulching kit. This prevents you from later having to purchase these items separately. Additionally, both mowers come with chargers, but the DeWalt does come with two, so you can charge both batteries at once.
Ease of Use
Electric mowers are remarkably easy to use, and nearly anybody can operate one. The greatest benefit of an electric mower is not having to deal with gas as well as not needing to perform as much maintenance. Both the DeWalt and the Hart operate like nearly every other electric mower, which simply requires you to insert the battery, press the start button, and pull back the mowing lever.
All the controls are very intuitive, so you’ll learn them quickly. Both mowers are self-propelled, and you can easily control the speed with a single lever. One minor addition to the Hart is that it does have an LED light, so you can cut at night. Besides that, both mowers also feature an adjustable lever that controls the height of all four wheels at once.
Pricing
If you’ve looked at lower prices lately, you may have noticed that electric ones tend to be more expensive than gas-powered ones. This is primarily due to the fact that the batteries are very expensive. In addition to the mower models we’ve mentioned here, there are also other bundles that you can choose that have different-sized batteries or even no batteries included.
The DeWalt 20V Max has an MSRP of $699. With it, you get two 10ah batteries as well as two chargers. The Hart 40V has an MSRP of $598, and it too comes with two batteries which are both 6ah. While these two prices may be both pretty high, you can usually find them on sale. Additionally, these are on the high end of pricing for electric mowers, so you may want to consider other brands like Ego or Kobalt.
Warranty
One word of advice is that you should never overlook warranties, especially on power tools like this. While electric mowers have been around for a while now, and DeWalt and Hart are both proven, failures still happen. Therefore you should carefully consider the warranties as well as what each cover in regard to the tool and the battery.
The DeWalt mower warranty is comparable to the ones on DeWalt’s other power tools. You get a 3-year warranty on both the mower, the batteries, and the chargers. This is shorter than many competitors, including Hart, which offers a 5-year warranty on the mower and a 3-year warranty on batteries. Battery warranties are typically shorter than the tools; however, three years on a mower does not seem sufficient.
Battery Lines
When buying an electric mower, you need to think about it as buying into a battery line. Even if you initially just need a lawnmower now, the day will likely come when you will need a weedeater or blower. Having already purchased a mower with batteries means that those purchases will be significantly cheaper because you won’t need to purchase batteries again.
DeWalt is known for having an extensive product line, and their 20V line has nearly any power tool you could want. If you plan to purchase anything from drills to saws in the future, then purchasing the DeWalt 20V mower will be well worth the cost. With that said, don’t overlook Hart, as they have a growing line of outdoor power equipment that uses the 40V battery. However, you won’t find smaller hand power tools.

The Hart and DeWalt mowers are both excellent choices that you will be very pleased with. However, we do have to choose a winner. Many factors between the two mowers are exactly the same, which can make the purchasing decision difficult. But you must ultimately look at what matters most for you. For example, price, batteries, and power affect everyone’s decisions differently.
However, for our comparison, we feel the DeWalt is the better mower. The power in both mowers is pretty equal, and they each come with the same accessories. However, the extra battery charger with the DeWalt is a nice addition. More importantly, the steel deck is also a nice upgrade as it is something that other mower manufacturers charge a lot more for.
One thing that you will like or dislike about the DeWalt is that it has front-wheel drive like most gas-powered mowers. We feel that this makes it easier to turn, but that could be from simply being used to traditional gas mowers. With all that said, we still haven’t gotten to our number one reason that we like the DeWalt better, and that is the batteries.
The massive 20-volt 10ah batteries are great if you already have DeWalt power tools or if you may purchase them in the future. With all that said, there is nothing wrong with the Hart 40V, and in fact, there are several things that are better. For instance, the price of the Hart is lower, but more importantly, the 5-year warranty on the Hart is a major upgrade over DeWalt’s.
