Comparing the Apple Watch against a smartwatch from Samsung or Fitbit is simple, but things are trickier when exploring devices that run Wear OS. While skins change the UI, some interesting differences between the Google Pixel Watch vs. Galaxy Watch5 exist, despite one wearable being a year newer.

Style and Design
Sizing can be an issue with smartwatches, especially if you have smaller wrists. That’s why many smartwatch manufacturers release wearables in multiple sizes, but Google didn’t get the memo. The Pixel watch is only available in one size at 41mm, compared to the Galaxy Watch4, which comes in 40mm or 44mm.
Galaxy Watch4 is lighter on the wrist but comes in several different colors. Samsung’s watch has an aluminum digital bezel, while the Pixel Watch has a more pebble-like design that’s all curves. Water-resistance resistance is better on Google’s watch at ATM 10 compared to ATM 5 on the Watch4.
Samsung and Google’s watches have distinctly different designs, which should appeal to many consumers. Either could be worn casually without drawing any stares with the right watch band, but the Pixel Watch is a bit more “watch-like” with a digital crown like the Apple Watch Series 8.
You don’t need a high-end GPU or 6GB memory on a smartwatch. You need enough power to keep applications running smoothly, and a solid processor can also help conserve battery life. Google released the Pixel watch a little over a year after the Galaxy Watch4, but they went with an older processor for some reason.
The Google Pixel Watch is powered by the Exynos 9110; a dual-core 10nm processor clocked at 1.15Ghz. It’s backed by 2GB of RAM, which is more than you’ll get from Apple and other manufacturers. That includes Samsung, which only included 1.5GB of RAM on the Watch4. However, it has a newer processor with the 5nm dual-core 1.18GHz Exynos W920.
Another significant difference under the hood comes into play with storage space. There is 16GB of built-in storage on the Galaxy Watch4, while the Pixel Watch provides double at 32GB. That’s noteworthy depending on how you plan to use the smartwatch, especially with apps that utilize these wearable’s fitness tracking capabilities.
When Google bought Fitbit in 2021, we expected the company’s tech to find its way into Google’s products. That happened with the release of the Pixel Watch, which puts Fitbit’s technology on full display thanks to an array of sensors.
The Pixel Watch allows users to track their heart rate or blood oxygen levels through a SpO2 sensor. It can take ECG readings, and everything is tied to a suite of Fitbit apps for tracking. That means you can look forward to dozens of metrics, although you won’t get one on the Pixel that Samsung included on the Watch4.
Samsung used their new BioActive sensor array on the Watch4, which measures the same metrics as the Pixel Watch. It can also take your BMI, which gives you an idea of your body fat percentage. Samsung is also working on blood pressure tracking, something the Google Pixel Watch lacks. While both watches can track the same vital metrics, Samsung’s sensors can do a bit more, giving them the edge.
Battery Life and Charging Times
Producing a smartwatch that can truly provide “all day” battery life can be difficult when you factor in always-on displays and apps that run in the background. Smartphone manufacturers have made great strides in these areas in recent years.
Samsung and Google claim their watches will get users through an entire day. The Pixel Watch has a 294mAh battery but an older processor. Most users put the battery life around the 15-17 hour mark, compared to Google’s 24 hours. That’s par for the course with the display and apps, but Samsung used a larger 361mAh battery in their watch.
While the Watch4 doesn’t live up to the company’s claim of 40-hour battery life, most people should get a total 24 hours before recharge. That’s with the always-on display active under normal usage so that you could get 30 hours with a few adjustments.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch4 and Google Pixel Watch will get you through a regular 8-hour workday with plenty of time to spare. Samsung’s watch has better battery life, power share, and Qi wireless charging. Google’s smartwatch does not officially support wireless charging or reverse charging.

Google’s first smartwatch hasn’t been on the market for long, so we haven’t seen a deep discount on pricing. While it’s only available in one size, you can choose from two price points. The Bluetooth/Wi-Fi Pixel Watch is priced at $299, while the 4G LTE variant is $349. Pricing is competitive against devices like the Apple Watch Series 8, but how does it stack up against the older Watch4?
The Samsung Galaxy Watch4 is available for $169 for the 40mm edition, while 4G is an extra $30. It’s almost half the price of the Pixel Watch despite only being a year older. You may have trouble finding certain styles with the Watch4, although both devices are still sold through each company’s official storefronts.

Samsung’s Watch4 also received favorable marks from users and reviewers but is significantly cheaper than Google’s smartwatch. Samsung has an advantage with health monitoring sensors, but the Pixel watch provides more internal storage and RAM. Battery life is better on the Galaxy Watch4, and both run the same OS with similar features at their core.
The Watch4 is a great way to test the waters with an Android-based smartwatch with its affordable price tag and a full range of features. The Pixel Watch is pricier and newer but still rough around the edges in a few areas as a first-gen smartwatch for Google.
Google Pixel Watch and Galaxy Watch4: Technology Updates
Since February 2023, there have been no major technology updates for the Google Pixel Watch or the Galaxy Watch4. Both have received regular monthly security patches, but no new features or significant bug fixes.
The Google Pixel Watch is still awaiting the launch of fall detection, which was initially planned for early 2023, with no update on its release.
Samsung has released a few new watch faces and apps for the Galaxy Watch4, but no major updates have been introduced since February.

In the next six to 18 months, users can expect several technology updates for the Google Pixel Watch and the Galaxy Watch4:
