Google Pixel 7 Pro vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: What’s the Difference?

Design

If you’re looking for a phone that stands out among the rest, the Pixel 7 Pro’s design is sleek and bold. Google’s flagship smartphone features elegant, rounded edges and a shiny, metal camera bar that present’s the device’s three updated cameras.

While some users find the design a little too polished, to the point where it slips out of their hands, there’s no denying how gorgeous this phone looks. Especially in its three color choices: hazel, snow, and obsidian.

Now, there’s no denying that the Pixel 7 Pro is hefty; measuring 162.9 x 76.6 x 8.9mm, it’s the largest Google phone to date. And at 212g, there’s no missing this device in your pocket.

That’s just the direction that flagship smartphones are going these days. Compared to the other major sellers, such as the iPhone 14 Pro and the Samsung S22, it’s on the lighter side. Speaking of Apple’s newest handheld, the iPhone 14 Pro Max comes with an eye-candy design of its own.

While iOS enthusiasts won’t notice much of a change from previous models, this year’s smartphone features a crisp, hard frame and a larger camera block to support its new, main camera. Apple’s latest device also comes in four colors, including the new Deep Purple.

If you thought the Pixel 7 Pro was large, wait until you get your hands on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Measuring nearly the same size but weighing 30g more, this is the biggest handheld on the market, ever.

It’s so big that some people might choose another option just to hold it easier. But with its size come some of the most advanced features we’ve seen, and for the most part, they’re worth it.

Display

As far as its screen display goes, Google opted to focus on its new ARM processor over improving the screen. That’s not to say they forgot it altogether. Compared to last year’s device, which was rebuilt from the ground up, the Pixel 7 Pro features a much brighter display. At nearly 1,000 nits, it’s easy enough to see the screen on a bright day outside.

We like Google’s Alway’s-On display for its simplicity. While its dim lock screen can only drop to 10Hz, it doesn’t overwhelm us with information and widgets. Apple included this feature for the first time with the iPhone 14 family. But, in some cases, it can be a little much.

Their Always-On display can drop down to just 1Hz, but it includes a dim version of your background as well as a clock, all your widgets, and even your notifications. It just seems a little overkill.

It’s just one display aspect that Apple includes in trying to revolutionize its device. Even more significant is the smartphone’s new Dynamic Island, which moves beyond traditional notches to provide information. The display feature expands from the front speaker and camera as a long oval to provide alerts, activities, and other active controls.

However, one area where the iPhone 14 Pro Max continues to dominate is display brightness. With an HD display, the screen can reach up to 1,600 nits. And in direct sunlight, the phone touches 2,000 nits (according to Apple). With double the brightness of the Pixel 7 Pro, users will have no issues using their phone anywhere they go.

Performance

Just last year, Google decided to build its processor from scratch. The company’s in-house team created the first rendition of the Tensor, which builds right into the circuitry of the phone to increase performance and reduce the power requirement.

It’s still brand new, but the Pixel 7 Pro’s Tensor G2 comes close to matching the likes of Samsung’s ARM processor. However, it’s got a lot of developing to do if it wants to meet Apple’s long line of smartphone processing.

Just as the Pixel 7 Pro introduces the newest rendition of Google’s first ARM, the iPhone 14 Pro Max features an updated A16 Bionic, which is an utter beast when considering performance. With years of development, this processor can run nearly twice the pace as any of the competition. For the time being, Apple dominates this arena.

Still, you’ll find hardly any issues with even the most demanding apps using either of these smartphones. With 128GB of RAM, both of these devices can handle heavy downloads, hours of high-quality streaming, and intense sessions of gaming with ease.

Camera

The iPhone 14 Pro Max weighs 8.47 ounces (240 grams).

Where the Pixel 7 Pro is still finding its footing with a new ARM processor, it’s making a name for itself as having the best camera for an Android device. Google’s flagship phone comes with three rear cameras, which include a massive, 50MP main sensor, a 12MP ultrawide sensor, and a 48MP telephoto lens. The Pixel 7 Pro also features a nice 10.8MP selfie camera.

We really love this smartphone’s zoom capabilities, which reach 5X without loss of clarity. However, Google also beefs up its photo game with AI learning, which is exclusive to the Tensor G2.

The Pixel 7 Pro offers some of the best Real Tone improvements, which adjust to capture darker skin tones better. It also has a special Photo Unblur tool, which can fix shaky images automatically.

Still, how do you compete with a device that’s historically led the photo race? The iPhone 14 Pro Max comes out with updated tools of its own, putting up a good fight.

This smartphone features a brand new 48MP main camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 12MP telephoto lens with 3X zoom. It also has a special 12MP front-facing camera that features Auto Focus for the crispest selfies you’ve ever seen.

Apple’s flagship device has tricks of its own. The 48MP camera uses its entire range when shooting and compiles that information into 12MP, which results in images with the finest details in the industry. The camera also features Action mode, which records 4K videos and cuts them down to 2.8K, smoothing out any jitters or bounces.

Battery Life

Unfortunately for Google, their new ARM processor is just too new to see real battery-saving improvements. According to some users, the Pixel has a battery life of just over 8 hours with standard use.

While this might be enough to get through a day’s work, it just barely cuts it. And even worse, users report a significant drop in that lifespan when using big apps or playing demanding games.

On the other hand, Apple’s powerful A16 Bionic can run for over 13 hours with regular use on a single charge. Furthermore, the device handles gaming with ease, with the battery life hardly dropping. If you’re concerned about having enough power to make it through the day, this is the phone for you.

Where the iPhone 14 Pro Max falls short is with its rapid charging. Refusing to adopt the universal USB-C port, this device only charges at a max wired rate of 20W. Compare that to the Pixel 7 Pro, which can charge at a much higher 30W; while its battery is lackluster, at least you can charge it up quickly.

Price

It’s clear that the Pixel 7 Pro falls short in several categories compared to its Apple competition. However, Google recognizes this and accommodates it at an affordable price.

The Pixel 7 Pro starts at a price of $899.99 for 128 GB of storage and 12 GB of memory. For a great design, quality features, and the best Android camera on the market, that’s about as low a deal as you can find.

And this is where Apple makes a hard sell; while it’s clear this smartphone leads in performance, battery life, display, and features, you’re hard-pressed to find the iPhone 14 Pro Max for anything less than $1,100. Additionally, you’ll have to purchase a charge block separate, and your old case definitely won’t fit. If you’re considering this smartphone, you’ll have to consider a serious investment.
