Why Should You Buy the Google Nest Protect?
Throughout the U.S., two-thirds of all home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke detectors. And each year, at least 420 Americans die from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. So, one of the easiest ways that you can protect your home and loved ones is by installing smoke and carbon dioxide detectors throughout your home and ensuring that they are always operational.
You’ll probably need more than you think. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) suggests that you install smoke detectors:
- On every floor of your home
- In each bedroom and outside sleeping areas
- In hallways
Carbon monoxide detectors should be installed:
- On every floor of your home
- Outside sleeping areas
- In the kitchen
- In the living room
- In dining areas
- In the garage
- In the laundry room (if you have a gas clothes dryer)
- Near your gas furnace
Check local regulations since requirements and laws for smoke and carbon monoxide detector placement vary by city and state. Also, smoke detectors should always be installed on the ceiling since heat rises. Carbon monoxide detectors, on the other hand, should be installed at knee height. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the placement of combination smoke and carbon dioxide detectors.
Google Nest Protect
The Google Nest Protect is a combination smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detector that tells you where the smoke or CO is in a friendly, human voice that’s designed to inform, not panic, residents. This is important because panic can cause people to make poor decisions in an emergency.
Some of the benefits of the Google Nest Protect:
- It’s easy to install
- It has a battery life of up to five years
- You can control it by voice or phone
- Voice alerts will tell you whether the issue is smoke or CO and its location in your home so you can respond appropriately
- It will send alerts to your smartphone to advise you of issues when you’re away
- You can connect all the Google Nest Protect devices in your home so if one goes off, they all will go off
Is the Google Nest Protect Worth It?
We compared the Google Nest Protect with two comparable products: the First Alert SCO501B3 and the Kidde KN-COEG-3. The Google Nest Protect has a list price that’s twice as high as the other two alarms. All three detect smoke and carbon monoxide, are battery-operated, and don’t have backup batteries.
That’s where the similarities end. Only the Google Nest Protect requires Wi-Fi connectivity (which will be a downside if your Wi-Fi goes out during a smoke or CO event). What’s more, only the Google Nest Protect is voice-controlled, can provide smartphone notifications, can be interconnected with other Google Nest Protect devices, and features a nightlight.
Whether the Google Nest Protect is “worth it” depends on two factors, including:
- How important “smart device” features are to you
- How many you will need to purchase to provide coverage for your home
At the sale price of $99, this device is still considerably more expensive than comparable products. But if smart device features are important to you, it may be worth considering.
