History of Yahoo Mail

Yahoo! has partnered with Four11, an online communications firm, to create co-branded white pages. “We always had a bias about being acquired by Yahoo. Yahoo were more entrepreneurial than Microsoft,” said Marvin Gavin, who worked as the director of international business development at Four11.

In the end, Yahoo! paid $96 million for Four11. The RocketMail webmail service, which launched in 1997, was the reason for Four11’s acquisition. On October 8, 1997, Yahoo! announced the acquisition, which coincided with the launch of Yahoo! Mail.

Many Rocketmail users found the transition to Yahoo! Mail to be complicated. As a result, Yahoo! discontinued free software client access on March 21, 2002, and instead introduced a $29.99 per year Mail Forwarding Service.

The Yahoo! network was gradually redesigned in 2002. The company’s website was updated on July 2, and it was announced that Yahoo! Mail and other services would be redesigned. New features, such as DHTML drop-down menus, different category tabs, and a user-customizable color scheme, were implemented alongside the new design.

Oddpost, a webmail service that simulated a desktop email client, was acquired by Yahoo! on July 9, 2004. Drag-and-drop support, right-click menus, RSS feeds, a preview pane, and increased speed by using email caching to reduce response time were all included in Oddpost. Many of the features have been incorporated into an updated version of Yahoo! Mail.

Yahoo! updated its mail service in October 2015 with a “more subtle” redesign and improved mobile features. In addition, the Yahoo! Account Key, a smartphone-based password login replacement, was also released simultaneously.

In 2017, Yahoo! redesigned its web interface with a “less is more” aesthetic and added the ability to customize it with different color schemes and layouts. In addition, Yahoo! added a feature to watch NFL games in 2020.

In 2017, Yahoo! toned down the design of its web interface and made it customizable with different color schemes and layouts.

Gmail’s Better Security

In December 2013, approximately one million users, or one percent of the site’s total users, could not access their emails for several days due to a significant outage. The site’s users were then publicly apologized to by Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer.

Following a security breach that Yahoo! believed occurred through a third-party website in January 2014, an undisclosed number of usernames and passwords were released to hackers. As a result, Yahoo! contacted affected users and asked them to change their passwords.

Because Gmail has a shorter session expiry time than Yahoo Main, it is more secure. In addition, it has security features that force the user to use a safer and stronger password and two-step authentication, which increases the security of any account.

Gmail is Yahoo Mail’s Main Rival

Google announced its Gmail service with 1 GB of storage on April 1, 2004, but Gmail’s invitation-only accounts kept other webmail services in the spotlight. In response, most major webmail providers, including Yahoo! Mail, increased mailbox storage. Yahoo! initially promised 100 MB of storage for basic accounts and 2 GB for premium accounts. However, Yahoo! Mail soon increased its free storage quota to 1 GB before eventually allowing users to store unlimited data. From March 27, 2007, to October 8, 2013, Yahoo! Mail offered free unlimited storage.

Gmail vs Yahoo Mail: Which One Is Better? Which One Should You Use?

Yahoo Mail has a lot of the same features as Gmail, plus some extras like custom views for specific types of messages and access to Yahoo’s news services. However, it cannot compete with the number of benefits offered by Gmail.

Gmail is noticeably faster, has a cleaner interface, is generally considered more secure, offers more filtering and organization options. Thanks to its open nature, you can customize your experience with hundreds of different add-ons and extensions.

If you’re currently using Yahoo Mail, you should consider switching to Gmail; the process is simple and can be found under the Accounts and Import tab in the Settings menu. If you’re creating an account from the ground up, Gmail is an excellent place to start.
