GEEKOM Mini IT13 vs. AS6: What’s the Difference?

Ultra-compact desktops have been growing in popularity in recent years. Among the many companies pursuing this design philosophy is Geekom. Based in Taiwan, this company specializes in creating a variety of mini PCs that target a range of users.

While Geekom as a brand might be 20 years old, they’ve only been in the mini PC market for the last few years. In this short time, they’ve made quite a name for themselves and now offer a pretty impressive range of small desktops.

They haven’t been afraid of experimenting with different processors either, with fans of both Intel and AMD having options to pick from in their lineup.

Looking at the side-by-side comparison, it’s clear these PCs are meant to be sister models. Besides the CPU, these PCs are identical.

What’s important to remember is that these computers are targeting the same niche, so the key comparison between these models will focus on the CPU differences and how this affects the computer overall.

With that in mind, let’s start comparing.

Geekom Mini IT13 vs. AS6
The Geekom AS6 (shown on the left) is just slightly larger than the Mini IT13 (shown on the right). But both desktops are strikingly compact.

Size & Design

Despite being similar models from the same company, these computers have noticeably different aesthetics. The IT13 looks almost like an Intel NUC — with an eerily similar chassis and IO layout, too. And if it wasn’t for the Geekom branding, you might even be fooled.

The chassis here has side vents pulling into a rear exhaust and most of its IO on the rear. The model shown has a wonderful icy blue exterior, which matches the Intel NUC theme. The IT13 is as light and small as you’d expect, coming in at just under one and a half pounds and measuring small enough to hold in one hand.

The AS6, on the other hand, has a sleek black casing with a ridged texture on the front and back. The side ventilation is also classy, with a diagonal patterned vent cover. Thanks to this design, this model looks more like a mini console.

It’s a bit heavier than the Intel equal, coming in at half a pound heavier, but that shouldn’t be too much of a concern. Both desktops are tiny compared to conventional desktop computers.

The Geekom AS6 is shown next to an Xbox One, which shares a striking resemblance. They definitely borrowed some of the aesthetics from gaming consoles.

CPU Comparison

As we’ve been teasing throughout this article, this boils down to a question of AMD vs. Intel. This battle has been raging for years. And these two desktops make for an easy comparison. But there’s also an important difference: your choice of CPU will also affect what integrated graphics you’ll get. For gamers, this might be even more important than your CPU choice.

Focusing on the chips, the competition is stiff from a benchmarking perspective. In most tests, the i9-13900H in the IT13 edges ahead of the Ryzen 9 6900HX in the AS6, but not by a lot.

Keep in mind most benchmarks aren’t exactly representative of real-world use cases, but they still provide insight into how these chips may perform comparatively.

While AMD has an advantage with its 6 nm chips (meaning they squeeze more transistors into a smaller space), the effectiveness of Intel’s performance and efficiency cores keeps their chip just ahead.

Both computers are punching above their weight class regardless of what CPU you might prefer, so don’t worry about being able to use these computers as workstations. As for gaming, either of these CPUs is a decent choice, although neither one can really hold a candle to a full-sized gaming desktop.

The Mini IT13 on the left, is shown flexing its SD card reader, something you won’t find on the AS6.

RAM

Geekom didn’t pull any punches when putting RAM into both devices, as they come with a staggering 32GB each right out of the box. That is more RAM than most computers in this price range offer, and that isn’t even the maximum amount you can install.

The AS6 does take the edge here, as it has DDR5 RAM clocked to 4800 MHz. This is blazing fast, as even Geekom notes that the RAM in the AS6 is 40% faster than the 3200 MHz of DDR4 RAM in the IT13.

Even with this difference, this balances the computers against each other. The speed differences should be negligible at this amount of RAM, but for working or even gaming, the difference could be noticeable

If the RAM is an issue for you, you can also be sure you’ll have the option to upgrade later on, as these computers are made to be modified. If you have a screwdriver lying around, you can upgrade your RAM to as high as 64GB. Geekom also features a series of videos to assist anyone with these upgrades. But even if you have never upgraded a PC before, these two systems are super simple to work on.

When upgrading your Geekom AS6, you just need to be careful of the orange ribbon cable connecting one side of the computer to the other.

Graphics

These devices make use of integrated graphics tied to their processors. This won’t be as powerful as a dedicated card, but 4K content or HD 60FPS gaming should be no issue.

The Intel chip uses Intel’s Iris Xe architecture, while AMD is using their Radeon 680M.

Typically, we think of bare minimum fidelity when we think of integrated graphics. There’s been a lot of innovation on both sides. What’s amazing is that while these won’t be the most powerful chips on the market, you’ll be able to run most games from these machines, though you might have to turn down the settings on more demanding titles.

Even on an AMD-integrated GPU that is roughly a third of the power of the Radeon 680M, games like Warzone DMZ were still able to run comfortably at 30fps 1080p and stay stable for longer gaming sessions.

With this in mind, the Iris Xe chip and Radeon 680M are similar, with the 680M performing better in most benchmarks. Your CPU will affect this, but since the CPUs are also very similar and powerful, the power differences cancel out.

Storage

Both devices come with a lot of storage to start with. The IT13 is flexing a sturdy 2 TB M.2 SSD, and the AS6 rocks a 1 TB M.2 SSD, but this isn’t where storage ends for either device.

Both computers have two slots for M.2 drives, but the AS6 supports up to a 2TB drive for each slot. This is a slight edge over the IT13, which supports 2TB in its primary slot and 1TB in its secondary slot. But if you really want to go all out, both computers support up to 2TB in an auxiliary 2.5″ SATA slot. So, you have a choice of 5TB or 6TB. At the end of the day, these are both more storage than most users will ever need. But who knows — people were saying similar things when the first 1GB hard drives dropped.

This won’t be too much of an issue if you’re measuring your drives in terabytes, but having additional room is always nice. Photographers and similar professionals may prefer the IT13 as well because of its convenient SD card slot.

upgrading the Geekom Mini IT13
Both desktops let you upgrade the internals with ease: the RAM and SSD are quickly accessible. As you can see on the IT13 shown here, you have one M.2 slot and one SATA slot available and ready to take an upgrade.

Wireless & Networking Capabilities

Both devices also have great network performance thanks to their Wi-Fi 6 compatibility. This means you’ll have great download and upload speeds regardless of whether you can access ethernet.

Wi-Fi 6 also adds network reliability and improved encryption, so you’ll have the fastest and most secure wireless capabilities on both devices.

Even if you still prefer a hardwired connection over wireless, you’ll get fantastic network performance. If you have ethernet access, you’ll have an amazing 2.5 Gbps of transfer speed; granted, you have a router and cable that can provide this.

Bluetooth isn’t a worry either because both devices have Bluetooth 5.2 capabilities. Want to use your wireless headphones or wireless mouse? Not a problem. These days, we’ve come to expect wireless capabilities in all of our devices, so it is nice to see that both of these systems are keeping up.

Input and Output

Despite their size, these devices don’t shy away from giving you plenty of IO options. Both systems give you two USBs and a headphone port on the front. While the AS6 gives you a USB C on the front and one on the back, the IT13 keeps both USB C ports on the back. Besides that, the biggest difference is that the AS6 provides a display port and one additional USB. But the IT13 gives you an SD card reader.

With such minor differences, neither one is really better in this department. You can always pick up an adapter if you need an SD card reader on your AS6, or if you need display port capabilities on your IT13. Either way, both desktops support up to four 4K displays at once. Normally, you would need a discrete GPU to get these capabilities, so that is pretty impressive, considering the size.

Both desktops have nearly identical IO configurations, though the AS6 also has a Display Port connector on the back.

GEEKOM Mini IT13 vs. AS6: Which is Better? Which Should I Use?

These computers are extremely similar, but they do differentiate themselves with the small differences shown. Both devices are modern and use great technology, so what’s the defining factor?

If you’re a professional, such as a content creator or engineer, the IT13 benefits from a more powerful CPU. In these cases, a better CPU offers better performance.

For gaming or 3D artists, it might be better to go with the AS6, as the GPU benefits are too good to pass up.  Especially with gaming, AMD has done amazing work on its integrated chips, and you can expect this to improve with future updates. Plus, the DDR5 RAM is a nice bonus. And this might be subjective, but the AS6 just looks nicer, too.

Other than those considerations, these computers are so similar you can’t go wrong with either one. Both computers should be more than capable of doing anything the other model can, and only in very specific situations will a significant difference be noticeable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Geekom a Chinese company?

No, Geekom is based in Taiwan. This is great as they have access to “FABs,” the fabrication facilities where quite a lot of technology is produced, and as a result, they can get very competitive pricing.

What is the best mini gaming PC?

It’s hard to say which mini PC is best for gaming, but anything that has a discreet graphics card will outperform most integrated solutions. Look for something with at least 16 GB of RAM and a discreet graphics card. If you’re comparing the IT13 and AS6, the AS6 will win out due to the more powerful graphics, even though both are integrated.

How do I choose a mini computer?

Depending on what you intend on using your computer for, find something that prioritizes the components most important to you. If you’re not a professional or power user, something that has modern parts is fine enough. If you know you have special requirements, focus on that component, as most mini-systems will be built to avoid major bottlenecks.

Are Geekom mini PCs good for gaming?

Yes! There are several Geekom mini PCs that can be used for gaming. But don’t think that these can replace conventional gaming desktops with discrete GPUs. They don’t have the graphics power for intensive gaming, but they’ll get the job done with older or less resource-intensive games.

Can a mini PC play AAA games?

Yes, depending on your settings and PC configuration, a mini PC is capable of running a AAA game. You definitely will not be able to run them at the highest settings, but playing most titles at low settings shouldn’t be an issue.

Do mini-computers overheat?

It’s possible for a mini-computer to overheat, but this will be for the same reason any PC could overheat. If you don’t have adequate ventilation, are in a hot ambient temperature, or just have a dusty and dirty PC, your computer can and will overheat. This is not unique to mini PCs, but they might be more susceptible to these causes.

Are mini PCs good for everyday use?

Yes! Mini PCs are just PCs. For many users, they are one of the best choices for everyday use since they are so small and you can put them anywhere.
