Garmin Venu 2 Vs. Apple Watch Ultra: What’s the Difference

In the wearable market, you often have to settle for function or form. Finding a stylish smartwatch that tracks activity accurately is no easy task, but Garmin Venu 2 and Apple Watch Ultra might bring both.

Design

From a visual standpoint, Venu 2 follows the classic lines seen in most Garmin watches. However, long gone are the rugged edges and oversized bezel. While the watch comes in three sizes – like most other models from the brand – bezel sizes vary from 40 to 45 millimeters, with no 51mm option that looks like a tuna can on the wrist. The bezel’s edges are smooth, shiny, and stylish, and the silicone band can be replaced with a more fashionable leather one.

Customizable faces and an always-on mode make it easy to give the watch a classic or modern face. The AMOLED display features a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 lens, which withstands heavy daily use at the gym. However, it might not be the right display lens for rugged outdoor activities.

The Apple Watch Ultra also maintains the classic square lines of the brand. A titanium frame sheds off some weight, but this watch is still heavier than the Venu 2. Nevertheless, the Apple Watch Ultra is a smartwatch for outdoor adventures with a sapphire crystal front and back that’s much more resistant than Gorilla glass.

Like the Venu 2, the Apple Watch Ultra features customizable faces. The watch has three bands for daily use, trail, and swimming. This watch comes with an always-on retina display that enhances the aesthetic factor.

Daily Smart Features

Apple Watch was born to make smartphone features wearable, and the Ultra model doesn’t disappoint. It comes with cellular connectivity, meaning you can slip a SIM card into it and make phone calls from your wrist, send and receive texts, download whatever apps you want from the App Store, and more. You can obviously use the watch for music and podcast streaming or to get directions with maps. There is little that you cannot do with this smartwatch.

For decades, Garmin focused on improving functionalities and features for athletes. Yet, Venu 2 shows that a brand can become inclusive. Daily smart features include smart notifications, calendar, weather, smartphone music control, and on-watch music storage. This wearable allows you to reject or text-respond to a call, but this function only works with Android phones.

Payments from your wrist are possible with both devices, but the Venu 2 only comes with Garmin Pay. On the Apple Watch Ultra, you can use Apple Pay or download any wallet from the App Store.

Activity Tracking

Apple Watch Ultra shines in daily smart functionality, but we shouldn’t forget that the brand makes smartphones and computers, not activity trackers. While this watch can track activity and help you reach fitness goals, it can only do so by using sensors and limited functions.

It doesn’t have dedicated sports profiles but includes a compass, gyroscope, depth gauge, and the Oceanic+ app that can serve as a dive computer. With a water resistance rating up to 10ATM, it is a better choice for swimmers than Garmin Venu 2.

Despite being water-rated at 5ATM, Venu 2 has so many fitness tracking features that it easily overshadows the Apple Watch Ultra. You can use the Venu 2 for training planning and analyzing, access customizable data pages, pause activity tracking, and work with advanced workout plans.

The Venu 2 also features dedicated sports profiles that deliver bespoke performance tracking for the selected activity. Profiles include running, golf, cycling, swimming, and outdoor recreation. Another highlight is the kid activity tracking feature which is great for families.

Safety and Health Monitoring

The Venu 2 also shines when it comes to safety and health monitoring. This wearable can check your heart rate during the workout and resting phase, calculate your fitness age, track your blood oxygen level, send relaxation reminders, monitor your sleep, and even provide sleep scores and insights.

You can keep the heart rate under control with the Apple Watch Ultra, too, but this watch doesn’t provide many other insights. It does feature feminine health functions, which can track your cycle and calculate ovulation estimates. Feminine health features are also present on Garmin.

Battery Life

Garmin accustomed us to batteries that go on and on for days or even months. And the Venu 2 doesn’t disappoint, especially compared to the Apple Watch Ultra. The former has a battery life of up to 11 days when used in smartwatch mode without GPS. On energy saving mode, Apple has a battery life of around 60 hours, which drops to 36 hours under normal use. In GPS mode and without music, the Venu 2 can provide around 22 hours of battery life.

Price

A major difference between Garmin Venu 2 and Apple Watch Ultra is the price. The former, with premium features and voice functionality, costs around $450 at the moment. The Apple Watch Ultra is about twice as much.
