Galaxy Z Flip3 vs. Z Flip4: What’s the difference?
Since its inception, Samsung has done everything possible to improve the Z Flip series with each new model. It continues the same practice with both Z Flip3 and Z Flip4. Samsung released its Z Flip3 phone in August 2021, leading the foldable phone market.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 is a foldable phone that competes with only the Samsung Z fold and the Motorola Razr. The Z Flip3 quickly gained popularity among its target audience owing to its innovative foldable design. Its only true competitor is its successor, the Z Flip4, which Samsung released in August 2022.
At first glance, the Z Flip4 appears to be cloned from the Z Flip3. However, by digging deeper into the specifications of both phones, several differences became apparent to us. We compared both phones based on their design, display, camera, performance, battery life, pricing, and other factors.
Design
When comparing the Galaxy Z Flip3 and Z Flip4, it is difficult to tell the difference because Samsung has not made many design changes. Both phones have nearly identical dimensions, display sizes, and layouts.
First, the Z Flip3 introduces a large display, which the Z Flip4 maintains. Still, the buttons section becomes noticeably more prominent in the successor model, and the edges become more square and flat. Second, the Z Flip4 is a slightly thicker and narrower phone with larger camera lenses and a slimmer hinge than its predecessor, the Z Flip3. Apart from these modifications, the Z Flip4 retains the same design and display as the Z Flip3. It has also retained the fingerprint sensor and the side placement of the power button, as seen on the Z Flip3. Third, in terms of color availability, the Z Flip4 is available in more vibrant hues such as Bora purple, Blue, Graphite, and Pink gold. The Phantom Black, Cream, Green, and Lavender colors are available on the Z Flip3. Aside from these, the Bespoke option is available for both models.
Display
There are no surprises in this category, as both models are very similar. The Z Flip3 and the Z Flip4 both have 6.7-inch unfolded displays with a resolution of 2640 x 1080, a brightness of 1200 nits, and fully adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. In addition, a 1.9-inch cover display is available for reading notifications and snippets, checking dates and times, scrolling through appointments, enabling smart things, and replying to messages. The Samsung Z Flip4 offers excellent viewing options, higher resolution, and increased brightness, making it ideal for outdoor use and in low-light conditions.
Performance
This is one category where the Z Flip4 outperforms its predecessor, the Z Flip3. With the latest SoC snapdragon 8 plus gen 1 processor, 8GB RAM, and multiple storage options such as 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB, the Z Flip4 becomes a performance powerhouse.
With its top-of-the-line chipset, CPU, NPU, and GPU, the Z Flip4 is ideal for day-to-day activities such as gaming, streaming, video conferencing, picture capturing, and designing. The Z Flip3 has a 2021-powered Snapdragon 888 SoC with an octa-core processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of internal storage, which is great until you compare it to the Z Flip4. While playing high-resolution games like Call of Duty or World of WarCraft, the Z Flip3 consumes more processing power and generates more heat. It eventually puts too much strain on your battery. However, you will never encounter this situation with the Z Flip4 because the snapdragon 8 plus gen 1 SoC is there to meet all your gaming and streaming needs while also assisting the processor in efficiently directing battery power.
Camera
In this category, there is no significant difference between the Galaxy Z Flip3 and the Z Flip4, as they have very similar configurations. In the current Z Flip4, Samsung has continued its 12MP dual camera philosophy with an optical image stabilizer, as exists in the Z Flip3. However, the main camera is 65% brighter than its predecessor, allowing you to take photos in low light and under different conditions. As a result, there is a very slight, yet still noticeable difference between the Z Flip4 and the Z Flip3.
The 12MP UltraWide camera with a 123-degree viewing angle and color reproduction is adequate for taking panorama photos and videos. Both models feature a 10MP front-facing camera that is ideal for taking selfies and videos. However, with the help of the cover screen, we can take selfies with the Z Flip4’s 10MP primary sensor in folded condition.
Battery Life
Samsung has increased the battery capacity of the Galaxy Z Flip4 to 3700mAh and added a 25W fast charging option. Fast charging can recharge your Z Flip4 battery up to 50% in just 30 minutes.
Although the Z Flip4 outperforms the Z Flip3 in terms of battery capacity and fast charging, it falls short in terms of performance compared to other Samsung product lines, as a single full battery charge can only last a single day. We excuse the Z Flip4 here because its unique design must accommodate the hinge, secondary display, and battery.
It’s also worth noting that both Z Flip models support wireless and reverse wireless charging, allowing you to charge your earbuds and smartwatches. The Z Flip4 leads this category because of its large battery and fast charging.
Operating System
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 ships with Android 11 and One UI 3.1.1, but it is upgradeable to Android 12L/One UI 4.1, which limits the possibility of future updates. In contrast, Samsung has launched the Z Flip4 with the latest Android 12 operating system based on one UI 4.1.1, which a Z Flip3 could reach after an upgrade, implying that the Z Flip4 is a year ahead of its predecessor and will receive more security updates and patches. As a result, we can declare Z Flip4 the winner of this category.
Pricing
Samsung released the Galaxy Z Flip4 at the same price as the Z Flip3 variant with 128GB storage and 8GB RAM, which is $999. But, everything has a cost, so increasing the memory size and storage capacity will cause the Z Flip4 price to rise slightly. Color, memory, and storage options are entirely dependent on market availability. You can purchase both phones from Amazon, the Samsung store, or Best Buy.
