The History of GAC
The channel first launched as Great American Country (GAC), a country music station, by Jones Radio Network in 1995. The first music video it broadcasted was Garth Brooks’ “The Thunder Rolls.”
GAC’s programming was expanded when Scripps Network purchased it in 2004, and that included the option to watch lifestyle shows. In December 2007, a partnership with ABC Radio Networks was announced, and GAC created a show called GAC Nights: Live from Nashville. This country music radio show broadcasted from GAC’s studios.
The channel dropped the GAC acronym and rebranded to its full name, Great American Country in 2013, trying to emphasize its change from country music only to the country lifestyle as a whole. Although it still included music programming, shows like Celebrity Motor Homes and Farm Kings highlighted this change.
As of 2021, the channel has been owned by Great American Media and Hicks Equity Partners. The network was rebranded as GAC Family in 2021 and is now better known as Great American Family. The channel became a family-oriented network, with the focus still on the country lifestyle. It also expanded its offerings to original made-for-TV movies, including holiday showcases.
While GAC has rebranded quite a few times in the last several years, the channel currently airs quite a few options when it comes to programming. Here’s what you’ll find when you tune in.
GAC doesn’t have many of its own shows at this time, but it does have two that are currently airing. The first, When Hope Calls, is an American drama based on the Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart. The show is based on two characters in the early 1900s — Lillian and Grace — two orphaned sisters, who were separated as children and have reunited as adults. The two open an orphanage in a small town and deal with love and family.
The other show, The Abigail Mysteries, aired its first season in 2023. The story focuses on true crime podcaster Abby Broukes who is struggling with loss. She goes on a journey of faith as she works with her old childhood crush, now a policeman, to solve a local mystery. While it hasn’t been renewed for season two yet, fans are hopeful.
GAC also airs syndicated shows from other networks, including Bewitched, Father Knows Best, Full House and Fuller House, Columbo, and Little House on the Prairie. That’s just to name a few. These shows offer reruns that are aired throughout the day.
Where GAC really shines is its original movies, especially since the channel has stated that it wants to be similar to the Hallmark channel. A few recently aired films include An Autumn Romance, Much Ado About Christmas, A Belgian Chocolate Christmas, and Christmas Sweethearts. While some of these movies are also available on DVD, many of them can only be found on the channel.
Great American Living Channel Programming
GAC only has one sister channel — Great American Living. Unfortunately, the channel hasn’t made any agreements with DirecTV, so it’s not currently available on the cable network. If you’d like to watch the channel, there are several ways to do it until the companies come to an agreement.
If you choose to tune in, you’ll be able to watch shows in niches like horse sports, reality TV, and old western shows. These include Mountain Mamas, Bonanza, Going RV, and Lone Ranger.
Where to Find the Great American Living Channel
If you’d like to view the Great American Living channel, there are quite a few options. In addition to watching GAC on DirecTV, it’s also currently available on Dish Network, Frontier, Philo, Sling, and more.
