Are you planning a long holiday but are unsure if your luggage will fit in your Ford Mustang Mach-E? Worry no more; we have all the details. The interior of the Ford Mustang Mach-E is stylish and tastefully finished, with a large cargo area, roomy seating in both rows, and an infotainment system that is generally simple to use.

Through its all-electric drivetrain, the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E has lived up to the reputation of the iconic Mustang nameplate. It’s marketed as a crossover. In addition to carrying classic Mustang-style cues like the repeating vertical bar tail lamps, the appearance is clean and aerodynamic. All Mach-Es are fun to drive, but exactly how much luggage can they haul?

The Mustang Mach-E features an average amount of cargo room for an electric SUV. With the rear seats folded down, there is a total of 59.7 cubic feet of space available. An additional 6.7 cubic feet of storage is also available on the front trunk, also known as the frunk.

You might be surprised to learn that the Mach-E’s boot is actually a little bit smaller than the petrol Mustang, despite having a boxier SUV shape. However, it’s easier to access because of its high-lifting hatch. Every Mach-E has five doors.

Read on to learn more about the unique features of the Mustang Mach-E.

Cargo Space

Ford didn’t design the Mustang Mach-E with the largest boot, and with 402 liters, it falls far short of the Volkswagen ID. 4’s 543-liter cargo area. The hatch-style trunk of the Mach-E serves to increase cargo room. According to Ford, there are 29 cubic feet behind the rear seat. There is a smart cargo cover attached to the rear hatch that you can remove to get some more trunk space.

Regardless of how you look at it, the space is really functional. A split floor gives you the option of a level loadspace or increased luggage capacity, but if you arrange it for the latter, be aware that there will be a sizable lip to lift items over. They fold in the basic 60/40 configuration. You can also remove the seats to obtain 1,420 liters of space.

Its 402-liter volume allows seven carry-on suitcases to fit below the tonneau cover. Comparing competitors, the ID.4 can fit nine, the bZ4X can fit eight, and the Model Y an astonishing ten, so that’s reasonable but a little disappointing. The split, foldable rear seats on the Mach-E also increase the amount of cargo space available.

In terms of cubic feet, the Mach-E is just slightly more constrained when compared to equally sized EVs. The table below provides a clearer picture for comparison.

Dimensions of Mach-E’s Trunk

Here are the approximate measurements of the Ford Mustang Mach-E trunk:

  • 31″ measured from the side of the car from the back of the back seats to the lip of the rear door area,
  • 34″ measured from the center of the car to the lip of the rear door area,
  • 19″ from the cargo area’s top to bottom, directly in front of the back door,
  • 37″ measured from the side of the car to the top of the lip of the back door area,
  • 38″ measured from the center of the vehicle to over the edge of the back door area,
  • 42″ to 43″ inches from end to end across the trunk region of the vehicle,
  • behind the back seats, the cargo space is 27″ from top to floor.

Hands-Free Tailgate Feature

Ford offers a hands-free power lift tailgate on all its models. When you have the keyfob in your pocket, the rear door opens. This is thanks to a convenient premium function that is activated by sweeping your foot under the back bumper.

Ford Mustang Mach-E: Cargo Cover

The cargo cover of Mach-E is not the typical cover with a massive cartridge that plugs into the sides and consumes a load of available cargo space. It’s not the hard, rigid cargo cover found in most hatchbacks.

Instead, it’s a piece of mesh that attaches to ports on the rear hatch and the cargo opening of the vehicle. This can come out as unattractive and unworthy of a car with a price tag of $50,000 or more.

Nevertheless, this is a clever, practical design. It can cover your cargo without occupying much room or needing to be detached to maximize cargo capacity because it is so thin. Even better, should the cover get in the way of packing your bags, it folds in on itself, making for exceedingly simple storage.

You can tuck it practically anywhere amid the luggage back there because it is so small and flat. The cargo cover has a downside though, which is somewhat disappointing.

The material is thin and doesn’t attach well. So, even if it were fastened to the hatch door, it would frequently fall off whenever the hatch was opened. Driving with your windows down also increases the likelihood of the cover separating.

Front Trunk

The Ford Mustang Mach-E trunk is slightly different from what you’re used to as it sits beneath the car’s hood rather than in the back. Ford has nicknamed it “frunk” because of its location. The absence of a combustion engine results in more luggage space. The front boot has a capacity of 81 liters.

If you remove the storage divider, the space goes up to 100 liters. This space is big enough for a few shopping bags, one or two overnight bags, and other essentials. The fact that It has a drain plug makes it suitable for use as an ice cooler to keep your drinks cool on long drives.

You can also throw your muddy sports shoes in there, then hose it out once you get home. There’s a convenient cable storage system if you frequently carry charging cords. But if you have a wall box, you can definitely do without this and use the additional capacity more effectively.

The frunk also has an organizer to prevent delicate items from being damaged during vigorous cornering. To pop the front trunk, open the driver’s side front door, look for the latch under the steering wheel and pull it twice to pop the trunk.

Interior Space and Comfort

There is plenty of space inside the Mach-E. A 6-foot person can comfortably drive the vehicle. Although the back seat is a bit cramped up at that height, with the generous rear headroom of up to 39.3 inches, it still seems suitable for anyone taller than six feet.

Ford has incorporated substance and style into the Mustang Mach-E. Because of its unique EV platform, the cabin floor is fully flat, benefiting the middle passenger in the back, who can move around comfortably without crossing the transmission tunnel in a standard ICE vehicle. There is also additional room for more compartments and storage trays at the front.

Final Thoughts

Ford has taken advantage of Mach-E’s status as a completely electric vehicle that does not require a transmission tunnel or combustion engine under the hood to increase space for passengers and cargo. All the while maintaining the car’s fashionable appearance.

Although the Ford Mustang Mach-E’s trunk has plenty of room, it can only be stuffed with one extra-large, one large, and three carry-on baggage. The trunk lid cannot close when two extra-large suitcases are placed inside, preventing the addition of extra bags. When Mach-E’s tailgate is unable to close, it automatically opens back up.

The frunk can hold large luggage if the divider is taken off, which is a wonderful feature. The Mustang Mach-E does not have the biggest trunk, but it’s a practical car. Overall, the Mach-E scores well, it’s suitable for small families, and it’s worth buying.
