The History of ESPN+

©History-Computer.com
ESPN+ is a streaming service that offers exclusive sports content beyond what can be found on ESPN’s broadcast network or sister stations. It first launched in April 2018 — more than a year before parent company Disney launched Disney+. The service currently costs $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year. Subscribers get access to live sports events, original shows, and an extensive library of sports content for this one low price.
The launch of ESPN+ was a key part of Disney’s strategy to adapt to the rapidly growing streaming landscape. It aimed to reach a broader audience than the channel alone, appealing to cord-cutters who were moving away from traditional cable TV as well as sports fanatics who wanted more from their favorite channel. It didn’t take long for the service to gain popularity. The service only grew more popular as it secured rights to various sports like UFC, soccer, and college football.
In addition to its exclusive live sporting events, ESPN+ also offers exclusive streaming content like movies, documentaries, and television shows. In 2020, Disney bundled ESPN+ with its other streaming services, Disney+ and Hulu. This bundle came at a discounted price in an effort to boost subscriber numbers company-wide. Thus, ESPN+ has continued to serve as a go-to destination for sports fans looking for live games, analysis, and in-depth coverage alike.
