The History of ESPN

Before ESPN, sports programming was limited to the weekends and only available on major networks like NBC, CBS, and ABC. In 1978, Bill Rasmussen, a lover of all things sports, had the brilliant idea for a 24-hour sports network. It first broadcast on September 7, 1979, with the sports program “SportsCenter,” and had Anheuser-Busch signed on as its exclusive advertiser.
ESPN became well-known in 1980 when it aired the first few games of the men’s Division I NCAA basketball tournament — now popularly known as “March Madness.” The channel also exclusively aired the 1980–1981 NFL draft.
In 1984, ESPN was purchased by the American Broadcasting Company (known as ABC). This helped the channel land contracts for college football and basketball games. The network added other sports to its portfolio, too, including baseball, hockey, soccer, and more. To further satisfy the varied interests of sports fans, the network also introduced new channels like ESPN2, ESPN+, and ESPNU.
In 2008, ESPN introduced the ESPN app for iPhones, embracing online streaming and enabling sports fans to access content anywhere, at any time. Since then, it has developed into a website and ESPN app for die-hard fans no matter what phone they carry.
The NFL, NBA, and MLB, to name a few, are just a few of the major leagues and events for which ESPN has broadcasting rights. Because of this, they are well-known to sports fans everywhere.
Since 1996, ESPN has been owned by Walt Disney Television. These days, ESPN’s legacy has provided sports entertainment and innovative sports broadcasting. Many sports fans in the United States agree that it’s one of the only channels you need in order to enjoy games from most sports.
ESPN Programming

ESPN 2 Programming
ESPN2 was designed to be a more youthful version of its parent network ESPN, with a younger-skewing demographic and a focus on sports that appealed to young adults. ESPNews Programming
In 1996, ESPN launched ESPNews, or ESPN3, to broadcast 24-hour sports news. In addition to sports-related news, the channel airs highlights, press conferences, and analyst commentary. A national ESPN broadcast will typically be replaced by ESPNews if it is blacked out in a specific market.
With programs like NBA Today, Get Up!, Around the Horn, and Pardon the Interruption, ESPNews provides quite a bit of news content.
