What Is Elden Ring?

Elden Ring is a colorful fantasy RPG made by FromSoftware Inc., and it was published by Bandai Namco. The game’s developers recognized elements from the Dark Souls world and wanted to expand upon that for Elden Ring. It’s not an exact copycat, of course, but it takes the best parts of the game and turns them into something unique.

You explore the Elden Ring world from a third-person point of view. This creates a unique perspective for players as they engage in battles, complete side quests, and defeat big bosses. Players traverse through six main world areas, on top of a horse named Torrent. You progress through the game with a combination of spells and weapons, or via stealth mechanics.

The end goal for Elden Ring players is to become the new Elden Lord. The game’s lore is explained throughout the storyline, introducing you to characters and situations at a steady pace. You can also combat other players in a player-versus-player mode.

The Development of Elden Ring

Though it was just released last year, Elden Ring was several years in the making. FromSoftware Inc. first began this project in 2017, unaware of how groundbreaking the release would be for their business, and for the gaming industry at large. Following the popularity of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, FromSoftware Inc. and Bandai Namco knew they had big shoes to fill, so they put their heart and soul into the development of Elden Ring.

The inspiration for the game took from mythology and the hero’s journey archetype. Writers George R. R. Martin (A Song of Ice And Fire) and Hidetaka Miyazaki curated the game with intention. It isn’t a clone of Dark Souls, but it takes its own path, instead. There is such deep lore by Martin that gamers could spend hours, even days, learning the ins and outs that exist outside of the game.

This game is no walk in the park—though you have plenty of things to explore, the difficulty level is pretty intense, even for experienced gamers. Developers did a great job at curating a game that requires lots of dedication to master. Still, this hasn’t stopped serious players from setting some impressive speed runs.

The Reception of Elden Ring

This release was one of the most successful of 2022. It was incredibly well received among fans, with many dedicating their lives to mastering it and learning its lore. Plus, popular streamers took to Elden Ring for their content, garnering massive audiences who also love the game.

In fact, Elden Ring received significantly less criticism than other releases. Of course, it has its own issues, but fans are able to look past them because of how intricately the game was designed. People have taken it so far as to integrate the game into their personality traits, in the same way that usually only exists with established franchises like Zelda or Final Fantasy.

If you’re a fan of traditional fantasy RPGs, you will absolutely love Elden Ring. It’s not a Final Fantasy copycat, but its respect for fantasy RPGs makes it feel familiar, and as a result, Elden Ring will go down as one of the greatest RPGs of all time.

Elden Ring Minimum System Requirements

Compared to its competitors, Elden Ring’s minimum system requirements are not that bad. You should have some upgraded hardware, but you don’t need everything to be top-of-the-line to run the game. Most modern gaming PCs and laptops can handle it, but it’s really important to dig through your computer’s specs and make sure they line up with or exceed the game’s minimum system requirements before you buy a copy.

To start, you need 12GB RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB or Radeon RX 580 graphics card or better, and at least an Intel Core i5-8400 or Ryzen 3 3300X processor. You’ll also need at least 60 GB of space on your drive (preferably an SSD) and Windows 10 or later. When you look at other popular fantasy RPGs like Hogwarts Legacy, these minimum requirements are honestly very doable.

The base requirements make it possible for more players to enjoy the game. For example, if your PC is a little older, you might be able to play Elden Ring. Or, if you’re on a limited budget, you can spring for a cheaper gaming computer. Just know that you won’t be getting much more than 30 FPS on low to medium settings.

The recommended system requirements for Elden Ring are pretty high. This is normal for fantasy RPGs; they tend to run some heavy graphics, and some people even like optimizing their PCs for ray-tracing or 4K displays. You don’t need to go all-out to get the best experience with the game, though. Some minor upgrades can make a major difference.

Elden Ring developers recommend 16 GB RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 or Radeon RX Vega 56 GPU or better, and at least an Intel Core i7-8700K or Ryzen 5 3600X processor. The memory and operating system recommended requirements match the minimum requirements, which could make things easier for new players.

If you want to max out the graphics settings, play at 4K resolution, and aim for the highest FPS possible, you’ll need an even more powerful CPU and GPU than what the developers suggest. But for most gamers, 1080p is fine.

Best CPUs to play Elden Ring

The recommended specs for Elden Ring are a bit of a doozy for gamers on a budget, or gamers who haven’t upgraded their setup in some time. Thankfully, it needs the same things as a lot of other modern releases, so you won’t need to dig too hard to find the right CPU to run Elden Ring on your PC.

Console players have it easy because they don’t have to think about this stuff. However, PC players shouldn’t worry! It’s not that difficult to upgrade your internal hardware — usually. Here’s what we suggest.

Intel Core i7 13700K

Best Performance
Intel Core i7 13700K
  • 16 cores (8 P-cores + 8 E-cores) and 24 threads
  • Intel UHD Graphics 770 included
  • Up to 5.4GHz unlocked
  • Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0
  • PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 support

While it may be tempting to upgrade all the way to the i9 model, you don’t need to do so to get a great experience. In fact, the i7 processor is significantly cheaper — you could save hundreds by upgrading to the i7 instead of the i9. Once you get your CPU to at least a newer i7, your computer should be able to run the most popular, current releases.

In a few years, you’ll probably want the i9 or AMD equivalent for whatever colossal fantasy RPG drops, but for now, you’re fine with an i7 processor. This is one of the best processors for gaming and we recommend it for most modern PC games.

Intel Core i5 13600K

Best Overall
Intel Core i5-13600K
  • 14 cores (6 P-cores + 8 E-cores) and 20 threads
  • Performance hybrid architecture
  • Up to 5.1GHz
  • Compatible with Intel 600 series and 700 series chipset-based motherboards
  • Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0

Similarly, you could upgrade your processor to the i5 model and be completely fine. Remember, Elden Ring lists this CPU as their minimum required processor. You would save a ton of money this way, but you should consider a few factors before you opt for the seemingly budget-friendly option straight away, as tempting as it is.

What other games are you planning on playing on your PC? Think as far into the future as possible, and then decide whether it is worth it to upgrade to the i7 or you can stick to the more cost-effective i5.

The Best GPUs to Play Elden Ring

Elden Ring’s graphics are amazing. In fact, the game’s graphics are often the selling point for new players. Their intensity adds to their charm; however, it also adds to your expenses. You’ll need a solid, reliable graphics card to even run the game.

Don’t get discouraged, though, as there are multiple different options for GPUs that will run Elden Ring at various price points to fit your budget.

This is, without a doubt, one of the best bang-for-your-buck graphics cards for Elden Ring. It has the capacity to run the game’s graphics at their highest potential, far beyond the recommendations from the developers.

This graphics card won’t give you 4K performance, but you’ll be able to run in 1080p on high settings easily. Plus, it isn’t too power-hungry, and most PCs will be compatible with the graphics card without any additional adjustments or other upgrades. It’s becoming more affordable over time, too, making it more accessible for people who are just getting started.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080

Best for 4K Gaming

  • Boost clock: 1725 MHz
  • Memory speed: 19 Gbps

Of course, there is always a higher-end version of the budget-friendly option. This upgrade is well worth it, showcasing the most powerful version of Elden Ring’s graphics. You will be spending a pretty penny to get a better experience, but you get what you pay for — and no, you don’t really need to spring for the 4000-series — but it won’t hurt.

Let’s look at the other end of the spectrum: if you want to spend as little as possible on a GPU, but don’t want to run at minimum graphics settings. This is the bare minimum option if you’re looking to play Elden Ring on your PC and still have a good time.

It’s budget-friendly and an okay pick for entry-level gamers. If you’re building your own custom PC, you might want to start here, especially if Elden Ring is the first game that you plan on playing. And you can always upgrade later if it doesn’t hold up to future games.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Elden Ring require a good computer?

Yes! To play Elden Ring on PC, you need at least a decently-good computer that was made within the last few years. Vintage gaming PCs and laptops certainly have their place, but Elden Ring is an intensive game with demanding graphics, and requires tons of storage. If you have a bare-bones PC or laptop, you might be able to upgrade internal parts at a fraction of the cost of purchasing an entirely new computer. Still, your computer needs to at least be “good” quality to run Elden Ring. You won’t get very far with the game otherwise, and the game’s performance might disappoint you if you don’t meet the requirements.

Is Elden Ring demanding on a PC?

The game is considerably demanding on most PCs. It has some pretty intense graphics, and it’s really heavy on storage. You can get away with having the bare minimum RAM requirements (12 GB RAM), but you’d fare much better with extra. You should focus on having a high-quality GPU, processor, and lots and LOTS of storage space.

Why is Elden Ring so popular?

The popularity of Elden Ring is no surprise. Fantasy RPGs have taken the forefront of the gaming industry for decades, with people totally immersing themselves in the rich lore. Think of the successes of games like Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts. Though it takes a different format, Elden Ring utilizes classic fantasy RPG elements to create a unique world to get audiences hooked. Plus, hype on social media catalyzed the Elden Ring boom when the game dropped. This happens with many new releases, but Elden Ring is one of the few that lives up to the hype. Simply put, it’s a fun, addictive game, and people love it!

Is Elden Ring very difficult?

There can be a bit of a learning curve with Elden Ring. New players are certainly welcomed and encouraged, but they may have a trickier time if they don’t have experience with other fantasy RPGs. The big bosses can be really tough to beat, especially if you are less familiar with the genre. It’s a good idea to use other resources if you’re just getting started, like tutorials online from YouTubers or content from streamers who have become experts. These days, it’s possible to start any game from square one, even the ones that are very difficult. We won’t tell, but you can also resort to cheats if you want to.

Should I buy Elden Ring if I’ve never played Dark Souls?

Yes, absolutely! You do not need to have any experience with Dark Souls if you’re interested in playing Elden Ring. They’re completely different games; playing Elden Ring from the beginning could be starting at square one for a brand new player. You do reap specific rewards from having experience with Dark Souls, though. For example, if you’ve spent hundreds of hours playing the previous release, you will have an advantage in combat with Elden Ring. So long as you have the time to commit to playing the game, you will have no problem starting with Elden Ring if you have never so much as watched a Dark Souls playthrough.

Is Elden Ring time consuming?

This is one of the most time-consuming releases that dropped in recent years. You should expect at least a few dozen (or hundred) hours mastering the skills and completing the game. Elden Ring is fun but daunting — you really need to be dedicated to your cause if you decide to start playing this game.
