Dewalt 20V Max Mower vs GreenWorks 80V Mower: What’s the Difference?

The Dewalt and GreenWorks lawnmowers are similar, as each has a 21″ cutting deck. The two mowers are also self-propelled. Their main difference lies in the battery platforms, which we will delve into below. For this article, we will compare Dewalt DCMWSP244U2 alongside the GreenWorks Pro.

Dewalt 20V

The Dewalt 20V mower has plenty of features in a compact package. It has a 21.5″ cutting deck slightly larger than the GreenWorks, but the gain is minimal. The mower uses a solid metal blade that is easily replaceable when worn out. Unfortunately, these smaller electric mowers get a bad reputation as they use less powerful batteries.

But don’t let the 20V in the name fool you because Dewalt has combined the power from two batteries which means even better performance. Many other mowers on the market hold two batteries but cannot combine the power. Dewalt essentially uses the two 20V batteries to deliver 40V to the motor. This means the motor will struggle less in taller grass.

The self-propelled motor is also on the front wheels like you’d find on a gas mower, instead of the rear, which is located on many electric mowers. This will be a matter of personal preference, but the front turning wheels make it easier for most people to turn the mower. The self-propelled speed is also easily controlled.

Electric mowers are known for being compact and easy to transport, and the Dewalt 20V is no exception. You can easily fold the handle down to the deck to make storing or moving it around easy. The Dewalt 20V has three different cutting options thanks to the included discharge chute, bag, and mulching kit. The deck is also easily adjustable with one lever.

GreenWorks 80V

Looking at the GreenWorks, you will notice many of the same or similar specifications, including a 21″ mowing deck. The naming system that GreenWorks uses is a little confusing because they refer to most of the mowers by size and voltage. However, a few different models use the same or similar names. The mower we are looking at is their pro model.

The GreenWorks 80V is self-propelled but is a little different than the Dewalt because the back wheels turn rather than the front. The good news is that speed is adjustable, so you can turn it up or down as needed, depending on your grass height and agility. The GreenWorks 80V is easily adjustable with one lever that moves all the wheels. The handle also folds down, which makes moving the mower easy.

Like the Dewalt, the GreenWorks 80V uses a brushless mower that provides extended runtime and a longer motor lifespan. The mower holds up to two 80V batteries at a time which it can draw between. The difference here is that you only need one battery for it to operate. The second battery provides a longer cutting time between needing to swap them out.

Pricing

The MSRP on the Dewalt 20V is $699, which is on the high side, but that includes two 10ah batteries. Remember that you need to have two 20V batteries in the mower for it to operate. The good thing about the Dewalt mower is it works with the batteries in their 20V platform. If you already have Dewalt drills or saws, you can swap batteries around with the mower and other tools.

The GreenWorks Pro mower does come in significantly cheaper than the Dewalt at an MSRP of $550. That includes the lawnmower plus a 4-ah battery and charger. This isn’t the best comparison because it only comes with one battery. However, you can purchase additional ones later. The mower also comes with a discharge chute, bag, and mulching kit, just like the Dewalt.

Battery Lines

One of the biggest considerations for these two mowers is their battery platforms. Dewalt is one of the most popular power tool brands with a wide range of tools. The 20V batteries used in the mower can also be used in all their 20V power tools and yard equipment. Plus, if you already have Dewalt power tools, you can use those batteries in the mower to save money on a bundle.

Likewise, the GreenWorks 80V battery is compatible with a number of different outdoor power tools, such as snowblowers, weedeaters, and chainsaws. However, they are incompatible with smaller power tools such as drills, impact drivers, and saws. Many people like to choose a brand they can purchase other tools in so the batteries are universal. Be sure to look at what each company has to offer before deciding.

DeWalt 20V Max Mower and GreenWorks 80V Mower: What’s new?

The DeWalt 20V Max Mower and the GreenWorks 80V Mower have received a few updates since February 2023, to include:

DeWalt 20V Max Mower:

  • Improved safety features: Safety is an important factor for mowers. Rear-wheel drive has been added, which helps make the mower safer and less likely to cause injuries.
  • Improved cutting performance: The mower is now more powerful and is better suited for mowing thick or overgrown grass.

Greenworks 80V Mower:

  • Redesigned deck: Airflow has improved with the newly redesigned deck, which has resulted in better grass collection and less clogging.
  • Dual battery system: Users now benefit from longer mowing times without having to swap out batteries thanks to the dual battery system.

DeWalt 20V Max Mower and GreenWorks 80V Mower: What’s next?

Some possible updates the DeWalt 20V Max Mower and the GreenWorks 80V Mower might receive in the next six to 18 months are:

  • 360-degree cutting: The ability to cut grass in all directions would eliminate the need to turn around and make it easier to mow around corners and obstacles.
  • Increased battery life: Lithium-ion batteries have the potential to be even stronger. We should see batteries with longer battery life.
  • Improved cutting performance: More efficient motors that cut grass more evenly can be expected as technology advances.

Dewalt 20V Max Mower vs GreenWorks 80V Mower: Which One Is Better?

We really like Dewalt for many of its power tools. However, this mower doesn’t match the brand’s known quality. On the other hand, GreenWorks isn’t known for having the best equipment, but this is a solid lawnmower at an affordable price. But for smaller yards, you may want to consider a robotic mower.

The problem with Dewalt is that it is underpowered, unlike GreenWorks. Not to mention, the combined power from two 20V batteries adds extra hassle for the consumer who must keep two batteries charged. If you want to have a spare for larger yards, you will need a total of four batteries.

GreenWorks only comes with one battery, but it does help keep the price of a bundle down. Both product lines have plenty of extra tools, but Dewalt wins with its massive 20V power tools. Overall, GreenWorks will be the better choice for most homeowners. However, the Dewat is a solid option for people already invested in the battery line.

Dewalt 20V Max Mower Vs GreenWorks 80V Mower: Which One Wins? FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Can you plug a battery operated mower into an outlet?

No, battery-operated electric mowers can only be powered by a battery pack and do not support plugging into a home outlet.

Do the Dewalt 20V mower batteries work with other Dewalt tools?

Yes, the Dewalt 20V mower batteries are exactly the same as the ones that go in their 20V power tools.

Do GreenWorks 80V batteries work in any hand tools?

No, the downside of the 80V battery is that they are very large and not practical to put in smaller hand tools like drills. However, you can still get outdoor equipment like blowers and weedeaters.

How big of a yard can you cut with an electric lawnmower?

Most of the advertising for the Dewalt and GreenWorks mowers says up to 1 acre, but that is pretty optimistic. An average-sized lot, or even a larger corner lot should be easily cut with an electric lawnmower. Just make sure the grass doesn’t get out of control or it will put a larger strain on the batteries.

Are electric lawnmowers silent?

Electric lawnmowers are very quiet compared to traditional gas ones. However, they will still make some noise which is usually a humming sound coming from the motor.
