December’s Nintendo eShop Charts Examined

As a gamer, it is always fun to look at the sales charts to see what others are being drawn toward. Not only is it great to find out what people enjoy, but it also helps to determine what to play next. December’s Nintendo eShop charts for Switch is just one of the many ways that you can see how well certain video games are selling.

However, what makes the eShop charts unique is that you can see the performance of digital-only titles. While many people do still love to purchase physical cartridges, the eShop is great for smaller developers who cannot afford the production costs. Not only did some of Nintendo’s most popular franchises make the December list, but there are also some great indie titles as well.

1. Pokemon Violet

Pokémon always tends to be one of the best-selling games, and the latest title is no exception. Pokémon Violet and Scarlet were released on November 18th, 2022, and quickly rose to the top of the eShop’s charts. Like other Pokémon games in the core series, Scarlet and Violet offer slightly different experiences of the same core game.

What sets the new games apart is their expansive open world that you get to explore, as well as the new Pokémon. In Pokémon Violet, you’ll be attending the Ulva Academy with professor Turo as your teacher. Violet’s legendary Pokémon is Miraidon, while Scarlet’s is Koraidon. Additionally, some of the exclusives include Bagon, Passimian, Gulpin, and Clauncher.

Pokémon Violet Standard – Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
$59.88
  • Choose Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly to join you on your journey through Paldea
  • Explore the land, sea, and air of this open world as you adventure through three different stories
  • Take classes at the Ulva Academy and learn about battling and Pokémon biology from your professors
  • The school's name, crest, uniforms, and other features differ between Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet
  • An Independent study called Treasure Hunt allows you to seek out new experiences and collect your own treasure
  • Encounter Pokémon that have the ability to Terastallize to gain special powers

2. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Mario Kart 8 video game
Both critics and fans consider Mario Kart 8 Deluxe one of the highlights of the popular series.

Mario Kart tends to be one of the most popular games for any Nintendo console. Unfortunately, Nintendo has not yet released a new Mario Kart game for the switch, but they did rerelease Mario Kart 8 from the Wii U. With that said, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is one of the best games in the series and still manages to stay original despite coming out back in 2014.

If You haven’t picked up a Mario Kart game before, it is essentially an arcade racer. The game lets you play as one of Nintendo’s many popular characters. Best of all, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has some of the best tracks. This includes both new and original ones, along with online multiplayer mode. However, what kept Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at the top of the eShop’s sales boards is its new DLC which adds all-new tracks to the game.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
$59.88
  • Features every track from the Wii U version, including all of the DLC content
  • Play as iconic Nintendo characters, plus returning favorites like Bowser Jr. and King Boo
  • Online multiplayer lets you compete with friends in both new and revised battle modes
  • Supports 4 players in 1080p in TV Mode
  • Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership are required for online multiplayer

3. Pokemon Scarlet

Just like Pokémon Violet, Pokémon Scarlet was released on November 18th, 2022. But by December 10th, it hadn’t quite made it up to the height of Violet. It’s interesting that two nearly identical games can have such a big sales gap, and it would be even more interesting to find out what makes people choose one over the other.

One of the differences in scarlet is that there’s a female professor, and you are attending the Naranja Academy. Additionally, there are different books and lore as well as exclusive Pokémon such as Tauros, Larvitar, Koraidon, and Oranguru. Of course, the best thing about the core Pokémon games is that you can always collect Pokémon from the other game by trading with someone who has it.

Pokémon Scarlet Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
$59.88
  • Choose Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly to join you on your journey through Paldea
  • Explore the land, sea, and air of this open world as you adventure through three different stories
  • Take classes at the Naranja Academy and learn about battling and Pokémon biology from your professors

4. FIFA 23 Legacy Edition

FIFA games tend to be pretty good with their realistic take on the game of soccer. Players, teams, and even stadiums are recreated to deliver a unique experience. Unfortunately, the Switch hasn’t been so lucky as its FIFA games tend to be lacking, as is the case with FIFA 23 Legacy Edition. The problem is that versions on the Switch are designed specifically for the console’s limited hardware and power.

This makes it seem far inferior to the fuller games found on the PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Additionally, the game has not received any new gameplay modes or enhancements since FIFA 2019. If you’ve already purchased another version of FIFA on the Switch, there really isn’t a reason to buy FIFA 23. However, soccer’s popularity is evident because FIFA 23 still managed to top the charts in December.

FIFA 23 Legacy Edition - Nintendo Switch
$47.50
  • Features some of the top international leagues
  • Includes the addition of top women’s teams
  • Play at some of the most famous stadiums in the world
  • Gameplay features and modes equal to FIFA 22 on Nintendo Switch
  • Updated visuals and broadcast overlay

5. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

Super Mario 3D World: Bowser’s Fury is another Wii U game that later got ported to the switch. It is oftentimes overlooked because it is not as impressive as other 3D Mario games, such as Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Galaxy. However, Super Mario 3D World has a lot to offer, and while it may not be the best game in the series, it is still a ton of fun to play.

The game is set up much like Super Mario 3D land on the Nintendo 3DS, as there is an overworld with levels to complete. These levels are three-dimensional, and Mario has plenty of freedom to move around. However, what makes this game even more worthwhile is Nintendo’s addition of Bowser’s Fury, which is an entirely new story that has its own charm.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
$59.88
  • Two new Mario adventures you can play independently or with friends
  • Added multiplayer options locally and online
  • Explore the feline world of Lake Lapcat and defeat a giant Bowser
  • Collecting Green Stars and power-ups as you make your way through dozens of vibrant courses
  • Play as a favorite Mario character, each with their own playstyle

6. Exorder

December's Nintendo eshop chart
Exorder is a turn-based strategy game set in the fantasy kingdom of Cerulean.

In a surprising twist, Exorder, a digital-only game, has made it to the top ten. While this isn’t unheard of, it is rare for smaller indie titles to take on the AAA games and Nintendo exclusives. Part of the reason for its quick ascent and immense success on the eShop is from a sale that ran for an extended period of time where the game only cost $1.99.

Additionally, the game’s publisher, No Gravity Games, runs an annual special around the holidays where you can get a free game each day for twelve days. The only catch is that you already have to own one of their titles, and Exorder was the cheapest. With all that said, Exorder is actually a great game, and the gameplay consists of a fantasy turn-based RPG.

7. Just Dance 2023 Edition

Just Dance is a series that manages to stay relevant even when other games have failed. Despite having a new release every year since 2009, it still adds new content yearly that attracts first-time buyers as well as longtime fans of the series. The original game came out exclusively on the Nintendo Wii and took advantage of the console’s motion controllers.

Since then, Just Dance has come out on nearly every home console, including the Switch. The 2023 version of the game packs in some of the latest hit songs as well as some throwbacks, plus you can purchase additional songs. Just Dance 2023 features songs by BTS, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga Ft. Beyoncé, Billie Eilish, the Cast from Encanto, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Linkin Park, and others. It works similarly to other rhythm games like Guitar Hero, where you have to match motions on the screen. There are also some minor graphics and gameplay improvements.

Just Dance 2023 Edition – Code in box, Nintendo Switch
$29.99
  • Dance to hits from BTS, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga Ft. Beyoncé, Billie Eilish, the Cast from Encanto, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Linkin Park, and more

8. Mario Party Superstars

Mario Party games have been around since the Nintendo 64 days, but they don’t seem as popular as they once were. Superstars attempts to fix that problem by bringing back some of the most popular boards and mini-games from the early titles. Unfortunately, the game didn’t turn out quite as good as the concept sounded, but it’s at least better than Super Mario Party.

On its face, Superstars is very similar to its predecessors, and its gameplay is exactly the same as every other Mario Party game. The game is set up like a board game where you play against friends or computerized players. Then there are the 100 mini-games that make up the bulk of the gameplay. If you enjoyed previous Mario Party games, then you will enjoy the modernized boards and mini-games.

Mario Party Superstars: Standard - Switch [Digital Code]
$52.67
  • Features 5 classic boards from Mario Party games for Nintendo 64
  • Play 100 minigames from the Mario Party series on Nintendo 64 and GameCube
  • Board game modes are saved after each turn, so you and your friends can pick up where you left off both locally and online
  • All game modes available for online play
  • Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership are required for online features

9. Nintendo Switch Sports

Nintendo Switch Sports is a long-awaited title that sought to bring back the fun of the original Wii sports game. Unfortunately, Nintendo Switch Sports does not live up to that legacy, but it’s still managed to make the eShop’s list of best-selling games. While the original Wii Sports game and even its successor on the Wii U use basic mechanics for simple sports, the Nintendo Switch version feels overly clunky.

Additionally, Switch Sports includes an odd list of games, such as golf, soccer, volleyball, badminton, swordplay, bowling, and tennis. While those are great sports, they notably left out baseball and boxing from the original game. Perhaps some of the disappointment was due to nostalgia, but it seems that Nintendo missed the mark, especially considering that golf wasn’t even available at release.

Nintendo Switch Sports Standard
$39.88
  • Features 7 sports: Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara
  • Soccer uses a Joy-Con with the Leg Strap (included in the physical version only) to kick the ball
  • Multiplayer modes include 1v1, 2v2, or a free-for-all, but additional accessories (sold separately) may be required
  • Multiplayer is available locally or online
  • Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership required for online features

10. Among Us

among us
The sci-fi multiplayer puzzle game, Among Us, began as a free mobile game.

Among us is a unique title to make the list primarily because it is a port of a mobile game that was actually free. It then made its way to the Switch back in 2020 and has found decent success. What makes Among Us unique is its gameplay, as it is set up as a multiplayer where you’re put with a team who needs to solve puzzles.

These puzzles are assembled as tasks and spread out throughout a map that each player gets to work on independently. It creates a unique social environment but also gives everyone an opportunity to play. Adding another layer of originality is the fact that there is at least one imposter in each round who will try to sabotage your work and kill the players on your team.

Among Us Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
$5.00
  • Supports from 4-10 players locally or online
  • Requires Nintendo Play account to download and install
  • Work as a team to solve puzzles and prepare your spaceship for launch
  • Beware of random players among the Crew who are Impostors

eShop Exclusives

In addition to the list above, which simply covers all of the games available on the Nintendo eShop, there is also a list of games that are exclusively available on the eShop. You may have noticed that many of the games listed above are available physically as well as digitally, and that is simply because there are more popular titles that are developed by AAA studios.

However, one good thing about online stores is that they allow smaller companies to offer their games on consoles. Oftentimes indie developers take these on as passion projects, and their hard work really shows. In addition, there are other games, such as Disney’s Dreamlight Valley and Stardew Valley, that are immensely popular but are only available digitally. Here is the list of the top ten eShop exclusives:

1. Exorder
2. Among Us
3. Stardew Valley
4. The Last Campfire
5. Disney Dreamlight Valley
6. Arcade Archives Vs. Super Mario Bros.
7. Cult of the Lamb
8. Contra Anniversary Collection

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Nintendo eShop?

The Nintendo eShop is an online store that lets you buy and download games for the Nintendo Switch console.

Can you get older games on the Nintendo eShop?

Yes, select older games from a number of consoles are available on the Nintendo eShop. Unfortunately, there aren’t many old Nintendo games, but you can find content from other developers.

Why are some games available only on the eShop?

Many Switch games are only on the eShop because it keeps developers from taking on the expensive costs of selling cartridges. This makes it a great option for smaller developers to release their games with less risk and expense.

Do you need the internet to play eShop games?

Some games do require the internet to play, while others may require it for certain game modes. But purchasing a game through the eShop does not mean you will always need an internet connection.

Are cartridges better than digital games?

The debate surrounding physical media has gone on for a while now. Cartridges are great because you can easily trade or sell the game. On the other hand, digital is good because you don’t have to carry cartridges around. Keep in mind that some games are not entirely stored on the cartridges so you will have to download content from the internet when you first play it.
