- CS:GO broke its own user record with 1,802,853 players online simultaneously, surpassing the previous record of 1,320,219 players.
- Dota 2 held the all-time high user record for seven years with 1,295,114 users online before CS:GO broke it.
- The new version of Counter-Strike, CS2, is currently in development and expected to be released in Summer 2023.
Counter-Strike is the most-played game on the Steam platform. CS:GO recently broke the user record with 1,320,219 logged-in users at the same time on February 11, 2023. However, it didn’t take long for CS:GO to break the new player record once again, only three months after the previous record.
What’s even more interesting is that CS:GO is an 11-year-old game, and it took more than ten years for it to reach the record of the highest number of players. And now that it has happened, CS:GO raises the bar even higher. We also believe that the numbers will continue to rise since the new version of Counter-Strike hasn’t been released yet.
So, read on to learn more about the player record on Steam, a game that held it before CS:GO, and the new Counter-Strike version!
What’s the New CS:GO All-Time User Record?
The new CS:GO all-time user record is 1,802,853 players online at the same time. This happened again on the weekend of May 6, 2023, and it is a huge jump over the previous player record held by CS:GO with 1,320,219 online players. That’s nearly half a million new players in the CS:GO community, in just three months.
We believe that it won’t be long before the Counter-Strike community sets a new record, especially considering that the new version of CS will be released very soon.
Previous All-Time High User Record on Steam
Before CS:GO took over the all-time high user record, it was held by a game called Dota 2. Dota 2 secured the record by having 1,295,114 users online at the same time. In fact, Dota 2 held the record for seven years before CS:GO broke it.
Dota 2 was a new game that extremely gained popularity, which is when it set the record. Therefore, it’s different for a CS:GO to set the record since it’s considered a fairly old game (11 years old).
Before CS:GO took over the record for the highest number of users ever, it was held by Dota 2. Dota 2 secured the record with 1,295,114 users online. In fact, Dota 2 held the record for seven years before CS:GO broke it.
When CS:GO broke Dota 2’s record, it was just barely (1,295,114 VS 1,320,219 players). But, this time, CS:GO broke the record with about half a million more players. Considering that this record hasn’t been broken for seven years and now an 11-year-old game has broken it twice, this sets CS:GO apart from other competitive games.
This shows the growth of the popular eSports game, which still has a lot more in store for its players. The last time we wrote an article about CS:GO breaking the user record, there were rumors about the new Counter-Strike version in the making.
Meanwhile, the rumor has been confirmed by the game developer. They released more exciting news, and you can find more on this below.
Counter-Strike Legacy and New CS2 Version
Counter-Strike is the franchise name for one of the most popular first-person shooter games on the desktop. It was developed in 1999, and since then, it has an active community of players who contribute to the game.
It’s a highly competitive game with simple rules. Two teams fight on a series of maps for two sites on each map. The round is won when the team is eliminated, the site is successfully destroyed, or the round time runs out.
Just two years after the release of the first Counter-Strike game, the game became competitive at the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) LAN. From that point, gaming organizations around the world formed teams that trained to compete on some of the largest LANs in the world.
As a result, the game quickly became the most popular eSports game. While other games came and went, Counter-Strike always persisted in different versions. After the first Counter-Strike version (best known as 1.6), other Counter-Strike versions followed, such as Condition Zero, Source, and Global Offensive.
The latest Counter-Strike version is Global Offensive, however, there will soon be a new version called CS2. This game will be an upgrade from CS:GO, which is already being developed with the help of professional Counter-Strike players.
So, the two-decade-long history of Counter-Strike continues, and the community of dedicated players is growing by the day. We believe that Counter-Strike will hold the record and continue to break it once again. In fact, that could happen immediately when the CS2 game is released.
Currently, there is no set date for the release. However, the game developers have mentioned Summer 2023 as an approximate release date.
Breaking the record with half a million more players is a big deal, especially considering that this record hasn’t been broken in seven years. Now that the new version of the game is in the making, there’s no doubt that Counter-Strike won’t only hold the record. It will also break it at least one more time, possibly this summer.
There is no other FPS competitive game with such records, let alone a multiplayer game that attracts so many online players at once. There’s no doubt that Counter-Strike is here to stay and make more history.
