The History of CMT
CMT, also known as Country Music Television, started in Hendersonville, Tennessee. The founder, Glenn D. Daniels, launched the network on March 5, 1983, with Faron Young’s 1971 hit, “It’s Four in the Morning.”
By 1994, CMT had become a major network on cable television, and the channel played music videos for almost 24 hours each day. In 1997, the channel was sold to CBS, which was acquired by Viacom in 2000. As of 2023, CMT is owned by MTV Entertainment Group.
Although CMT has decreased its airing of music programming, it’s still an incredibly popular channel. More than 180,000 people tune into the network each week. This may be because CMT offers viewers drama shows like Nashville and Yellowstone, and reality TV like Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team. Even with the shows, CMT still offers country music videos.
CMT Sister Stations
CMT has two sister stations — MTV and Comedy Central. Comedy Central is best known for its South Park show, but it has many other comedy programs and talk shows available. MTV is an extremely popular channel that airs music videos along with reality TV and comedy shows.
While CMT doesn’t offer 24-hour country music videos anymore, the channel does provide music, reality TV, and more. Here’s what you’ll find day-to-day.
CMT has released many original shows, including Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team, Nashville (starting with Season 5), and Still the King, just to name a few. Some of these shows have been canceled or are no longer airing new episodes, but you can still watch their reruns from time to time.
CMT has been able to acquire many popular shows from other networks, including The Golden Girls, The King of Queens, Reba, Yellowstone, and Roseanne. These shows and their reruns are often available to watch between 8 a.m. and 1 a.m. EST each day, so many viewers can catch their favorite episodes.
Of course, music videos are an incredibly important part of CMT, especially because that is what the channel aired exclusively when it first launched. However, they aren’t as popular as they used to be, so the channel keeps the schedule tight. If you love country music, you can listen to the latest and greatest videos between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. EST, Monday through Friday.
MTV began as the station to watch for the newest and most popular music. While the channel still showcases music from time to time, it mostly airs reality TV shows and documentaries like The Challenge: Untold History, Catfish: The TV Show, Becoming A Popstar, and Ridiculousness.
Comedy Central Programming
As one might expect, Comedy Central is known for its comedy programming. The channel has many original and syndicated shows available day to day. A few of these include South Park, Futurama, Beavis and Butt-Head, and The Office.
