The History of CBS
Formerly known as Columbia Broadcasting System, CBS started as a radio station in 1927. Talent Agent Arthur Judson launched the program because he couldn’t find work for his clients under the National Broadcasting Company (NBC).
However, after many financial losses, the network was purchased by William S. Paley, who started offering paid advertising to grow the station. From there, CBS skyrocketed in popularity and has since become one of the largest companies in the media.
Columbia Broadcasting System moved to TV in the 1950s and grew as one of the top channels for drama programming. The name was changed to CBS, Inc. in 1974, and the company was purchased by Viacom in 1999. The network has been owned by Paramount Global since December 4, 2019.
