While releases have dropped off in recent years, there are still dozens of titles to choose from if you’re a mixed martial arts fan. With that in mind, here are six games for MMA and UFC fans we feel are at the head of the pack. 

1. UFC Undisputed 3

Some of the best MMA games of all time come from the Undisputed series, and Undisputed 3 is the best UFC game of all time in the minds of many fans. While the franchise is currently dead in the water, you can get back into the action with the game on the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.

Undisputed 3 has all the features fans loved from the previous releases but with a slew of cool new additions. Pride mode was introduced along with damage that carries over to the next fight night. You can knock opponents out of a bout with leg TKOs now, and there are new submissions. THQ upped the ante with Undisputed 3, including brutal knockouts. 

While the new additions are great, the classic modes that drew fans to the game remain. Ultimate Fights lets you play through classic bouts from MMA history. Title mode is largely the same, while Career mode will keep you busy for months — not days. There are more than 150 fighters in the game, and as it’s an older title, you can play with fighters like Benson Henderson, Carlos Condit, Dan Hardy, and Forest Griffin.

UFC Undisputed 3 is just as fun today as it was back in 2012. Needless to say, it’s well worth your time if you have a console to play it on. The first two games in the franchise are also a blast, but THQ and Yuke’s final game in the series was their masterpiece. UFC Undisputed 3 still brings a premium price on the secondary market due to its popularity, and it is available in used condition for the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

2. EA Sports MMA

In 2010, EA shook things up with a new fighting game. Simply called EA Sports MMA, the game was a departure from the company’s previous sports titles and the first good MMA game outside of the Undisputed franchise. 

EA Sports MMA launched with plenty of fanfare, complete with a match between the game’s cover stars, Randy Couture and Fedor Emelianenko. Despite the game not having the “UFC” tag in the title, the roster is packed with memorable names. That includes Jacare Souza and his brutal leg kicks and fighters like Frank Trigg, Luke Rockhold, King Mo, and several Gracies. 

Another cool aspect of this game and other early UFC titles is the rules. You can adjust them to suit your needs or even allow elbows and knees to grounded opponents. Career mode lets you start at the bottom through two amateur leagues and work your way up through the ranks. Rivalry fights and training camps are fun, and there’s a ton of depth and replay value in the game, despite its age. 

EA Sports MMA marked the end of the Undisputed Era and the beginning of EA’s dominance with titles outside the major sports. While the quality has definitely waned in recent years, this classic is still worth your time if you have an Xbox 360 or PS3.

3. EA Sports UFC 3

Going with older MMA games is a great way to play with Hall of Famers, but the graphics and mechanics are definitely dated. The best new UFC and MMA game is another EA title — UFC 3 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Aside from the addition of Bruce Lee as a returning player bonus, UFC 3 was a mixed bag upon release. Several areas improved from the previous game, however, including the striking system. Action is much more intense this time around, and Career mode adds a considerable amount of depth. There are also modes like Submission Showdown and Knockout, so there’s truly something for everyone.

While the submission system isn’t as solid as stand-up or striking in UFC 3, it’s generally received better reviews than UFC 4. Because of the game’s age, it’s a better deal used or new than the most recent game in the franchise. There are dozens of current and classic fighters on the roster, along with an abundance of microtransactions for Ultimate Team Mode. 

UFC 3 isn’t the best mixed martial arts game from EA, but it’s the best UFC and MMA game for people with a PS4 or an Xbox One. UFC 4 is also an option, but it’s another game that will see a deep discount when UFC 5 arrives in the fall.

4. Pride FC Fighting Championships 

The UFC may have brought MMA to the mainstream, but Pride was around long before the UFC existed. Only a handful of titles represent the early days of mixed martial arts, and the best one is FC Fighting Championships for the classic PlayStation 2.

Pride is unique compared to other games on our list. Not just for the setting and fighters, but also for the gameplay. It will feel dated compared to the systems in UFC 3 or even Undisputed. The action is fast and very fluid, however. The K1 style and rule sets play a part in that, along with Anchor’s engine. It’s a game that’s easy to get the hang of but hard to master — especially on higher difficulties. 

As for the features, Grand Prix Mode is a fan favorite. It allows you to create a GP tournament to crown a King, while Survival mode tests your skills. The character creator is solid, although less robust than the ones found in modern games. There are more than 20 fighters to play with in Pride FC, including Big Nog, Akira Shoji, and Royce Gracie. 

THQ and Anchor put a lot of thought into Pride FC, and it shows in reviews from gamers and bloggers alike. While it definitely plays a bit differently from games on modern consoles, it’s well worth your time if you love K1.

5. UFC Tapout

Today, you can find fighting and sports games for multiple platforms with next-gen consoles. That wasn’t the case in the early days of MMA gaming. UFC Tapout is the best UFC and MMA game for the classic Xbox and one of the top options from the 6th console generation. 

UFC Tapout is a game from DreamFactory released in 2002 for the Xbox. The game features a variety of UFC stars in their early days, like Chuck Lidell, Tito, Shamrock, and Mark Coleman. There are a number of unlockables as you make your way through the game as well. They include two female combatants and well-known rapper and actor, Ice-T.

UFC Tapout has several modes of play to sink your teeth into like UFC and Arcade mode, where you can unlock additional fighters. While there’s no real career mode, the gameplay is solid and holds up well despite being 20 years old. It’s also one of the only titles where you can choose Sumo as a style for your created character. 

UFC Tapout was a short-lived franchise with only two games, but it’s a title many gamers remember fondly. The game was typically checked out at Blockbuster for ages upon release. While UFC Tapout 2 arrived a year later, the original has more fans than the follow-up.

6. EA Sports UFC 2

EA is no stranger to mobile ports, whether it’s Madden, FIFA, or the Sims. The best UFC and MMA game for mobile users is EA Sports UFC 2, the follow-up to the original which launched in 2015. The new game has improved visuals and depth along with the usual dose of in-app purchases. 

This tap-and-swipe-based UFC game puts players in the octagon against various opponents. It looks stunning on a high-end mobile device like the iPhone 14 Max Pro, and the action is fast-paced. Thanks to the control scheme, it’s a game anyone can pick up and play quickly, even if it involves a lot of QTE and swiping. 

EA Sports UFC 2 is deeper than the original, with multiple modes of play and daily events. There’s a campaign mode, a camp, a market, and even raids. Getting through the tutorials and into the game can take a while, but there’s a lot to do once you get past them. You can obtain most of the fighters through gameplay or via fighter packs in the store. 

This MMA game has a familiar system mobile gamers have become accustomed to with challenges, leveling, and IAPs. While it pales compared to any console UFC game, it’s the best way to get in the action on a mobile without emulation. You can check it out on Android or iOS.
