This game has everything we sought in a superhero game and more. It follows two of the most well-loved men in the Spiderverse, Miles Morales and Peter Parker, as they navigate the world of superheroism and spider-person living.
The web-swinging mechanic is one of the best parts of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. After all, what good would a modern Spider-Man game be if we didn’t utilize our advanced physics engines to create immersive web-swinging? While many people did, rightfully, criticize that the developers underutilized an otherwise excellent addition to the game, you’ll have tons of fun swinging around New York City on your web as you traverse the map. Fast travel? There’s no need to when you could swing your way through the streets.
Regarding story features, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has a deep and meaningful story, exploring the meaning of heroism and what it means to be a hero. You’ll explore the intersection of human life and superheroism and what superheroes give up to be superheroes. Overall, it’s a beautifully woven tale that spares nothing in telling both an exciting and realistic story. The game is available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. - The environment and the narrative are impacted by your choices
- Control multiple powers
- Detailed environments plus realistic weather and lighting
Sometimes the best games are older than you expect, like inFAMOUS Second Son, our choice for the Best RPG Superhero Game. This game came out in 2014, but unlike a lot of games released nowadays, it stands the test of time very well. It’s an open-world RPG following Delsin, who has the unique superpower Conduit. Delsin is a Native American graffiti artist who is pushed to Seattle after corrupt police action impacts the reservation he lives on.
The government has instituted a program to hunt and neutralize Conduits like Delsin. Delsin’s Conduit ability is called Power Absorption; he can absorb the powers of Conduits he comes in contact with. Throughout his journey, he meets other remaining Conduits as he works to defeat the corrupt government that has designated his existence an affront to its operation.
Second Son is the third game in the inFAMOUS series, directly following inFAMOUS and inFAMOUS 2. If you’re interested in the story, we highly recommend playing through the original inFAMOUS games, as they provide much-needed context for the story. All of the inFAMOUS games have incredible stories that are well worth the time to invest in them.
Second Son is an open-world RPG with an immersive universe to explore and interact with. You won’t be bored with this title. Check out inFAMOUS Second Son on Amazon.

Superhero games don’t have to be deep, story-rich RPGs, they can also be fighting games like Injustice 2, our choice for the Best Non-RPG Superhero Game. Injustice 2 is the second Injustice game and features superheroes and supervillains from all sorts of franchises pitted against each other in 1v1 combat. Each character is outfitted with unique abilities based on their comic book iterations that allow them to take down the opposition.
Injustice 2 features a rich combat design with a fun combo system that will have you feeling superhuman right out of the box. However, don’t mistake that for being an easy game. Many fights in Injustice 2, especially PvE ones, are extremely difficult. They rely on the player learning the more technical sides of the game. You won’t be able to get by with just button mashing, you’ll have to learn to block and execute combos correctly to get the most out of the game.
It’s also worth noting that Injustice is a DC property. If you like Marvel superheroes, you won’t find any in this game. Marvel superheroes are typically featured in Marvel vs. Capcom for those looking for a Marvel superhero fighting game. Unfortunately, due to the longstanding rivalry between Marvel and DC, there are no current plans for a fighting game featuring heroes from both properties, as cool as that would be. Check out Injustice 2 on Amazon.

|The later levels of PvE might be difficult for newer players.

Best Japanese Superhero Game: Persona 5 Royal
- Award-winning definitive edition of popular Persona RPG
- Filled with all the beloved characters, confidants, story elements, and locations you love
- Customize, explore, and unlock new characters and experiences
- Play as the ultimate Phantom Thief
Persona 5 Royal is our choice for the Best Japanese Superhero Game. While it is not a traditional superhero game, it is a bunch of teenagers dressing up in costumes and going out to fight evil in the world — while balancing their double identity with regular life — which is the definition of a superhero game. Persona 5 Royal is the definitive edition of the fifth mainline Persona game. Fans of the Persona series had been waiting for the fifth game for years and Atlus didn’t miss with this release!
The game falls into the Japanese RPG (JRPG) genre, which is a turn-based system. Other examples of popular JRPGs are earlier Final Fantasy games and Dragon Quest by Square Enix. JRPG superhero games are uncommon, as Western game development primarily focuses on action games. Japanese game developers in particular continue to release turn-based games like Persona 5 Royal to absolutely mind-boggling success both domestically and overseas.
Persona 5 Royal follows the usual format of Persona games which is slightly less difficult than Shin Megami Tensei games and slightly more difficult than other JRPGs. You’ll receive the aid of craftable summons known as Personas that allow you to alter the abilities of the main protagonist to suit your specific playstyle and give you advantages over enemies. The game also requires social interactions between bouts of fighting to make your characters stronger, something you’ll have to balance with time spent fighting. You won’t be able to coast by on just raw stats from beating up monsters! Check out Persona 5 Royal on Amazon.
|Turn-based combat is a rare format in superhero games.
|The game’s unusual time management system might be hard for new players to adapt to.
|The game balances combat and story elements with both being required for the player to succeed.
|The characters are unique and have deep stories that the player can unlock and experience.
Best DC Superhero Game: Batman: Arkham Knight

- Explore the entirety of Gotham City in a completely open-world setting

- Take down individual villains on the streets of Gotham or follow the core narrative
Batman: Arkham Knight is a complex tale of heroism following the DC superstar Batman, played by Kevin Conroy, and a slew of well-known allies such as Nightwing, Robin, and Oracle, and it’s our choice for the Best DC Superhero Game. If you’re more a fan of DC Comics over Marvel, you’ll never run out of Batman games. In part because he’s very popular, even among non-comic book nerds, and in part because the Batman games tend to be well-made.
This is the third game in the Arkham series and the final one, wrapping up the overarching story of the series. The game takes place following the events of Arkham City, where Arkham’s citizens feel safer and crime is on the downswing due to the death of the Joker in the previous game. However, this leads to unresolved feelings for Bruce as he struggles to find purpose without an archnemesis. It also leads to the potential union of the remaining supervillains in Arkham as they work to figure out whether they can kill Batman by working together.
The game is dark and edgy, just like the tale of Batman should be. It tackles the heavier sides of the Batman story and showcases supervillains who are truly evil. There are no kid gloves to make the story more palatable for general audiences. Check out Batman: Arkham Night on Amazon.
|The story is more mature and dark than other superhero games.
|The game is not for general audiences and definitely not for children.
|The gameplay is relatively easy to learn but has deeper technical skills that players can utilize.
|The cast features many beloved DC heroes and villains alike.
How to Choose the Best Superhero Game
You can base your choice in superhero games on two things: which superheroes you want in your game and the genre you want to play. If you’re a DC or Marvel absolutist, you’ll have a lot fewer games to choose from since around half of them won’t be to your liking. There are also superhero games like inFAMOUS that don’t have an affiliation with comic books at all. Additionally, if you’re into superheroes but haven’t checked out any Super Sentai games or shows, now might be the time to expand your horizons into the Japanese superhero market.
Regarding genre, you can find superheroes in almost every genre. Most Western superhero games are action games ranging from RPGs to fighting games and more. However, there are Western superhero games that don’t fall into the most common Western genres if you look hard enough. Asian superhero games range in genre from full-fledged RPGs to fun mobile games. Realistically, if you’re willing to expand your horizons beyond what you already know, you can find a superhero game for just about any genre.
