Why Add Music to Your Instagram Story?

What’s the point of music in an Instagram Story?

You might be wondering why a person would add music to an Instagram Story in the first place. After all, this isn’t Spotify or Apple Music — people don’t come to Instagram to hear music, right? Well, as it turns out, there’s a variety of interesting reasons to add a catchy tune to your Story. Let’s run through some of the most important reasons below.

Boost Engagement

Music can capture attention like nothing else. The right song at the right moment can encourage your Story’s viewers to pay attention and watch your post all the way to the end. Viewers are also more likely to share Stories with music, which will only boost your engagement further. This is especially true when the song’s a chart-topper.

Set a Tone

If you want to create a certain tone or atmosphere for your Instagram Story, then why not try using music for your desired effect? Music adds a whole new layer of emotion to your Story, which can help make it more impactful for your audience. A well-chosen soundtrack can elevate the Story to great new heights.

Express Yourself

Maybe you don’t care about engagement or tone. Maybe you just want to share a part of your personality with your followers through your Story. What better way than through music? Music allows you to be creative and express yourself at the same time. From popular songs to niche deep cuts, your Story’s song reflects a new part of you to your audience.

How to Add Music to Your Instagram Story

Follow along with the steps and photos included below to learn how to add music to your Instagram Story. Before we begin, we should make one thing clear: some business accounts may not be able to use this feature due to licensing agreements. It’s usually only reserved for personal accounts, as music use for business purposes is a little bit of a gray area. After all, not every artist wants their song to be used in what is essentially a commercial for your brand. With that said, let’s get into the process.

Step One: Create New Story

Tap the blue Plus (+) to create an Instagram Story.

First, start a new Instagram Story. You can either tap the Plus (+) button below your profile picture on the home page or tap the button on the top right of your profile tab.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add music to my Instagram Story?

To add music to your Story, open the Instagram app, start a new Story, and tap the Sticker button (it looks like a square with a smiley face). From there, select the Music button, search for a song, and add it to your Story. You can then customize the appearance of the song on your Story using the tools provided.

Can I use any song I want in my Instagram Story?

You can use many popular songs for your Instagram Stories, but not all songs are available due to licensing restrictions. Instagram’s music library offers a broad selection of tracks to choose from, but some artists and record labels may not have licensed their music for use on the platform.

What if I can't find a specific song I want for my Instagram Story?

If you can’t find a specific song in the Instagram music library, the app will typically suggest alternatives or let you know if the song isn’t available for use in your story. You can then select a different track. You can also try getting creative and recording a video with the song playing in the background.

Is there a limit to the length of the song I can add to my Instagram Story?

Instagram typically limits song clips to 15 seconds for each Story slide. To post longer clips from the song, you will need to add more slides to your Story.

Can I add music to a live video on Instagram?

Unfortunately, you cannot add music directly to a live video on Instagram. However, you can play music in the background using a separate device or app. Just be careful, as larger accounts may encounter copyright issues when broadcasting other people’s songs without the artist’s permission.
