The first time you realize it’s possible to add music to your Instagram Story might have come as a shock. What kind of technical wizardry is this? As it turns out, it’s a lot easier to do this for your own Instagram Stories than you might have assumed. We’ll show you how to insert songs into your Stories in a matter of minutes. Soon, you’ll be doing it like a verified pro.
Why Add Music to Your Instagram Story?
You might be wondering why a person would add music to an Instagram Story in the first place. After all, this isn’t Spotify or Apple Music — people don’t come to Instagram to hear music, right? Well, as it turns out, there’s a variety of interesting reasons to add a catchy tune to your Story. Let’s run through some of the most important reasons below.
Music can capture attention like nothing else. The right song at the right moment can encourage your Story’s viewers to pay attention and watch your post all the way to the end. Viewers are also more likely to share Stories with music, which will only boost your engagement further. This is especially true when the song’s a chart-topper.
Set a Tone
If you want to create a certain tone or atmosphere for your Instagram Story, then why not try using music for your desired effect? Music adds a whole new layer of emotion to your Story, which can help make it more impactful for your audience. A well-chosen soundtrack can elevate the Story to great new heights.
Maybe you don’t care about engagement or tone. Maybe you just want to share a part of your personality with your followers through your Story. What better way than through music? Music allows you to be creative and express yourself at the same time. From popular songs to niche deep cuts, your Story’s song reflects a new part of you to your audience.
How to Add Music to Your Instagram Story
Follow along with the steps and photos included below to learn how to add music to your Instagram Story. Before we begin, we should make one thing clear: some business accounts may not be able to use this feature due to licensing agreements. It’s usually only reserved for personal accounts, as music use for business purposes is a little bit of a gray area. After all, not every artist wants their song to be used in what is essentially a commercial for your brand. With that said, let’s get into the process.
Step One: Create New Story
First, start a new Instagram Story. You can either tap the Plus (+) button below your profile picture on the home page or tap the button on the top right of your profile tab.
Step Two: Tap Sticker Button
Next, look for the Sticker button at the top of the Story interface. It looks like a smiley face on a peeling sticker. Tap it once you’ve found it.
Step Three: Select Music
Tapping the Sticker button unveils a menu of widgets and other tools to customize your Instagram Story. Scroll down (or search) until you find the Music button. Tap it once to reveal a new menu.
Step Four: Choose Song
After selecting the Music button, you’ll see a new pop-up menu with songs to choose from. You can search for a specific song by name, or browse by popularity or genre. Tap the song you want to feature in your Story.
Step Five: Edit Snippet
Simply tapping the song to add music to your Instagram Story is not enough. Now, you have to edit the font of the lyrics on the screen, choose the length of the song snippet, and adjust the section of the song you wish to feature. Customize your options as you see fit using the tools presented.
Step Six: Hit Done
After you’ve customized the song and lyrics as you want them, hit the Done button. It’s in the top right corner of the screen. Don’t worry; this won’t post the Story yet. That’s in the next step.
Step Seven: Post Story
Finally, finish editing your Story. Add additional widgets and adjust any photos or text you placed on the screen. Once everything is to your liking, hit the white Arrow button in the bottom right corner of the screen. This will post your Story for all your followers to see. You can also choose Close Friends to keep it limited to a select number of individual users you’ve curated. That’s all there is to it!
