The 5 Best Alternatives to a Logitech G29

Logitech G29 vs. G920

The 5 Best Alternatives to a Logitech G29

The Logitech G29 Gaming Racing Wheel is a great racing wheel, but it’s not perfect. For instance, the price may be a little high for your budget. In contrast, you may not need a sim racing wheel because you play a lot of arcade racers. Additionally, the G29 is not the best wheel for sim racing. A premium wheel that has a servo motor or swappable wheels may be a better option.

No matter your reason for choosing the G29, there are plenty of other alternatives. Below we will take a quick look at some of the competition to see who stacks up the best and what the competition has to offer. More importantly, you get to see what consoles these wheels work with, which is important if you want to play with an Xbox console. Take a look at these top-rated products:

To start off our list, we have the Logitech G920, which is nearly identical to the G29. However, the G29 only works with PlayStation consoles. Therefore Logitech made another variation specifically for Xbox users, which we highly recommend if you need an Xbox racing wheel. Right off the bat, you may notice the pedals are exactly the same.

But the differences become apparent when looking at the steering wheel. While still retaining the same plastic mold and basic steering dimensions, the face of the wheel is dramatically different. In place of the recognizable PlayStation controller buttons are Xbox controller buttons. The style and colors are also slightly different, and the wheel is noticeably missing the LED lights above the center cap.

If you aren’t already familiar with the Logitech G29 and G920 wheels, they are an excellent choice if you are just getting started with console racing. But these wheels also work with PCs. The current retail price is about $299, but they occasionally go on sale. These are the reasons we recommended the G29 for PlayStation users, and the G920 is an excellent alternative if you have an Xbox console.

Thrustmaster is another major manufacturer of racing wheels, but unlike Logitech, they primarily focus on the racing accessory market. The Thrustmaster T248 Racing Wheel is the company’s equivalent of the Logitech G29, supporting the PS4, PS5, and PC; however, it doesn’t work with the PS3. It packs in many of the same features at a similar price point, but it also has a few notable differences.

The T248 actually has the same MSRP as the G29, but like its competitors, you can regularly find the Thrustmaster marked down. It, too, has three pedals which are all well-designed. A noticeable difference is the steering wheel which does have paddle shifters and controller buttons. The wheel also has a unique design and layout.

T248 is pretty sleek despite looking cluttered with buttons. There is even a digital display which some games use for speed or RPMs. You can also purchase a stick shifter, and although it is of better quality, it costs significantly more than the Logitech one. T248 and the G29 have similar features, like force feedback, but your pick ultimately comes down to personal preference.

A relatively new model, the Logitech G923 Racing Wheel and Pedals is a slightly upgraded version of the G29 and G920 wheels. Although you may think the G923 is an upgrade of the G920 and, therefore, only supported by Xbox consoles, it is actually a bit stranger. The G923 comes in two versions, one for PlayStation and another for Xbox consoles.

Oddly enough, Logitech decided to use the same name for each version which does create some confusion. The MSRP on the G923 is $349, making it a little more expensive than the G29. At first glance, the wheel and pedals look nearly identical to the G29, the one distinction being the buttons are all black, and the PlayStation button is missing from the center cap.

While the G923 shares many similarities to the G29, it does have some important distinctions. One difference that many don’t notice is that the brake pedal did receive a much-needed upgrade. But the biggest difference is the new Trueforce technology in the wheel. It essentially adds another dimension of realism by simulating the engine’s rumble and smaller track variations on supported games.

Next up, we have the Thrustmaster T300 RS GT Edition. Apparently, two different wheels bear the 300RS badge. But our focus is on the GT edition, which comes highly recommended by PlayStation for its new Gran Turismo 7 title. The wheel also features many similarities to the already discussed T248 with some improvements.

What differentiates the standard T300RS is that it has only two pedals and a slightly different layout. Meanwhile, the GT edition has an extra clutch pedal and minor wheel improvements, like a Gran Turismo badge on the center cap. Another distinguishing factor is that the T300RS is only advertised to support PC, PS3, and PS4, whereas the GT edition also advertises compatibility with the PS5.

The wheel still uses a belt system for force feedback, but it’s noticeably smoother, and turning is tighter. What really sets this set apart from all the ones we’ve covered so far is that it has a removable steering wheel. This means you can swap it out with other compatible Thrustmaster wheels for an even more realistic driving experience. However, its $449 MSRP is higher than the G29 and the standard T300RS.

Finally, we’ve made it to a major shift in racing wheel technology. The Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro Express Version is recommended by Sony for its Gran Turismo games. Not only does it come highly recommended by Sony, but it is also capable of taking on some of the most detailed driving conditions. Unlike Logitech and Thrustmaster wheels we’ve already discussed, Fanatec wheels are designed for the most competitive racers. Please Note: As of July 16, 2023, the Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro Express Version is currently unavailable on Amazon. If you cannot find the product elsewhere, please check back later.

The Fanatec DD Pro uses a servo-wheel motor that provides direct power to the steering wheel for force feedback. This is a major departure from most wheels, which typically use belt-drive technology. The DD Pro is noticeably stronger and more compact thanks to the metal casing surrounding its motor.

Similar to the T300RS GT edition, the DD pro has a removable wheel that you can swap with other compatible Fanatec wheels. The Gran Turismo bundle includes a special Gran Turismo wheel and pedals for $700. Unfortunately, the pedals that come with this bundle do not include a clutch, but you can upgrade the bundle.

DD Pro works with various accessories. For instance, you can pair it with handbrakes and special shifters. But console gamers with both Xbox and PlayStation consoles can rejoice knowing that this bundle works with both consoles as well as PC. However, you do have to purchase separate steering wheels designed for each console.

The 5 Best Alternatives to a Logitech G29 FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Is it worth upgrading to a servo wheel?

It is worth upgrading to a servo wheel if you like racing, but want a stronger motor that provides a more realistic driving experience. But you should really start with a cheaper wheel like the G29 to see if you will stick to the hobby.

Why doesn't the G29 work on Xbox consoles?

Logitech wheels are designed to work with either Xbox or PlayStation consoles and they do not support cross-compatibility. Part of the reason is the different controller layouts, and the other is licensing issues with the console manufacturers.

Is the Logitech G29 good for sim racing?

Yes, the Logitech G29 is a good starter wheel for sim racing, but there are better options if you want the best experience.

What kind of steering wheels can you get for the Fanatec DD Pro?

Fanatec makes a number of different wheel options, including ones for the Xbox and PlayStation consoles. However, they also have realistic ones that match different vehicles such as Porsches.

Does the Logitech G29 have a compatible handbrake?

No, unlike Thrustmaster and Fanatec, there is no handbrake for Logitech racing wheels.
