13-Inch Laptop Chassis Dimensions
Knowing the chassis dimensions of a 13-inch laptop can help you figure out whether the unit fits in your laptop bag or in a backpack pocket. While these dimensions vary widely from manufacturer to manufacturer, you’ll find that most 13-inch laptops measure just under 12 inches in length, around eight to nine inches in width, and under 0.7 inches in height.
Some models can measure over 12 inches in length, though, so this is something to keep in mind when shopping for a bag. Most laptop bags designed for 13-inch models measure around 12 to 12.5 inches in length, so a larger model would be a snug fit.
To find the right bag size, measure the laptop beforehand and compare its chassis dimensions to the dimensions of the bag.
13-Inch Laptop Display Dimensions
While a 13-inch laptop chassis doesn’t have a standard dimension, things are slightly different as far as the display size is concerned.
Measured diagonally, the display size of a 13-inch laptop usually measures 13.3 inches. There are very few exceptions, including displays that measure exactly 13 inches diagonally. Other variations include 13.1, 13.4, and 13.5 inches, but all these sizes are rare.
Most laptop manufacturers disclose the actual display size in the unit’s specs, so you can easily figure out how small or large your display is. However, if you can’t find the display size anywhere, you can measure it yourself.
All you have to do is stretch a measuring tape from the top left corner of the display to the bottom right corner (or vice versa — you can even use a ruler if you want). Regardless of the actual screen size, one thing that can change is the aspect ratio.
Various 13-Inch Laptop Aspect Ratios
The aspect ratio refers to the ratio of a display’s width to a display’s height in this order. The aspect ratio can impact the resolution of the screen and how much of an image you can see at once. Depending on brand and model, 13-inch laptops can have four different aspect ratios.
16:9 Aspect Ratio vs. 13-Inch Laptop Dimensions
The most common aspect ratio found in 13-inch laptops is 16:9. This is a standard aspect ratio used for displays of all sizes and is one of your best options if you use apps or play games that are optimized for this aspect ratio.
The main advantage of 16:9 displays is their high refresh rate — a feature that is hard to find in displays with other proportions, even if there are some notable exceptions. The main downside is that the screen looks cramped compared to other options, and a cramped screen doesn’t pair well with tiny laptops.
As far as the laptop’s external dimensions are concerned, most 13-inch laptops with a 16:9 aspect ratio measure around 12 x 8.5 x 0.65 inches.
3:2 Aspect Ratio vs. 13-Inch Laptop Dimensions
The 3:2 aspect ratio is much boxier than the standard 16:9. It looks almost square, but it does fit more of the image on the screen. Since this is the preferred aspect ratio for photo editing and video rendering, content creators might prefer a 13-inch laptop with these display proportions.
Options are scarce, though. Currently, the only laptops using this aspect ratio are the Microsoft Surface and some Huawei MateBook models.
Most Microsoft Surface laptops have a display size of 13.5 inches, and they are slightly bulkier than the vast majority of 13-inch laptops. While they maintain the same average length of 12 inches, they are usually 9 inches wide and up to 2 inches thick.
The Huawei MateBook models typically have 13-inch displays and more compact external dimensions. They measure around 11.26 x 8.31 x 0.59 inches.
4:3 Aspect Ratio vs. 13-Inch Laptop Dimensions
The 4:3 aspect ratio isn’t used in 13-inch laptops anymore, but some old models might have these display proportions. Like the 3:2 aspect ratio, the 4:3 ratio is typically used for recording images or motion pictures, and a laptop with these proportions allows you to see the entire image without cropping it or losing information.
Laptops with this aspect ratio are generally more compact in size, measuring around 11 inches in length, 8 inches in width, and around 0.5 inches in height.
16:10 Aspect Ratio vs. 13-Inch Laptop Dimensions
An aspect ratio often found in 13-inch Apple laptops, the 16:10 screens fit more information vertically and are ideal for writers, editors, and programmers, allowing you to see more of a page or more code lines at once.
Dell and Lenovo also use this aspect ratio in many of their 13-inch laptops, including the Dell Latitude and Lenovo ThinkBook.
Despite the different aspect ratios, the 16:10 laptops have the same display diagonals and external dimensions as the 16:9 models. This aspect increases versatility, allowing you to choose the best aspect ratio for you without worrying about the actual size of the device.
Is a 13-Inch Laptop Right for You?
13-inch laptops are incredibly compact and portable. They are ideal for students and folks who like to work on the go. Despite their compact dimension, many laptops this size deliver the same performance you’d expect from a larger model. The main downside is the rather tiny display and the minimalist keyboard. If you have vision problems or need a full keyboard with a numeric keypad, you should consider a larger model.
Most 13-inch laptops actually have a display size of 13.3 inches and measure around 12 x 8.5 x 0.6 inches. Aspect ratios can vary from the standard 16:9 to 4:3, albeit the latter is not used anymore and is only found in older models. Regardless of what you need, we hope this guide can help you figure out whether a 13-inch laptop is right for you.
